Excellent advice talking about the difference between a sold item and what people are asking for! Being a person who sells stuff online I learned pretty quick that there is quite a difference.
the local game store by me does 30% cash or 55% the value for trade in value, abd they go off eBay prices. so I have done well bringing in a bunch of $2-$10 games in, and trading for higher value rarer games. like earthworm Jim recently for sega cd!!
It's true about not trading with someone who seems attached. I was going to buy an GameBoy SP with games and the guy was showing me that it worked, then was totally getting into it. Even though it was a super-cheap price I said, "hold onto that, don't ever sell it, you're having a lot of fun playing it." He nodded while staring at the screen as I said goodbye. Also good point about the "sold at" price versus "listed at" price. Honest & Fair was the best tip.

Yes. Your rep even with store owners can mean a lot. The only thing to add is that price charting does have loose, CIB and Sealed prices for most games. It's pretty decent in seeing what retailers would expect to sell a good condition game at. Usually around $5 difference.

I collect much besides games and trading is key. Also creating connections in the hobby can greatly increase the quality of any collection. Fellow collectors people in the business game developers are a great source. Sentimental value is fairly common in most hobbies involving collecting. As is the hoarder wonder how long before hoarding becomes a thing in gaming lol
I have go to tell you watching you guys has truly inspired me to start collecting. I am hating myself for getting rid of my gaming systems and games. As the new systems came out my old system was out the door. I recently broke my back at work and am now getting ready to have my 5th surgery and have been off work for over a year so money is very tight at my house. My wife would kill me if I decided I was going to take on a new hobby and start spending money on things that I don't NEED lol. So I have tons things laying around that I no longer use that may have value to someone else. For example I just traded a Samsung galaxy s1 for an original xbox, 2 playstation 2s and a modded playstation 1 and they also through in more games than I count. Later this evening I traded my old 5mp camera that I have not used in like 6 years for a Nintendo 64 with 4 controllers and a stack of games. This has become like a treasure hunt for me. I am hoping to find someone with a dusty sega genesis and 32x.that they are willing to trade. So guys please keep these pick up and trade videos coming. I wish I could post a picture of all the new games and systems that I have gotten by trading things I have just laying around. If you don't mind I will continue to update this thread as my trades happed, Thanks again guys keep up the good work
I want to up date.... since posting this I thought I would reach out to my friends on facebook I told them how I broke my back and had no money but was willing to trade things I had laying around. I told them I was just looking for their garage sale left overs and I was just looking for anything related to video games that had little to no value. I wish there were a way for me to put my screen shots from facebook because after I posted that I was looking. So as of the time of me typing this I have been given all the following for 100% FREE!!! I have been given an original NES, a Sega Genesis with 9 game and 2 controllers, 25 ps2 game,6 xbox 360 games, A ps3 and 14 games and 2 controllers, and a ps4 with 4 games and 2 controllers, and an amazon firestick jailbroke with the kodi program, I am not joking I wish could post pictures,
Thank you Metal Jesus and Mr Hancock. I find this is all common sense which all comes back to and revolves around respect. If you respect the buyer or seller, yourself and the game or gaming peripheral etc. It should serve you well. I also think with people mentioning his "buy it now" had ruined ebay there are still ways to get some bargains but they mainly involve looking for bundles, collections and using the right keywords. Sometimes people mislabel games and you can find Auctions that way. Also through the menu type system instead of just keywords. I think Metal Jesus would have said all this in another video I vaguely remember. Maybe Hello can mention that here if the legend himself read this here. Thank's again for another great video. You are really providing a great service to games, collectors out there with your collection of videos. Great job.
I got a new NES classic edition for 60 dollars on Craigslist,,even more cool,, the guy knew it was worth way more and just wanted it to go to someone who would play with it.there really are good people out there..keep up the great videos!
I have a pretty good thing going with my local retro gaming store. I usually buy games in bulk off of eBay craigslist and let go etc. so whenever I get games I'm not too fond of or just a double ill usually take it over to my store. I normally get good trade in value or equal trade in for 100% value of the game. They know me to be trustworthy I'm always upfront and honest with everything I trade in and I spent a decent amount of money there as well. I'm a repeat customer.
