  • Martins are a joy to have on a farm. They are aerial acrobats, make lots of noise, and eat lots of large flying insects... e.g. HORSE FLIES! Of course they eat some mosquitoes too. Watch to see how I attempt to attract even more to the farm.

    the Troyer gourds leak alot of water inside the nest from the tunnel/push pin. I use lexel caulk around the tunnel and push pin, they are the best gourd I have ever used.
    what you have there is vertical, horizontal is 14 inch. deeper. the entrance is the Conley 2. always put the top push pin in first. you did a great job excellent video.

    When I saw the word "Martin" in the title, I wondered what in the heck did you need a gourd pole for an acoustic guitar? Stay safe, Jerry!

    How about putting a camera inside or perhaps on the pole so you could film the martins (I'm sure you don't have enough to do Jerry! ) 😃👍👏

    This is great, Jerry, thanks. Very enjoyable to watch. We rarely see Purple Martins here in the UK, only occasionally in the northernmost parts of Scotland. 😊

    Cool. Maybe take off the winch handle, weld on a socket and use a battery drill to raise and lower. 🤘🤘

    I truly like your all inclusive format. You'd be a Johnny One Note if all you did was luthier repairs. I love the wild birds, even noisy starlings.

      @@that_thing_I_do starlings are non-native invasive bird, that kill our songbirds over nesting cavities. they're not protected by law also house sparrows are not either. both were brought over from Europe, starlys 1890, House sparrow 1850.

    Until today I had never heard of a Martin House, or a gourd house, what is the purpose of the gourd shape? And is there a particular reason for wanting birds to nest in your property?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  2 роки тому

      Martins eat lots of bugs. Especially large flying insects, e.g. horse flies, mosquitoes. They like the gourd shape. Some say that goes all the way back to the native Americans using gourds to house martins. I kind of doubt that part.

  • @zapa1pnt
    @zapa1pnt 2 роки тому +2

    Jerry, did you put something on the ends of the rods to keep the gourds from sliding off. Is it even necessary?
    Also, if you put a "V" cut in the top of the riser tube and a peg on the post, it will keep the riser and the houses from twisting back and forth, in the wind. It's too late for this one, since the pole is already up.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  2 роки тому +1

      The houses are bolted on the the houses cannot twist because the cable is stiff enough that it pulls it directly under the pulley

    Can you add details on the pole the used? You mentioned it was about 20 feet long. What gauge is it and the diameter? Looking to do the same thing here in Texas.
