12:30 Why does the King's Guard slap the horse?
The purpose of guards slapping their horses when dismounting is to ensure the horse is prepared for the change in weight distribution as the guard descends from the horse.
The first one on the neck is essential to tell the horse, "good job." The second slap is to inform the horse that there is an excessive displacement of weight on one side at dismount.

    WHO ARE THE KING'S GUARD?
Formed in 1969, the regiment emerged from the merger of the Royal Horse Guards ("the Blues") and the Royal Dragoons ("the Royals"), units with roots in the mid-17th century. Serving globally, it had roles in Northern Ireland, the Cold War in West Germany, the Falklands War, UN missions in Bosnia, and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was part of key defense strategies and reconnaissance missions. Notably, Prince William and Prince Harry joined as cornets in 2006.
HOW LONG DO THE ROYAL GUARDS AND ROYAL HORSES WORK?
After the officer checks them at 4:00 p.m., everyone, whether they're on horseback or not, will be done for the day. Two guards on horses watch the entrance to Horse Guards on Whitehall from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. They switch out every hour.
    WHY THEY SLAP THE HORSE?
The purpose of guards slapping their horses when dismounting is to ensure the horse is prepared for the change in weight distribution as the guard descends from the horse.
The first one on the neck is essential to tell the horse, "good job." The second slap is to inform the horse that there is an excessive displacement of weight on one side at dismount.
HORSES ON HOLIDAY IN THE UK
Following the conclusion of the Summer Ceremonial Season, these diligent military horses are respectfully sent to the LEICESTERSHIRE countryside for a well-deserved period of rest and recuperation. One may observe them taking a break on the beaches of Holkham in Norfolk, where they are free to enjoy themselves.
During their six-week vacation, the horses are free to roam the verdant fields, inhale the invigorating country air, and revel in the delight of mud baths. At the break of dawn, they are escorted to the square at Hyde Park Barracks, where horse-drawn carriages await to transport them beyond the city limits. Their meticulously trimmed coats are allowed to grow naturally, and their metal shoes are removed. It is a joyous occasion for these majestic creatures!

The King's Guard and the King's Life Guard are two different things. The King's Guard is the infantry soldiers who are on sentry duty at Buckingham and St. James's Palace. Usually the five Foot Guards regiments do this but just last month The Queen's Gurkha Signals were on duty at the palaces and just over a year ago 23 Para Engineers Regiment did it. Whoever is assigned to guard the palaces becomes The Kings Guard.
The King's Life Guard is the mounted guard at Horse Guards. Usually done by the two regiments of the Household Cavalry - The Life Guards and The Blues & Royals - except for the month of July when The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery takes over the duties.

I think you’re a mind-reader!!! I was just wondering why the guards hit the horse on dismount. Thanks for the info 😊. God bless from Oxford, Michigan USA 🇺🇸.

You're persisting with spreading false information. Clearly you do not understand what you are seeing. The first pat (not a slap) on the neck is to reward the horse, the second is always on the saddle flap (not directly on the horse) and is a signal from the lead trooper to his colleague(s) so that they dismount together. If it was about weight displacement they would all do it but if you look closely you will see that it is only the trooper in front who does it.

@gyalist Cheers for the good explanation. I've been wondering about both gestures since I first saw them. Now I know the meaning. Thank you very much!

I basically told this content creator the exact same thing 4 days ago when I spotted some missing info (The Life Guards) and misinformation. Not sure if he took my comment as an offence when I was only trying to help him to get the information right. I didn’t even use any offensive language to correct him at all. I even directed him to the troopers from the Blues and Royals’s TikTok page so that he didn’t have to take my words for just what I said, but I had a receipt/prove for my words. And now he posted this video with a title like this and still insisted providing the wrong information… quite disappointing really. So I was curious where this “weight-shift when dismount” information came from, I googled and found it was from Quora back in 2018, but the people answering the question never said or showed they were ex HCAV or currently in HCAV, but they were just random people making assumptions. And now it has been taken as “the” correct answer. It is just mind boggling, and it has been blown out of proportion. My question is why no one asks why it’s only one trooper patting the saddle, not 2 if it’s weight shift/distribution? How does two and more horses know weight shift when only one is patted?

Me sorprende que a los turistas les sorprenda ver andar al Guardia Real para visitar a los que están en los box. 😮😮.Los miran cómo si fuera un bicho raro. 😮😮😮