Nice video! Really appreciate the 'if someone is attached to a game don't trade it from them' advice from Mr. Immortal... Good things will come to good people :)
You can use Price Charting in more detail. It gives you direct links to completed auctions and separates by condition (loose, complete, sealed). It's easier than going to eBay and configuring search options in my opinion.
Price charting is nice for a lot of info at a glance, but ebay is better and not much harder. You just go to advanced search, type what you are looking for and hit "sold" listings (and completed but not sold if you want to see what price they don't sell at). It's literally 2 extra clicks and price charting tends to miss some listings for whatever reason. Always ebay if you want to nail down an accurate current price when buying or selling imo. That said, PC isn't as bad as John made it out.
Ok, you guys covered a lot of interesting variables, but there is one more thing you didn't mention and i think it's worth to speak about: what if the actual game is not English? I mean the CD cover, the manual and even the game text's too. Does it change the price of a PC Game or do you even consider to buy it if you find one of these types on the internet? Of course i don't talk about old console games because of the region restrictions, but here in my area there are lots of German copies. (just to come up with one exact example) - Maybe we could count Japanese RPGs in this group.
i dont trade games or collect or anything, but i enjoy this vids. feels like im hangin out and shooting the shit with yall. keep em coming MJ. great advice John.
i think if you a famous UA-cam video game collector it's easier 1 most UA-camrs stay with there own 2 people know you as for someone like me not so easy went on Craigslist seen green n64 for $75 been up there 2 months told the guy i trade you a slim ps1 original xbox with the big duke and dreamcast with games controller's. memory cards the guy said no i can get all that for $25 that he owns a video game store i hang up on him .
My two best trades: Trade 1: About five Playstation Magazine demo discs. For Parasite Eve. I made sure they realized they were only demo discs too. We were kids at the time and the other kid was like: "Yeah, but I don't really like this game" So yeah, I was fine for that. Trade 2: Best one. I had borrowed Doom 64 from a friend. (Letting them borrow my Goldeneye 007) Well, they never gave me my game back and I didn't really want to keep Doom 64. Well I knew this guy at a local swap meet that sold and traded videogames. He had a system where if you had a newer/current system game. He'd trade you just about any game for an older system. So I traded my copy of Doom 64... for Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. NEVER regretted that one.
I’ve traded televisions, and other items for video games on the Facebook market place. Honestly, the Facebook market place has some AWESOME stuff sometimes. #MetalJesusRocks #JohnHancock
obviously i am into vinyl..especialy rare independent records. and sometimtes trades are the only chance to get other rare stuff, if it never turns up. or just to safe a lotta money, as sometime you make good deals for a spare copy and can get another valued item with it. i love trading :)
If you have another hobby that you collect stuff try trading in those communities. You'd be surprised how many people have old nintendo games in their attic that they don't care about. I used to collect old DE razors and all kinds of wet shaving stuff. I was in a ton of groups on FB and when i got into retro games i posted a lot of stuff and had a ton of people contact me with old games they had in their garage/attic/parents house.
You guys need to check Price charting again. I just recently started using that site. They now break it down to loose complete and new. It also has a feature where you can track all that have sold not just listed prices. With my games I will look at the loose price vs the complete price. Then I factor in condition of my game. And on most I average between the two prices. Point is price charting is not as bad as you guys make it seem.
I use "My Game Collection" on android. I downloaded half a dozen apps and tried them all for a bit before I decided which to use. Just search your app store for cataloging apps. There are tons of them, but I focused on ones dedicated to just game collecting. "My Game Collection" just happened to be the one that appealed to me, but it's hard to make a recommendation because everyone has different types of collections and different things they want out of a cataloging app.
Price charting is flawed, but not terrible. The data does come from sold ebay listings, and you can click on the sales that pricecharting used to make that average and you'll get to see the game conditions. The overall price is an average, but you can still see the high and low prices the game sold for. The flaws are that sometimes an incomplete game will show up in the wrong category, and not all sales are included if an offer is made to and accepted by the seller.
I have a friend who is more into trading and selling games than he really is for collecting...He uses Pricecharting for all of his prices but of course wants to get the best deal for him so he can flip it. Gets really annoying.... But he also has a lot of the really rare and hard to find games for sale *shrug*. Great video!
