As a black woman who grew up in NY and will forever be traumatized by the man who came on the train when I was 7 years old and held it up and threatened everyone I approve the actions of this man. It was people like him who saved us that day when I looked at my mother and asked her if we were going to die. Also I find it convenient his family now knows how to use the court system to sue but couldn’t be bothered to get POA or guardianship for their grown son and have him committed for his own protection and society as a whole. I said what I said, go argue with who you slept with.

But your 7 year old experience differs from this. He had no weapons. He was more so venting about being hungry & homeless. I don’t think can approve someone murdering another human being. That sounds absolutely sick. We are not God & even if you don’t believe even that statement makes you sound like the bad guy. It’s cringe.

@@RomanAnthony dude you weren’t there. Every situation is different. So far the witness stand of the people in the subway said they felt threatened and they were glad he intervened. Also base on your experience you can’t never be the juror in this case. You made an assumption base on your experience and the only people who can make that statement are the people on that train. The jurors were convinced base on the testimony that the people inside the subway felt threaten.

Helping a family member who has mental health issues can be difficult and in some cases, impossible. Full adults have the same rights we all have and can only be held for mental health issues temporarily. Further, the side effects of the medications can be difficult and there are a pitiful number of places, therapists and effective strategies to help those who need it.
More attention needs to be put on the man who put him in a chokehold. Too much is too much and he needs to be held accountable.

A New York City police spokesperson told Newsweek that Neely's record has 42 prior arrests, dating between 2013 and 2021. They include four for alleged assault, while others involved accusations of transit fraud and criminal trespass. At the time of his death, Neely had one active warrant for an alleged assault in connection with a 2021 incident. This the guy they defend...Neely, 30, was yelling and pacing back and forth on an F train in Manhattan on Monday afternoon when he was restrained by at least three people, according to police and witnesses. Video of the incident posted online by a freelance journalist showed a U.S. Marine veteran lying beneath Neely and holding him in a headlock position for several minutes as Neely unsuccessfully tried to break free. Another passenger pinned Neely's arms, while a third held down his shoulder.

It's not like he set out to kill the guy on purpose. A few short years ago a woman was sexually attacked by a man on the subway, and noone helped her. They videoed the attack. There was out rage that noone helped her. Penny is a hero for stepping up to help. He didn't mean ill intent by killing the man, and the jury knew this.
If he celebrated not going to prison, good for him. He risked his life for others.
The father of the homeless man is only looking for a huge cash pay out. He's responsible for not helping his son and throwing his mentally ill son on society. He should not get a cent because we all know a lawsuit is imminent. It's disgusting!

"In May 2023, Neely, a schizophrenic high on K2, was railing violently at passengers in a crowded subway car. Witnesses say they feared for their lives. Neely’s 42 previous arrests included his 2021 subway assault on a 67-year-old stranger, breaking her nose and fracturing her orbital bone. At the time of his death following Penny’s restraint, Neely had an arrest warrant arising from that case."

I understand restraining someone that is yelling and making people feel uncomfortable/unsafe. However, holding him in a chokehold for over six minutes and causing someone to lose their life is excessive and wrong in my opinion. We can't end someone's existence because they are yelling and making people feel uncomfortable. There are some people out there that do not care about Neely because of his skin, socio-economic status, and/or criminal record, but think about what this could mean in the future. What if this happens to someone you would care about while they were having some kind of episode? Say it was a friend or relative of yours with mental health issues or just had a pretty bad day and started yelling. Now, say someone who has no idea who your friend or loved one is comes up from behind them and chokes them for minutes and minutes while two other people hold your friend or loved one preventing them from even defending themselves. Three men had him restrained, and the guy hadn't hurt anyone there. No need to end him.

of course, you want to be compassionate to everyone especially those who are vulnerable.
BUT realistically - no one is gonna be engage or interact with someone who is clearly mentally ill because you don't know what that person will do to you or anyone else nearby or even to themselves. You do not want to be involved with someone who is clearly not in control.
