I got about 80 pages into this book. Hated every page. The way the heroine kept sneering down her nose at other women for being "weak" and "girly" irked me to no end. Well sorry all women weren't born with superpowers like you girlie.
Oh. My. God. YES! I haven’t read this book in 2 years, so I forgot all about that! The first 3 books are (mostly) TRASH! Fire, the second book, isn’t as bad. But, oh my god, Bitterblue SUCKS.
Or leave it the same way I understand what she saying about the plot. I get the concept is a little bit overdone but to be fair this book came out 3 years ago from the video so it wasn't so overdone at the time of the books publishing. Also just because one person dislikes the book doesn't mean that you should change your entire book there are thousands of people that really enjoyed the book
That's literally the most annoying thing a writer or any kind of artist that displays a story can do: create this really interesting plot, but execute it poorly that you end up thinking 'that could've been so much better'. I think I might still read it, though, since I liked the main plot. Good video, Lily, love ya.
I remember reading this book in high school. I didn't dislike it but I remember the ending being Soooo abrupt... I threw the book away and started judging my life choices.
I feel like there is more people here for her personality rather then for her reviews I bet there is people who haven't even read a book in their lives lol
I'm starting to read again. Not specifically because of Lily, I'm fascinated by this whole "booktube" thing. I don't really follow their recommendations either - necessarily. It's just kind of a culmination of things. I knew I wanted to read more, because I feel like I get dumber every year, and it's supposed to help your gray matter. Then randomly, I guess cuz I watch writing videos, UA-cam started recommending reading videos. So here I am. This' a really long way of saying you're right though, because I started watching these vids before I got back into reading. It's hard to watch some of the others. "No bullshit" is always a keen approach.
At the moment I'm reading Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick (author of Hush Hush series should be pretty good in theory) and it's complete utter shit but I'm too stubborn to not finish it.
LilyCReads that's great I hope you do a new book review soon I want to get some new books but I have no money that's the story of every book lovers life. 😂
I literally JUST finished watching all your videos and I read super slow and I always think I'm not good enough to be considered a reader and you make me feel welcome and normal so thank you so fuckin much. You're cool af
Hey Lily, I love how honest your reviews and videos are! It's great that you provide reasons as to why a book is bad and also why it is good (like talking about parts that you like/dislike). The way you explain why you like/dislike a book is really helpful and you do it in such an eloquent way instead of saying "I just love it!" I'm just loving your personality and channel overall! Thanks for uploading so frequently for us xx
Ugh, I hate anti-climactic endings like that. I was considering possibly reading that book one day because BookTubers hyped it up but after this review, definitely not going to. Thanks for helping me dodge a bullet! Love your reviews!
Hey, at least the author's improved. There are a lot of authors who get worse over time. And there are authors who are shitty from the start, that I wonder which demon they supposedly sell their souls with to be published let alone become a fucking bestseller.
syakira azlan shah Books, like every other form of art and entertainment, are subjective, so I would suggest you try reading the first book and see if you like it. Me.... I really don't like that series, at all: I think the writing is bad, and it has zero to no worldbuilding, not to mention that it is slowly becoming full of cringy sex scenes that no one asked for, and I just dislike pretty much every character, specially the mary sue main character. But you may disagree if you read it, so give it a try if you want, so you can form your opinion of it! ❤
syakira azlan shah If that wasn't the answer you wanted, then let's put it another way: The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas is absolute shit, the writing isn't the best, the characters are annoying, the main character is a pain in the ass mary sue, there is toxic relationships, the worlbuilding is non-existing, the "romance" is tacky, the sex scenes are just horrible and all over the place in her latest books, etc. Not to mention people are starting to notice she takes some "inspiration" from the work of other authors, if you know what I mean. ~ If you want to read some fantasy that has good writing, amazing worlbuilding, and very interesting characters, I suggest something like A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones by George R R Martin, or some of the classics of the genre like The Lord of the rings. If you just want good YA I suggest the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo, wich has amazing diverse interesting characters and a good story. You're welcome.