Yes always trade with people you know. So they can trust you and they will come to you for deals. I hook up several 3ds and WiiU 1st party games for a buyer. Title like Majora Mask 3ds, Mario Party, Star Fox Zero, Pokemon Moon and many other. Sold them for what I got which is $10 each. At the end he return a favor by selling a hard to find Switch console for less than retail. Works out for both of us.
Trading is something I'm new to, but I like the general idea of it, though my collection as I have cultivated it thus far consists almost entirely of things I want to keep so I'm not yet in a position where trading is something I can see myself getting into at this point.
I would also suggest that if manuals, inserts, stuff like that, that came with the game are important to you, like it is for me, you should ask about that too. Seems obvious I guess.
I was wanting to know where i can go for trades i got a bunch of games for systems i dont collect for and extras on rare and expensive titles. none of my friends are really into game collecting unless its for new gen like ps4 so it makes it hard to trade with them. is there someplace online where i can trade with people?
Biggest trade I ever made was I traded the U.S version of Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition for a complete Crusader of Centy and Flintstones Dinosaur Peak
The problem about ordering from e-bay while living in central Europe is that in the better case they charge +/- 25 dollars for shipping, or they simply don´t ship to your country at all...at least in that Amazon is slightly better...
At least here in Austria trades are certainly not the way to go. We've got a handy site called "willhaben", which i would translate to "mewants" as it is broken in german aswell. It's a free site where mostly private people are selling stuff and of course there are also games and if you want a good deal you go there and never to a store and trading is really obscure. And unlike eBay, it has no fees and only optional services to highlight your post, etc.
Pricecharting actually shows quite a bit of detail. Has prices for complete in box, loose and new/sealed in box. Additionally it also shows the individual sales, dates and locations of the items sold, from multiple sources. Of course there's no absolute/definitive value for collectables, but I'd have to begrudgingly disagree with John's assessment of the site. It's usually reasonably accurate for any time frame, and I say that on the back of checking regularly, regardless of where I purchase from. Granted at roughly 1,000 items I have a humble collection, but it's enough to have learned to usually trust it (although having said that I'll always check multiple sources when trying to gauge a rough value). As for my best trade, Amiga Populous 2, plus about 100 "blank" (ok, ok, I admit, pirated) disks for the super rare Amiga versions of Wipeout 2097 and Shogo. The person traded with no longer had the hardware to run those 2 games (requires a 3d card and ppc cpu upgrade), so I guess I understand from his perspective.
I collect to play, I recently made a trade at SuperBitcon where I traded a SNES copy of Blackthorne which was a game I didn't care about for a complete mint copy of Rambo 3 on the Sega Genesis...I have fun childhood memories of Rambo 3 and the value was about equal, but personally I would of happily paid out of pocket for it. Blackthorne would of sit there collecting dust.
Got the European special edition original Xbox (crystal clear) with 4 controller (black duke, 1 crystal and two green ones) and around 16ish games of which 4 were rare german release only sports game that go for around 50 bucks each in mediocre condition as it belongs into PAL collections which many seem to be after. I paid 55€ or 65ish USD.
Very informative and interesting video, and John Hancock's knowledge and expertise is amazing. I wish he was buying games for me! I kind of prefer doing a face-to-face trade or purchase of games from a seller. I generally find that what a lot of people would consider "in very good" condition on Ebay and Amazon, is "barely acceptable" to my persnickety personality. I know I shouldn't really sweat the small stuff, but since I am paying premium prices for games, I expect nothing but the best. What works for me is to build a good relationship with people from different parts of the country, that share similar interests and passions that I do. They tend to go hunting for games I wouldnt', and they tend to keep an eye out for things that would interest me. And I would do the same for them. Besides the cost of postage and packaging, I get a lot of good trades!
A few weeks back at a convention I had a guy wanting my Megaman X3 for the PS1. He was all over it. Only thing he had I needed for my collection was a big box Mario Party 6, so I stacked some wanted commons to re-trade again, like 2 copies Ocarina of time and Megaman 3. Offcourse, since he wanted the X3 so badly, I pushed it beyond want I thought I would get. The lesson; no matter how badly you want something, both in trade and when buying; keep your emotions down, because the price will go up!
