I'm giving mine up too. Thanks for this video! Great idea about a CL ad. I think I'll try that too! I started my booth one year ago. I loved styling it, and it was fun to pick for it, but the bottom line was it just wasn't profitable. My best month I'd net $200, and that was OK when my rent was $130(prepaid 6 mos), but my rent is now $165(month to month). I was happy for the experience, but unless your mall is super busy and you have large furniture big ticket item sales each month, its just not profitable. I'll continue selling on Etsy maybe try Mercari too. IG @glasshunter11
I hàd àn antique booth once in my life and it was a long time ago but it didn't leave a good taste in my mouth I remember losing things like some quilts and some small items things that got stolen I just didn't do that well especially in this one place that had one attendant for a football field sized store so anyone could come in there and just take what they wanted it seemed

Having an antique booth is a labor of love and the long timers know that you don't make that much money at it but love the thrill of the find, interacting with the other vendors, customers, etc. I also sell on ebay and etsy and find the anonymity of selling on these platforms cannot compare with displaying my items in a booth, watching others enjoy shopping in the mall, etc. I think you have to decide what you need out of reselling and decide what the best platform is for you. Having a booth in a mall is not for everyone

This was very helpful in validating my decision. Never made much money, but was fun. Now, due to physical difficulties and age, I am reluctantly having to close my booth after 8 years. Trying to figure out how to physically get it out and disposed of. Will try a 'fire sale' for a month. Hopefully other vendors will be interested. The rest will probably go into storage until I can figure it out.No garage sales permitted per HOA. Would love a follow up on how you disposed of your 'stuff'.

I completely understand, I have a beauty shop at my house and sell on eBay and Poshmark. Sometimes I want to scream when one bleeds over into the other.... it is draining on me. You did the right thing but at least you were daring enough to give it your best shot! Bravo! Think of all the experience you have now! I am proud of you!

I think you really have to love most, if not all aspects of maintaining an antique booth. My husband and I love the labor and time it takes to maintain the booth. We both have a love for hard work and creating something. It also makes it more fun if you have someone to spend the experience with. This is something my husband and I share, and that makes it more special to us.

For me, I did love the creative aspects of my booth- it was simply a matter of being able to trade time & effort for some sort of profit- my high rent really put a dent in that equation- and I wasn’t willing to work for free- so cool that you & your husband can share this experience!😊

You made the right decision! My mother and I stuck it out for over 3 years renting booths, and we tried 4 different stores. The first store closed suddenly after 6 months. We moved all our stuff down the street and even with really low rent we couldn't sell enough to make our rent back. We moved to another town with more traffic. The third store closed temporarily for covid but still wanted us to pay rent with no sales happening. Finally in the fourth store we started to actually make money, but a new owner took over and is booting dealers out. The constant shake ups in store ownership, drama behind the scenes and so on are just too much. It is too competitive and hard to make any real profit. Even if you profit a little on a monthly basis you have so much money sunk into your inventory you never really get ahead, and that's not even counting how much time and effort it takes to move the stuff around all the time. I have a lot of health issues and my body just can't take it anymore. Worst of all there can be issues with other dealers, especially when they work at the counter and may not always be honest. I wish we had never gotten into this business and would warn anyone to stay out. It is a money pit for everyone except the store owner.
There’s no doubt that the landlords of these malls do well. The time element is often overlooked by many. At least you tried (many times) and you are sure it’s not for you, so you learned something and have the experience under your belt.

So spot on! I have had a booth in an antique mall for over 8 years and although I love the creative outlet I am contemplating closing it. All the tips you mentioned are my probems with this journey. I, too, sell on ebay, amazon and etsy and the customers are just not there in the antique malls. Everyone is online. Lots of work and not much profit.
Absolutely! Although a fun creative endeavor, the time vs profit just didn't work. The key is traffic in addition to rent cost. Best of luck to you, Diane!

I have 2 booths and I am going to make a decision about them next year.
This mirrors our experience of having a booth for a few years. The only people who make money above minimum wage per hour are the folks that rent out the booths. If you add up your time, gas, admin. time, supplies, and more, you would make more picking up cans and bottles on the side of the road.