Awesome! I loved this book when I first read it, but it has dimmed a bit over time. So I would agree with you. It had great beginnings but it fell apart and changed direction too many times.
I think a lot of people judge Graceling because they read the novels in their late teens. As a 13-year-old, I loved this novel and Katsa was really inspiring to me. I feel it's really easy to criticize this book when your mind is more developed. It's a very young YA book like what did you expect.
Anna B people have different opinions my guesses are the book was aiming for 13-18 maybe their are people older than you that like the book I think it all comes down to personal reference. I'm 14 and I think this book sounds really interesting and I've read books like 'pride &prejudice ' , 'inspecter calls ' just to clarify I respect your opinion .
Just to let you know, it's true that other senses become heightened when someone goes blind. I went blind when I was 24, and sounds and smells seemed to be much stronger. I even developed a sort of a sixth sense, basically my instincts became stronger. However, as my sight slowly returned, my other senses returned to almost normal. I say almost because I'm still partly blind and my hearing and sense of smell is still a little more than average. Just thought I'd share this little bit of info with you because you seemed skeptical of the idea. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
i somehow felt it as an honor that you took the time to review this book, even though you trashed it and i actually loved this book when i read it in middle school (i'm in college now LOL). I CANT BE MAD! I feel like i'vee been graced today with this hilarious video 😂
I actually love this book after several times reading it, and having found your channel just recently (and binge-watching your roasts) I was kinda expecting you to hate it and give bad points about it, but what you actually said were very understandable and reasonable and very agreeable. Like you definitely made me think, "yeah, how can i have missed that?" TBVH, you just gave me a whole new perspective on this novel.
You should read The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. I actually found it better than the Mortal Instruments series (my opinion). TMI was good until the 3rd book. Then it just became repetitive. Even the main plot devices were the same in each book. In comparison, the TIF series was more developed, and I actually cared for the three main characters.
Sydney M yes!!! I've read Graceling too and can say that it has literally nothing to ASOIAF, and I read that series when I was still into YA so I don't think it's as difficult as the size of it would suggest.
I really REALLY want to read it. But I don't want to risk it because the series is not done and the author is old! It sounds horrible but I don't want to risk it and then have him pull a Millenium one on me. Should I go for it?
Glad you didn't hate the book, but probably won't read it. Can't wait for you to review A Pleasure and a Calling it looks really interesting and trying to figure out if it's worth my time
I would really love to watch a video about a book you really loved :) I love your rants, just would like to hear about some books you're really passionate about
I definitely enjoyed this book when I read it (it's been a while though, I totally couldn't remember anyone's names XD) and while there wasn't an action filled climax at the end, like you said the king's Grace was effectively manipulation, so I think it was more about her overcoming that, because she's obviously got such a physical advantage over everyone else naturally. I will say the romance felt pretty awkward, but I did like how strong of a person Katsa was in her opinions, and that she never turned into some kind of broody push over; she was very much defined by the military nature of her Grace, and life as the king's executioner, and not in any way ever presented to be a romantic person. I mean, as far as I can remember anyway XD
I think it's a great book for younger readers or if you're new to YA fantasy. And I completely loved the romance! Po is one of my favourite love interests ever. Did we ever find out who kidnapped the grandpa and why, though?
Yea i think at some point they mention that King Leck tried to bring him to Monsea in order to torture him, and in doing so further torture his own wife and child when they were sealed in their rooms.
I have read this book, so I thought "Oh, I can finally follow along with this one and compare what I thought about it" but I can't for the life of me remember what fucking happened. I remember thinking is was good, I think? And then I waited for her to go more in depth thinking it would jog my memory and its just blank. What she says is true. It's a forgettable novel.
i read this book before and I quite liked it! especially the part in the snow because like you said it was really well written and you felt for the characters. Also the book had some feminist moments that made me smile a lot. It's not my fav book but it's good and i'd read it again. i thought it was more about the character development than the actual story, so no there wasn't a big battle or something but it didn't feel necessary. Of course it has been years since i read the book but that was the impression i had when reading it.
