Gonna offer some extra tips! One for John; when you check eBay sold listings, remember that sometimes eBay does promotions for 5/10% or $10-$20 off so the sold listings can sometimes be a bit skewed at the time of these promos. Secondly, I think you mentioned it in another video and i've used it many many times now. Use common quick selling games as trade fodder to get rare games. Any time I see Mario Karts or Super Mario or Donkey Kong.. the games retro game stores sell out of on a regular basis.. i snap them up quickly. Then take them in and they know they can move it fast, so they will often trade some of their rarer more expensive games that they have had sitting around for a long time for them.
I get a little annoyed when I see a game and ask how they came to their price point and they say, "That's what people are charging on ebay. " It would be fine if it was what people are BUYING it for but more often than not ihis isn't the case. They just see an inflated Buy It Now price and go with that. At that point I'm like if you're going to charge me ebay prices then I'm better off just buying it on ebay. Also I'd have a better chance on getting my money back if something goes wrong.
The more stupid thing with that typical answer "oh that's what it's going for on ebay", is that it's basically him saying "hey, go buy it off of ebay cause im not giving you a better deal". If it's the same price on ebay, why should I buy it from you then? It's so stupid.
No one in this comment secrion is against ebay sellers. We're talking about people saying "oh this is what it's going on ebay, so this is what I'll sell it for on CRAIGSLIST".
Boss Rush Mode eh, then just tell them to select "sold" in the search for what games are actually selling for. they'd have to be a real idiot to not understand the difference.
the local game store by me does 30% cash or 55% the value for trade in value, abd they go off eBay prices. so I have done well bringing in a bunch of $2-$10 games in, and trading for higher value rarer games. like earthworm Jim recently for sega cd!!
Pricecharting is terrible for pricing not to mention I personally wouldn't trust it just for the fact that it's run by one of the largest video game sellers on eBay, seems a bit unethical. People always say it's good for a quick reference but it takes no time at all to check sold listings on eBay.
My best trade: I got a GameCube with a couple of games for a GBA SP with a Pokémon game. My worst trade: I sold a SNES with 10+ games for around $20, just to buy a PS1 Memory card...
Excellent advice talking about the difference between a sold item and what people are asking for! Being a person who sells stuff online I learned pretty quick that there is quite a difference.
I suggest pricecharting for prices although check the sold section to get an idea it goes for or you can go ebay SOLD section but i wouldn't pay retail unless it's a disc or cart in good shape always check carts have a nintendo tool set on you when buying at garage sales or yard sales But with trades they're more right, unless you know the basic values
owning and playing games is heck fun but i dont see how one can be comfortable having thousands of games at once. To me I would never be able to decide what to play and that would be frustrating.
morris89swe I have around 400 games and I agree it can be hard to pick at times.. but I usually play something randomly and end up having fun with whatever I pick. Shelf collectors have a harder time I'm sure
morris89swe I have around 400 games and I agree it can be hard to pick at times.. but I usually play something randomly and end up having fun with whatever I pick. Shelf collectors have a harder time I'm sure
But the thing is if you start playing a game and the next day you play something else and keep going like that for a while you got like ten games you are not finishing because you keep going over to other games. That is the frustration in my part. I still have a few games from years ago I have never finished because of that and I have even forgotten owning a title or two. But buying new released games is usually no problem though.
morris89swe I tend to complete new games I get but the ones I've had forever I keep backlogged it can be very frustrating if someone is a completionist but I don't mind to have a few games going at once

It's true about not trading with someone who seems attached. I was going to buy an GameBoy SP with games and the guy was showing me that it worked, then was totally getting into it. Even though it was a super-cheap price I said, "hold onto that, don't ever sell it, you're having a lot of fun playing it." He nodded while staring at the screen as I said goodbye. Also good point about the "sold at" price versus "listed at" price. Honest & Fair was the best tip.

