Concorde! For those interested, there are articles on the web that describe how in 1985, British Airways offered Concorde to be used in NATO intercept trials using F-15 Eagles, F-16 Fighting Falcons, Grumman F-14 Tomcats, Dassault Mirages, and F-104 Starfighters to converge on Concorde on a stern intercept course. Only the English Electric Lightning was able to successfully do so, specifically Lightning XR749, which was described as "a hot ship, even for a Lightning."
@powrplaya3266Concorde can sustain Mach 2 in a super cruise for hours. The F15 has the speed but can’t sustain it for long enough, plus depending on the weapon load that’ll affect its speed.
Yes this is why even as an American with all our wonderful military aircraft I rank the EE electric as one of the most underrated overlooked fighters of all time I'd personally rank the EE lightning almost next to the tomcat..almost
While stationed with the F-117 before it was public a Horse head was painted on the commanders red truck after he hit a wild horse one night. He didn't take the painting well.
The P-3 has a weapons bay, it can hunt and attack subsurface and surface vessels. It can carry depth charges, torpedoes, mines or combinations of those weapons.
The mad is basically a big metal detector. Subs would have to be fairly shallow for it to be effective...don't remember the exact depth, but around no more than 100' depth or so. On exercises the AW operator would scream out "MAD,MAD,MAD!!!" when he got a spike...and depending on what we were doing I would drop a smoke marker. She was indeed loud, I live on the southern outskirts of London, every Saturday afternoon around 1pm, before she was grounded and then retired, the BA flight from Heathrow to Charles De Gaulle would pass over our house (at about 12-15k feet), you heard her coming way before you saw her, and long after she had passed.
When I was younger and worked at Pearson Intl Airport (Toronto, Canada) I would see the Concorde come in. Actually drove up beside it once... it wasn't as big as you would think! Very sleek and cool looking. Watching it take off was another thing as well - took a long time to get off the runway, dragging its butt slowly while climbing with engines glowing, lots of smoke and noise! I am glad I was alive back then to see that - it was impressive and many of us that worked at the airport stopped what we were doing to watch it take off... every time!
Love the scenario. Imagine sweatting balls as an aviation buff, watching those 2 Flankers pull up on your flight . Then out of nowhere, one of them explodes as the other bails while dumping flares. A stream of fire lances its wing seconds later, sending it tumbling into oblivion. "What in the hell just happened?" Then you see it. "Oh, F22"
I got to see the Concorde once, went to Port Columbus JUST to see it, could not BELIEVE how loud that aircraft was!!!! Dude pulled a U-ie and RIPPED it back over the airport and off he went, SOOOO bada$$ 🤘🤘🤘
That secondary explosion on the ship looked to be a boiler explosion given it's location midship. Fragmentation penetration in a 600psi plant would released steam instantly, and no fire from it. Everyone was boiled alive near it. Wow, ruined their day.
Seeing the P-3 in this mission brought back some great memories. I grew up in Mountain View, California and Moffett Field had a large fleet of P-3 Orions stationed there during the early years of my childhood.