I recommend reading the "Thousand Pieces of You" Trilogy. I really enjoyed it and I'd love to hear your opinions on it. (It's not a cliche love novel as the title would suggest. It's a sci-fi.) Much love to you! Have a good one!
I love how real she is lol. Her thoughts are literally what goes through my head when i read books 😂 she doesnt care and she is so honest i love it lol
hey lily, when i finished high school i had a similar thing where i was over a lot of the YA i'd been reading bc they were all the same! wondering if u might try get into other "adult" genres? i started reading nonfiction and essays (sounds boring af but rebecca solnit, teju cole etc r cool lol) and it kinda got me out of my slump. glad u liked a pleasure and a calling tho, just dumb to see this was a bit shit. but luv ur honest review as always 💘
I really recommend reading The Rithmatist! I freaking love that book and the characters feel so real and flawed and learning about the main character and his flaw kind of made me think about myself at one point in the story. I think the mystery is good, towards the end though it might get a bit..stretched, but all together I think you may like. Plus there is no insta-love and all possible relationships are just HINTED at in this book. The way it out to be when you have a series. okay ill stop rambling now, love your channel btw!
If you need a book to rant about I suggest Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I wanted to like it because of the concept but I found it incredibly frustrating. It's like the author took all the best parts of other books and tried to use them for herself. She even said that she wrote the book in hopes that it becomes a movie so you can tell the quality isn't very good. I didn't even finish the second book if that says anything.
i honestly havent read most of the books youve reviewed but i watch them all just because you make anything 10x more interesting literally you could read 20 grocery lists and Id still be watching
I would like to hear your thoughts on Ready Player One because when it came out everyone raved about it but like six years later reviews are saying it's trash and I don't know what happened in the interim, it's the same book
i do not know why youtube recomended me your videos, i rarely read but holy shit i am so happy that i found you, bc fuck me you are fucking hilarious, keep up the great work
Honestly, i would love to see your review of at least one book of asoiaf. I'm reading the first book and it's hard to get through, when you already seen the show. But i take breaks in reading it and i believe that i'll finish it somehow. It's really sad that you won't read it.
Honestly once you get past the first book, the differences from the show will start becoming more obvious. the first season played it straight, the second season is where i started going wtf
Wow! I agreed with you on every point! I'm so glad it wasn't just me LOL I'm surprised you didn't mention how the romance resolved. I won't be specific, because spoilers, but people say Twilight's romance is a terrible example for young people. I thought this was a far worse example. Anyway, great vid! Thanks!
this book was pretty bad. all i remember is katsa mistreating her horse and some little 12 year old girl who was unbelievably intelligent for her age. or maybe it was the fact that she spoke like a grown adult.
My only nitpick in your review is: When you lost one of your senses (like eyes) other senses do evolve. There literally people who are blind uses echo locator skill to move around (normally only bats has it). So its more like how to handle evolves.
I know you're probably not looking for recommendations, but my favourite book is one that not many people have read so I just thought I'd throw it out there. The Naming by Alison Croggan is the first in the series and I loved it so much when I read it. To be honest I havent read it in years, but I remember being just enthralled by the world and the magic and the characters. Anyway, thanks for sharing your reviews with all of us, they're awesome!
I actually believe I had read both Graceling and Fire some years ago, I can't say I was especially entranced though because i remember nothing of Graceling at all and very little of Fire. I felt like Fire was a stronger book but overall still didn't create a lasting impression on me.
I read this book a couple years ago and I barely remember anything about it because of how little of an impact it had on me. I remember most of the books I read, but this one was just... not worth remembering? Like you said, it had an interesting concept but it didn't really go anywhere.