Ok, you guys covered a lot of interesting variables, but there is one more thing you didn't mention and i think it's worth to speak about: what if the actual game is not English? I mean the CD cover, the manual and even the game text's too. Does it change the price of a PC Game or do you even consider to buy it if you find one of these types on the internet? Of course i don't talk about old console games because of the region restrictions, but here in my area there are lots of German copies. (just to come up with one exact example) - Maybe we could count Japanese RPGs in this group.
I got a new NES classic edition for 60 dollars on Craigslist,,even more cool,, the guy knew it was worth way more and just wanted it to go to someone who would play with it.there really are good people out there..keep up the great videos!
Yes. Your rep even with store owners can mean a lot. The only thing to add is that price charting does have loose, CIB and Sealed prices for most games. It's pretty decent in seeing what retailers would expect to sell a good condition game at. Usually around $5 difference.
You should invite John again and talk about the new Mega Drive release! Is he gonna get it? What are his thoughts? Some cartridges and accessories will be (re)released.
Thank you Metal Jesus and Mr Hancock. I find this is all common sense which all comes back to and revolves around respect. If you respect the buyer or seller, yourself and the game or gaming peripheral etc. It should serve you well. I also think with people mentioning his "buy it now" had ruined ebay there are still ways to get some bargains but they mainly involve looking for bundles, collections and using the right keywords. Sometimes people mislabel games and you can find Auctions that way. Also through the menu type system instead of just keywords. I think Metal Jesus would have said all this in another video I vaguely remember. Maybe Hello can mention that here if the legend himself read this here. Thank's again for another great video. You are really providing a great service to games, collectors out there with your collection of videos. Great job.
I collect much besides games and trading is key. Also creating connections in the hobby can greatly increase the quality of any collection. Fellow collectors people in the business game developers are a great source. Sentimental value is fairly common in most hobbies involving collecting. As is the hoarder wonder how long before hoarding becomes a thing in gaming lol
i think if you a famous UA-cam video game collector it's easier 1 most UA-camrs stay with there own 2 people know you as for someone like me not so easy went on Craigslist seen green n64 for $75 been up there 2 months told the guy i trade you a slim ps1 original xbox with the big duke and dreamcast with games controller's. memory cards the guy said no i can get all that for $25 that he owns a video game store i hang up on him .
i dont trade games or collect or anything, but i enjoy this vids. feels like im hangin out and shooting the shit with yall. keep em coming MJ. great advice John.
Nice video! Really appreciate the 'if someone is attached to a game don't trade it from them' advice from Mr. Immortal... Good things will come to good people :)
I’ve traded televisions, and other items for video games on the Facebook market place. Honestly, the Facebook market place has some AWESOME stuff sometimes. #MetalJesusRocks #JohnHancock
I have go to tell you watching you guys has truly inspired me to start collecting. I am hating myself for getting rid of my gaming systems and games. As the new systems came out my old system was out the door. I recently broke my back at work and am now getting ready to have my 5th surgery and have been off work for over a year so money is very tight at my house. My wife would kill me if I decided I was going to take on a new hobby and start spending money on things that I don't NEED lol. So I have tons things laying around that I no longer use that may have value to someone else. For example I just traded a Samsung galaxy s1 for an original xbox, 2 playstation 2s and a modded playstation 1 and they also through in more games than I count. Later this evening I traded my old 5mp camera that I have not used in like 6 years for a Nintendo 64 with 4 controllers and a stack of games. This has become like a treasure hunt for me. I am hoping to find someone with a dusty sega genesis and 32x.that they are willing to trade. So guys please keep these pick up and trade videos coming. I wish I could post a picture of all the new games and systems that I have gotten by trading things I have just laying around. If you don't mind I will continue to update this thread as my trades happed, Thanks again guys keep up the good work
I want to up date.... since posting this I thought I would reach out to my friends on facebook I told them how I broke my back and had no money but was willing to trade things I had laying around. I told them I was just looking for their garage sale left overs and I was just looking for anything related to video games that had little to no value. I wish there were a way for me to put my screen shots from facebook because after I posted that I was looking. So as of the time of me typing this I have been given all the following for 100% FREE!!! I have been given an original NES, a Sega Genesis with 9 game and 2 controllers, 25 ps2 game,6 xbox 360 games, A ps3 and 14 games and 2 controllers, and a ps4 with 4 games and 2 controllers, and an amazon firestick jailbroke with the kodi program, I am not joking I wish could post pictures,
You can use Price Charting in more detail. It gives you direct links to completed auctions and separates by condition (loose, complete, sealed). It's easier than going to eBay and configuring search options in my opinion.