Sounds like a well thought out plan Barbara. Since you're in a beach town like me, the sales and traffic really go down during the summer months, and when the snowbirds return things are hopping again (October-April). Have you considered staying open a few more months to see if your traffic increases with the increased population? Perhaps VA Beach is not as "snowbirdy" as Vero Beach, FL is, I don't know. You mentioned a Poshmark site, but I don't see the link for it. Also, Fred and Alfie had "no comment" today...LOL! Hugs and best wishes for your continued success on your other platforms.
I did give consideration to giving it a few more months. After thinking long and hard, I decided to cut my losses because of the big picture of effort and time. I'm a "one man show" and there is only so much time in the day to devote to businesses and my personal day to day life. I'm happy I tried it though. If my booth rent were 50% less, that MAY have swayed me, but considering the other factors in deciding to close the booth -- that may not even have convinced me to stay. (UNLESS I could sell mostly small items) Yes, my boys Alfie and Fred RARELY have no comment. LOL!! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️

Awwwwwwwww, you decorated your booth beautifully, I remember watching that video when you were setting up! Im so sorry u had to close it, but all your reasons are very legit for a small business, alot of Economics involved here

I just opened my Antique Display in July , it’s only a glass locked built-in case and I pay $175 , it’s outrageously expensive, but it’s Long Island and no other antique malls around .

I’m going to put some more “man” stuff like military etc , we’ll see how that goes. I’m going by what one of the employees said what he sees people buying and what they are asking them for . 😊

EARTH ANGEL ♥️. I do understand your reasons for closing your booth! I live in Mass and had a booth in Maine for over 35 years!🙀 I was fortunate; only left because the business closed. Actually it started out as a hobby. My prices were the lowest in there ...150 antiques dealers & they all bought from me & resold there! Lots of time involved, as I had to travel 55 miles twice a week to restock! I sold antiques only, including glass, pottery, early primitives,antique silver & gold jewelry. If I wasn’t able to commit my time to just this booth, I wouldn’t have been able to do it!🤔🤷🏻♀️ l didn’t make a lot of money 💰, but That wasn’t my aim.Quick turnover kept people coming back! Don’t wait as long as you said to start dispersing, do it now!🥰🎃👍🦹🏻♀️🌚. BLESSINGS....♥️

I have rented a few spaces over the years, mainly for my handmade jewelry. I never made much, in some cases lost money every month paying for the space with zero sales. This has made me very leery of renting a space for my reselling because I don't want to add a monthly expense without already having a regular income from the reselling (from eBay or Etsy). I do love shopping at antique malls though! It's always fun to spend some time perusing what others are selling and find a few treasures along the way. ♥ ~Caroline

17 yrs as a retail Manager..i also learned never buy too much inventory until you see profits first...you buy as your selling...or else you get stuck with it..i think you should look for other antique booth places with lower rent. don't give up to the idea yet..nothing works well the first few months especially anything retail..lol.....you have large pieces in your garage to liquidate..those at flea markets/garage sales will not bring more $$ than a booth..as for the other online business .. you have to give it time ..which I do late at night....commitment is the target!! with perseverance it brings good results....it's not easy, but I do it because I need the extra income.

I had a booth for a while approx 10 years ago. Mostly kitchen collectibles. Making more than the space rent required almost giving stuff away. One booth owner that had kitchen collectibles would take my mint condition items and swap with her chipped items. I don't recommend it unless you are in hi traffic area and by the front desk and door.

@@pickychick777 not sure what part of the country your in. Have you ever gone picking at the Burlington Kentucky flea market just south of Cincinnati? I'm in southern Indiana and heard about it on an episode of Market Warriors on PBS. They called it one of the best flea markets in the country. It's about a 4 hour drive for me so I finally decided to check it out couple years ago. It lived up to the hype. It's the 3rd Sunday of the month April thru October. I highly recommend it.