I'd really love to know your thoughts on James Patterson's Maximum Ride series. It's a gold mine when it comes to horrible books. Specifically "Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports." Tbh I didn't even finish the series. I read to book 3 (the book referenced above) and wanted to hang myself. Book 1 and 2 were pretty good in my opinion. But book 3 was the most horrendous book I've ever read with the most unnecessary twists and turns in the plot I've ever seen. It was pretty much just useless fillers that the author attempted to create as major plots points. But my god. It was just infuriating to read. I've thrown the book 3 times reading it, had to take a hiatus midway, and the only thing keeping me from shredding the book right then and there was the fact I was loaning it from the library. Of course considering it is a series I realize it would be a waste of time to have you read it, but I just had to get it out there that it is a horrible read. I've never been so furious reading a book as when I've read that one.
I totally agree with what she says in this vid: i did like graceling, but i didn't think it was as interesting as it could have been. and with fire, the book basically abandoned the whole concept of graces entirely. but i LOVED bitterblue. i think that she's a really interesting and well-developed character, and her plot is actually incredibly dark and deals with the aftermath of graceling realistically. graceling and fire are okay, but bitterblue is actually one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time.
I read this like 10 years ago and always had a fond memory of the Graces as a fantasy power system, but after a re-read I found it so underwhelming. Having remembered the twist of Katsa's Grace being something different than what it was first described as, I did feel the foreshadowing to it was handled well. I realized that the not-so climactic faceoff with king Leck was something I suppressed in memory; it felt unearned and didn't feel like the appropriate resolution given how long the confrontation was spent being hyped up.
People need to write book characters like video game characters. For every strength you need a weakness or disadvantage to balance
True. No real human is perfect, people. We're weak and we have flaws. To everyone who writes characters that don't; Fuck Off.
That's what I did, I wrote my novel kind of like video game ^_^
so true!
+S. N. Lemoing published it?
the main characters all have weaknesses for instance the main character katsa is extremely bad in Social scenarios.
She's uploading regularly... should we be worried?
yes
The world is ending then.
Silvereyes 24 Prepare for the Armagedon. Good luck to all
Silvereyes 24 probably
Silvereyes 24 didn't this joke die already? Enough, dude.
I got about 80 pages into this book. Hated every page. The way the heroine kept sneering down her nose at other women for being "weak" and "girly" irked me to no end. Well sorry all women weren't born with superpowers like you girlie.
Yeah I hate the idea that in order to be a "strong independent badass female" you apparently are supposed to suppress or discard your femininity.
# @@xlittlevalkyrie:
You are not a strong independant woman until you have killed your first opponent in a bar-fight with a beer-keg...
Very pick me girl
I dislike this book as well
Oh. My. God. YES! I haven’t read this book in 2 years, so I forgot all about that! The first 3 books are (mostly) TRASH! Fire, the second book, isn’t as bad. But, oh my god, Bitterblue SUCKS.
You should review Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I'd like to see your thoughts on that because I can see you roasting it.
I'd love to see a review of the series: I gave up with Queen of Shadows because I got sick of Aelin. (Although if others love the series then cool.)
Writing tip: imagine your book being reviewed by lily, and fix it from there.
Logic is a must have lol
Or leave it the same way I understand what she saying about the plot. I get the concept is a little bit overdone but to be fair this book came out 3 years ago from the video so it wasn't so overdone at the time of the books publishing. The concept of the graces reminds me of this one Japanese comic called Alice Academy/Gakuen Alice.
01yhesi love GA!
That's one of my favourite manga ever ❤️❤️
01yhesi I fucking love Gakuen Alice, despite its cringy middle school moments, it's so lovely and adorable, and I legit cried near the end.
Graceling seems like the cliche "some people have enhanced powers". Personally I liked Darker than Black - Contractors have crazy problems.
OMG SAAAME!! It's my all time favourite manga
I remember reading this book in high school. I didn't dislike it but I remember the ending being Soooo abrupt... I threw the book away and started judging my life choices.