Price charting is nice for a lot of info at a glance, but ebay is better and not much harder. You just go to advanced search, type what you are looking for and hit "sold" listings (and completed but not sold if you want to see what price they don't sell at). It's literally 2 extra clicks and price charting tends to miss some listings for whatever reason. Always ebay if you want to nail down an accurate current price when buying or selling imo. That said, PC isn't as bad as John made it out.
My two best trades: Trade 1: About five Playstation Magazine demo discs. For Parasite Eve. I made sure they realized they were only demo discs too. We were kids at the time and the other kid was like: "Yeah, but I don't really like this game" So yeah, I was fine for that. Trade 2: Best one. I had borrowed Doom 64 from a friend. (Letting them borrow my Goldeneye 007) Well, they never gave me my game back and I didn't really want to keep Doom 64. Well I knew this guy at a local swap meet that sold and traded videogames. He had a system where if you had a newer/current system game. He'd trade you just about any game for an older system. So I traded my copy of Doom 64... for Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. NEVER regretted that one.
I have a pretty good thing going with my local retro gaming store. I usually buy games in bulk off of eBay craigslist and let go etc. so whenever I get games I'm not too fond of or just a double ill usually take it over to my store. I normally get good trade in value or equal trade in for 100% value of the game. They know me to be trustworthy I'm always upfront and honest with everything I trade in and I spent a decent amount of money there as well. I'm a repeat customer.
Here is a tip for you all. Stop trying to get over on people for a few bucks value and, NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. BUILD RAPPORT. There are many people in your area collecting. Are you competing? Yes, possibly, but everyone why only look dollars and cents. I know a bunch of people in my area who go to yard sales/estate sales and have certain stuff they focus on. We are all getting stuff below value, so we trade stuff at near value because we all find stuff that others need.
If you have another hobby that you collect stuff try trading in those communities. You'd be surprised how many people have old nintendo games in their attic that they don't care about. I used to collect old DE razors and all kinds of wet shaving stuff. I was in a ton of groups on FB and when i got into retro games i posted a lot of stuff and had a ton of people contact me with old games they had in their garage/attic/parents house.
You guys need to check Price charting again. I just recently started using that site. They now break it down to loose complete and new. It also has a feature where you can track all that have sold not just listed prices. With my games I will look at the loose price vs the complete price. Then I factor in condition of my game. And on most I average between the two prices. Point is price charting is not as bad as you guys make it seem.
obviously i am into vinyl..especialy rare independent records. and sometimtes trades are the only chance to get other rare stuff, if it never turns up. or just to safe a lotta money, as sometime you make good deals for a spare copy and can get another valued item with it. i love trading :)
Jon is awesome of course, but why do I need to be reminded about how many "complete" collections he owns in every video? Completionist collecting is more of a museum kinda thing, why prop it up as something to be coveted? Most people just buy games to play them. LOVE IT how Jon calls out pricecharting, that is NOT a legit site(it's run by the guy who runs one of the biggest ebay game stores).
The problem about ordering from e-bay while living in central Europe is that in the better case they charge +/- 25 dollars for shipping, or they simply don´t ship to your country at all...at least in that Amazon is slightly better...
Michel Alma you've done the right thing, l think X will be worth alot come 20 years time as the Wii U wasn't a massive seller and X will be a sort after game.
Trading is something I'm new to, but I like the general idea of it, though my collection as I have cultivated it thus far consists almost entirely of things I want to keep so I'm not yet in a position where trading is something I can see myself getting into at this point.