I considered a booth in an "antique mall" but decided against it because I'm 70 and cannot move MYSELF, much less antiques, as easily as I used to. As others have suggested, I think Facebook Marketplace is the easiest solution to clearing things out. You can also visit flea markets (not just your local "mall" re-sellers), find someone who sells things like yours & offer to sell the stuff to them at a bulk price IF they can get it out of your garage by a specific date. A garage sale requires a lot of prep, marketing and help on the days of the sale to be successful. If you have an HOA, there may be restrictions. You might be better off, if you want to unload the excess quickly, calling Good Will, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the Kidney Foundation (or other organizations). In my area, they will send trucks & crews to clear out anything you want to donate..... and they provide a receipt for the items which allows you to deduct the amount from your taxes. In the long run, you may be better off doing that... but check with your business accountant to confirm that will work in your favor. While I did enjoy merchandising and displaying, the Return on Investment didn't work for me, especially with it taking time away from my main source of income (my online businesses). Yes, I made the same mistake opening a booth, not once but omg....shaking my head in anguish.....TWICE. I closed my first one about a year ago then a week ago I lost my mind and opened another. I guess I am a glutton for punishment.
Hi Chad -- You never know, you may just have the time of your life this second time around! I actually enjoyed my booth a lot. However, I just had too many irons in the fire and plus the booth rent did not make it worth the time I was putting in. Best of luck to you!!
My husband is an Antique dealer for 41 years and I for 21 years. I understand how you feel. I'm surprised that you didn't get help from your sister in law to carry heavy loads. It's called team work and that's what my husband and I do. The busiest time for us to make profits is between September through January 1st. After that, the business is very, very slow and don't make too much money. That's the way it is.
I noticed that your garage is full. It happens to us, what we do is to sell furniture on Market place or yard sales ( twice a year) and small items on ebay or Esty. And also put it on yard sales to eliminate the clutter.
If we didn't sell well in the antique booth, we reduce the size of the booth and pay less cost for the rent.

P.S. Ask any antique dealers and owners about how they feel about making profits. We are not alone about this. Also, look around the antique shop and see what and why most antique dealers are making the most profits. I believe that has to do with decorating by repainting the old furnitures and making it antique looks.
Hello Debbi- My sister in law only shared the booth with me for the first 3 months (of 7). Once she moved out, I had more space in the booth for larger items, hence more "schlepping". I will definitely explore FB Marketplace, and if November weather permits, I may try holding a yard sale. I also did do some furniture painting, etc. Just don't have the time to dedicate to the booth AND to run my online businesses with Ebay and other platforms. Let me get this straight. You spend 8 hours a day, which you could list and sell 20 items on-line. 30 customers in store or 300 million customers on-line? Only people that make money in antique mall is your landlord. This might have worked 20 years ago, but like almost all retail space is a dinosaur. Booths are just a social space for lonely folks. I'm sure it's a good lesson learned. I'm a power seller on eBay and people always ask how much is something is worth, I tell them 300 million people with tell you exactly what something is REALLY WORTH. Cut down on the clutter and donate stuff that is not worth your time listing. Hint......... Don't ever buy big stuff you won't or can't ship. Good lesson learned. Good video

Decided to rent a space at the local mall 3 years ago after retiring from my real job. It is pretty much a post retirement hobby designed for fun. I work there 3 days a month which pays for my space. My booth is not extremely large so I deal in smaller items. No heavy lifting.. Also I have mancave stuff for the guys that come along with their wives LoL. Because it is not necessary income there's no pressure to have a big sale month. I enjoy working with the other vendors and our manager,in her 80's is a gem! I do pretty well some months except for the covid shutdown last year. My $$ proceeds are my fun money or beach money as I call it. Sorry your's didn't work out.

Ebay -- The biggest Culprit, has shown that people are by and large lazy, and if they can
sit in their underwear and buy all they want.. Why go on the hunt? It has devastated
every genre of collecting, I remember when in the 1920's Tiffany Lamps were used for
target practice, and no one cared about that "Crap" It is the same time now.

I'm sorry you've decided to close your booth, but if you could've held off through December, you might have been able to unload most of the stuff stored at your home. People are always shopping more during the holidays.
You're right about the selling season continuing, but I wanted to cut my losses now and not wait any longer. It was becoming a monkey on my back. I feel a weight has been lifted just having made this decision. Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Oh n, I fell into this trap so many times of trying to hold out just a little longer to sell off more stuff. It never works.
I live in a small town with several antique booth malls. I have not done a booth because of price and I notice that the owners do not really care if they are open or if they bother people that come in and make them feel like shop lifters etc. The owners are getting their profits from the renters.
That rent was just too high -- needed to sell larger high end pieces to turn a decent profit. Too bad the antique malls in your area are also high in rent. Thanks so much for watching!!❤️

I understand all your reasons for closing your booth. Those large items in your garage have a yard sale so won't have to move them. Let people come to you. Take pictures of those large items and display them in your booth. Great video and Great content.

I used to sell on Etsy, but decided to simplify and now only sell on Ebay and Poshmark (mostly eBay)

It's really weird how people put items that are 10 years old into an antique booth I just never understood that when I had shops back in the '70s '80s so let's say I mean things have to be old decrepit 100 years at least before we put them in our stores otherwise go to Walmart
