  • Round2 has reissued MPC's 1980 release of the 4-4-0 locomotive "General." Hopefully you're as excited about this kit as I am, so come along and take a look inside the box, learn some of the kit's pros and cons, and find out a wee bit of the history behind this important subject in American history.

Built it when it was first released. A friend of mine came to the museum and was allowed
to take photos to aid on the final detailing. I still have it. I built a display case and it looks like it was put together yesterday. I also purchased all of the 1/25 figures that Magnuson made for it and they add a lot to the overall display. Great kit.

My father built in 1980.I had it on display in my store in the 1980s.I built this loco a couple of years ago and painted it in the Lionel General color scheme of the 1959 train set.

Great video Dan, I ended up with a 1980 1/25 after a fellow from Ohio saw my full scale wood model and thought I should have this in my old car museum in Harlem, Ga., stop in sometime.

Just out of interest, why are you using those chassis, when you should be able to get a working mortised chassis off of lets say Ebay, even if that means converting 1 from an RTR loco, and then you could run the General around your layout if you have got a layout to run her on ? :)

Any idea if this kit is still available, and if so, how much would it cost?

I imagine it is at several places, but I'm almost certain there are still examples available where I worked when I made this video - the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, GA. Their number is 770.427.2117. When I last checked the kit was around $80.00; when you call, ask for Michelle to get a quote on shipping.

Its called a Rooster Comb, and it's part decorative, part functional. Decorative, because frills and ornamentation were all the rage in the Victorian era, and functional as it breaks up and diverts the smoke away from the cab (and thus away from the faces and lungs of the engineer and fireman).

If you choose to de-chrome the parts, I dip the parts in laundry bleach and that removes it, then rinse under warm water.

You can also use household ammonia. That is what I will do because you can paint brass that looks better.