I would also suggest that if manuals, inserts, stuff like that, that came with the game are important to you, like it is for me, you should ask about that too. Seems obvious I guess.
I have a friend who is more into trading and selling games than he really is for collecting...He uses Pricecharting for all of his prices but of course wants to get the best deal for him so he can flip it. Gets really annoying.... But he also has a lot of the really rare and hard to find games for sale *shrug*. Great video!
A few weeks back at a convention I had a guy wanting my Megaman X3 for the PS1. He was all over it. Only thing he had I needed for my collection was a big box Mario Party 6, so I stacked some wanted commons to re-trade again, like 2 copies Ocarina of time and Megaman 3. Offcourse, since he wanted the X3 so badly, I pushed it beyond want I thought I would get. The lesson; no matter how badly you want something, both in trade and when buying; keep your emotions down, because the price will go up!
Lets say a game comes out on the PS4 that you already have on the PS3. Do you upgrade to the PS4 version and get rid of the PS3 version? Do you buy both?
The whole thing where he's trying to say that videogame price chart averages all listings, loose, complete, and sealed, under the same umbrella isn't true at all. They literally have those three as separate sections. That's how I can tell he's never used that site.
It wasn't you, it was John and he said the same incorrect thing several times. I'm not a fan of price charting, it's only ok if you need a rough idea of very many games in a short period of time or to look at how the game has sold longer term into the past. Some people are just going to take issue with knocking it for an issue that doesn't exist. I do what John does, but use BIN sold as well as it seems very odd to exclude those, especially when the sample size for some of these games is already tiny given ebay's limited time period window it has information for.
Every time I've been jonesing for a game and bought it on eBay I've end up paying plus or minus 10% of what it was saying on pricecharting. I think in general it is pretty accurate. Of course there is going to be exceptions... just because you check sold listing on ebay and someone did not know what they had and underpriced it does not mean that's what it is worth now. Pricecharting is helpful, ebay sold listings is helpful, having a brain to know when something is wrong, priceless.
When it comes to valuing games, I do use PriceCharting for a GENERAL IDEA of the value (they have separate sections for loose, complete, new) but it ultimately comes down to this: do I, personally, feel THAT game is worth THAT price? If not, I don't really care what others are willing to pay. I have my own max worth for any given game, and will never exceed it.
Price charting is flawed, but not terrible. The data does come from sold ebay listings, and you can click on the sales that pricecharting used to make that average and you'll get to see the game conditions. The overall price is an average, but you can still see the high and low prices the game sold for. The flaws are that sometimes an incomplete game will show up in the wrong category, and not all sales are included if an offer is made to and accepted by the seller.
I use "My Game Collection" on android. I downloaded half a dozen apps and tried them all for a bit before I decided which to use. Just search your app store for cataloging apps. There are tons of them, but I focused on ones dedicated to just game collecting. "My Game Collection" just happened to be the one that appealed to me, but it's hard to make a recommendation because everyone has different types of collections and different things they want out of a cataloging app.

I collect much besides games and trading is key. Also creating connections in the hobby can greatly increase the quality of any collection. Fellow collectors people in the business game developers are a great source. Sentimental value is fairly common in most hobbies involving collecting. As is the hoarder wonder how long before hoarding becomes a thing in gaming lol
i think if you a famous UA-cam video game collector it's easier 1 most UA-camrs stay with there own 2 people know you as for someone like me not so easy went on Craigslist seen green n64 for $75 been up there 2 months told the guy i trade you a slim ps1 original xbox with the big duke and dreamcast with games controller's. memory cards the guy said no i can get all that for $25 that he owns a video game store i hang up on him .
if there were a movie about you too John C Reilly would be IJH and Will Ferrel would be MJR

Two awesome people. Love you guys, keep up the good work
You should do a video on specific game series, especially final fantasy
I have been given an original NES, a Sega Genesis with 9 game and 2 controllers, 25 ps2 game,6 xbox 360 games, A ps3 and 14 games and 2 controllers, and a ps4 with 4 games and 2 controllers, and an amazon firestick jailbroke with the kodi program, I am not joking I wish could post pictures,
A game is only worth how much some one is willing to pay for it.
