the roll is essentially one stroke with extra notes to embelish it, and if you apply this thinking to the split fingering you will get a nice type of 'rougher' roll. However, the double stroke is a different way of thinking than we are used to on the darbuka because it is adapted from the tabla which is alot more suited for this technique (horizontal vs vertical surface). start slowly and build up the speed, keep thinking of it as 2 seperate strokes that need to be at the same (high) intensity and keep the intervals consistent (by for example counting the beats or working with a metronome).