Street value and ebay value are not the same. Actual profit for the seller is significantly below the selling price shown under completed listings. There are seller fees, paypal fees and shipping costs. More people need to realize this. Additionally, there is the issue of liability and risk for the seller. Ebay is pro buyer and the seller is accountable when something goes wrong unless it is totally obvious that the buyer is at fault.

I have been given an original NES, a Sega Genesis with 9 game and 2 controllers, 25 ps2 game,6 xbox 360 games, A ps3 and 14 games and 2 controllers, and a ps4 with 4 games and 2 controllers, and an amazon firestick jailbroke with the kodi program, I am not joking I wish could post pictures,
You f'n rock metaljesus! Great channel!
Great job.
can be great advice for trading comics, figures.. anything! great video!
Great video! Very informative!
i think if you a famous UA-cam video game collector it's easier 1 most UA-camrs stay with there own 2 people know you as for someone like me not so easy went on Craigslist seen green n64 for $75 been up there 2 months told the guy i trade you a slim ps1 original xbox with the big duke and dreamcast with games controller's. memory cards the guy said no i can get all that for $25 that he owns a video game store i hang up on him .
This was a really great video. I enjoyed it!😃
My two best trades:
Trade 1: About five Playstation Magazine demo discs.
Awesome Metroid Shirt!!
I’ve traded televisions, and other items for video games on the Facebook market place. Honestly, the Facebook market place has some AWESOME stuff sometimes. #MetalJesusRocks #JohnHancock
A game is only worth how much some one is willing to pay for it.
Yes it's called market value and works on any commodity
obviously i am into vinyl..especialy rare independent records. and sometimtes trades are the only chance to get other rare stuff, if it never turns up. or just to safe a lotta money, as sometime you make good deals for a spare copy and can get another valued item with it. i love trading :)
You should do a video on specific game series, especially final fantasy
John always reminds me of Al from Home Improvement.
would you trade a dmg system for a few bootleg nes carts? dmg's are uncommon in my country
alva chairyal what's a dmg system?
DaRealKing303 the first gameboy
Two awesome people. Love you guys, keep up the good work
Cool stuff guys! Thanks for this!
Can you recommend an inventory software that works on android and/or pc for keeping track of your collection.
medwardl try Gameye it's free and works awesome. Keeps track of what you own as well as pricing.
I use vgcollect.com/ personally.
medwardl I've been using regeneration, it's pretty good
I use "My Game Collection" on android. I downloaded half a dozen apps and tried them all for a bit before I decided which to use. Just search your app store for cataloging apps. There are tons of them, but I focused on ones dedicated to just game collecting. "My Game Collection" just happened to be the one that appealed to me, but it's hard to make a recommendation because everyone has different types of collections and different things they want out of a cataloging app.
john hancock is so right on these views he shared here. dude is legit and id trade with him knowing hes gonna be honest with me
Nice video MJR and John :D Very helpful stuff.
Terrific video, and a lot of the tips apply to things that are not video game related.
OMG!!! I just noticed NOCTURNE on the bottom shelf next to The Immortal JH. That's one game my brother and I have a history with.
there arent alot of switch games out right now.. is it bad i bought just dance for the purpose of building my collection?
trade skills work better in small shops right?
Actually pricecharting has separate sections for loose, CIB, and sealed. It's not using CIB when averaging a price for a loose cart.
OHHH DAMN.. i want that Metroid shirt!!!!!
MJR back with another great vid...
I have a friend who is more into trading and selling games than he really is for collecting...He uses Pricecharting for all of his prices but of course wants to get the best deal for him so he can flip it. Gets really annoying....
But he also has a lot of the really rare and hard to find games for sale *shrug*. Great video!
Please do a snes buying guide with immortal john hand clock!! I'm begging you
Thumbs up for Heatwave! I used to love racing as the Don Johnson Special.
John seems like such a genuine guy
Trading is something I'm new to, but I like the general idea of it, though my collection as I have cultivated it thus far consists almost entirely of things I want to keep so I'm not yet in a position where trading is something I can see myself getting into at this point.
Great advise , thanks again for putting up great videos and usable content !!!
Great video, thanks guys!
John has 11,000 games and 25 complete collections. I have about 30 games and 2 very incomplete collections.
At my used game store you get back 10% of value and if you are extremely lucky and have something in low stock and in demand you will get 20%
A few weeks back at a convention I had a guy wanting my Megaman X3 for the PS1.