Yes it's called market value and works on any commodity
I hate over priced ebay sellers who put a game up for years on ebay for 4x the actual value of a game just to try to hype up the prices of rare games.
My two best trades:
Trade 1: About five Playstation Magazine demo discs.
NEVER regretted that one.
john hancock is so right on these views he shared here. dude is legit and id trade with him knowing hes gonna be honest with me
Awesome Metroid Shirt!!
Nice video MJR and John :D Very helpful stuff.
John always reminds me of Al from Home Improvement.
John seems like such a genuine guy
I have a pretty good thing going with my local retro gaming store. I usually buy games in bulk off of eBay craigslist and let go etc. so whenever I get games I'm not too fond of or just a double ill usually take it over to my store. I normally get good trade in value or equal trade in for 100% value of the game. They know me to be trustworthy I'm always upfront and honest with everything I trade in and I spent a decent amount of money there as well. I'm a repeat customer.
Terrific video, and a lot of the tips apply to things that are not video game related.
Great advise , thanks again for putting up great videos and usable content !!!
Thumbs up for Heatwave! I used to love racing as the Don Johnson Special.
We are all getting stuff below value, so we trade stuff at near value because we all find stuff that others need.
trade skills work better in small shops right?
OHHH DAMN.. i want that Metroid shirt!!!!!
MJR back with another great vid...
you two are awesome! I watch both of you. keep up the great episodes.
Great video, thanks guys!
Cool stuff guys! Thanks for this!
If you have another hobby that you collect stuff try trading in those communities. You'd be surprised how many people have old nintendo games in their attic that they don't care about. I used to collect old DE razors and all kinds of wet shaving stuff. I was in a ton of groups on FB and when i got into retro games i posted a lot of stuff and had a ton of people contact me with old games they had in their garage/attic/parents house.
this video was fantastic, thank you
Please do a snes buying guide with immortal john hand clock!! I'm begging you
You guys need to check Price charting again.
Best Guys EVER!!^^ pls make "playing a game" Videos together
these videos are great! you guys rock!
obviously i am into vinyl..especialy rare independent records. and sometimtes trades are the only chance to get other rare stuff, if it never turns up. or just to safe a lotta money, as sometime you make good deals for a spare copy and can get another valued item with it. i love trading :)
Last week i traded Watch Dogs 2 and Uncharted 4, for Xenoblade Chronicles X with artbook. I have no idea if that was a good trade, but it felt right
Michel Alma you've done the right thing, l think X will be worth alot come 20 years time as the Wii U wasn't a massive seller and X will be a sort after game.
OMG!!! I just noticed NOCTURNE on the bottom shelf next to The Immortal JH. That's one game my brother and I have a history with.
Actually pricecharting has separate sections for loose, CIB, and sealed. It's not using CIB when averaging a price for a loose cart.
I've used the site...I just misspoke. Thanks for watching.
Price Charting has also changed over the years. I still don't like it.
price charting is crap, there's games on there that are worth more loose than complete in box.
Can you recommend an inventory software that works on android and/or pc for keeping track of your collection.
medwardl try Gameye it's free and works awesome. Keeps track of what you own as well as pricing.
I use vgcollect.com/ personally.
medwardl I've been using regeneration, it's pretty good
I use "My Game Collection" on android. I downloaded half a dozen apps and tried them all for a bit before I decided which to use. Just search your app store for cataloging apps. There are tons of them, but I focused on ones dedicated to just game collecting. "My Game Collection" just happened to be the one that appealed to me, but it's hard to make a recommendation because everyone has different types of collections and different things they want out of a cataloging app.
what Facebook groups would you personally recommend console and handheld games? and also what is the big box group you follow?
Start with ones that are somewhat local to you. Also, do search for "big box PC" on Facebook and you'll find the one I showed.
Great video guys!