5:17 Is this the real female Colt?? Savage Thunder, is that you???
Valkyrie. LMAOOO
Please read The Song Of Achilles
Yes!
Charlotte Poles smith LOVE THAT BOOK 🎉❤️
YES!
Yes please!! 💛😭
FUCK YES this book is AMAZING and the reason i nearly dissolved into a flood of tears on the bus, something i have a policy of not doing.
Lily... blink twice if you're being held captive... regular uploading schedule??? Is this real life?
I feel like there is more people here for her personality rather then for her reviews
I bet there is people who haven't even read a book in their lives lol

futurestoryteller im the same. Lily started the whole booktube thing but all booktubers got me reading again.
can't that be a good thing? She might inspire non-readers to pick up a book
it sounds like you've never read a book in your life. 'There is people'? sorry, mean, but grammar is important.
Ella G hey I'm not saying it's a bad thing
wow queen of uploading
At the moment I'm reading Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick (author of Hush Hush series should be pretty good in theory) and it's complete utter shit but I'm too stubborn to not finish it.
i feel for you
I actually kind of liked Black Ice, but the main is SUCH a dumb bitch.
Lily talked about it in the books she hates vid, she's just rooting for the killer XD
The only Black Ice that has my heart is the AC/DC album
CJ Anne I completely forgot about that! Damn it!!
Anyone else a little shocked that this little rant review is only 9 minutes! 😂😂😂
Wouldn't consider this a rant review lmao, but i didn't have much say about it haha
Probably because this book isn't bad enough to deserve a full rant review. What a shame:)
Is never too late for a lily review
Hey Lily, I love how honest your reviews and videos are! It's great that you provide reasons as to why a book is bad and also why it is good (like talking about parts that you like/dislike). For some reason you describing the gracelings and their grace's/talents at the start reminds me of the cutie marks the ponies have in My little Pony.
please roast throne of glass next, queen👑
Lacrymosa Queen That is a series that needs some serious roasting 👏
Callie Altair is it bad.. cuz I want to add it to my tbr list?

lol sorry but i read this in 8th grade, 13 y.o., and thought it was a mess/trash, first negative book report i gave in my life lmao
I read this in 7th grade and I hated it lol
Anna B people have different opinions my guesses are the book was aiming for 13-18 maybe their are people older than you that like the book I think it all comes down to personal reference. I'm 14 and I think this book sounds really interesting and I've read books like 'pride &prejudice ' , 'inspecter calls ' just to clarify I respect your opinion .
Anna B I agree, I read this when I was really young and liked it a lot! It also taught me some stuff on period and birth control haha
I had a similar experience. When I was little I absolutely loved Graceling, but when I got older I began disliking aspects of it.
Read STEPHEN KING!!!
Just to let you know, it's true that other senses become heightened when someone goes blind. I went blind when I was 24, and sounds and smells seemed to be much stronger. Graceling is my all time favorite book, I would recommend it to everyone!
THE QUEEN HAS UPLOADED A NEW VIDEO I REPEAT THE QUEEN HAS UPLOADED A NEW VIDEO.
Yo lily you're literally the best book reviewer up in this bitch. I only come to you for book opinions, no one else lmao

tag yourself as a graced kid (i'm a useless one)
PLEASE read A Song of Ice and Fire. By far the best fantasy books of our time
Second this!
Sydney M yes!!! I've read Graceling too and can say that it has literally nothing to ASOIAF, and I read that series when I was still into YA so I don't think it's as difficult as the size of it would suggest.

Glad you didn't hate the book, but probably won't read it. Can't wait for you to review A Pleasure and a Calling it looks really interesting and trying to figure out if it's worth my time
I would really love to watch a video about a book you really loved :) I love your rants, just would like to hear about some books you're really passionate about
There is actually one just around the corner !!
LilyCReads yay !
Lily's favorite is "To Kill a Mockingbird," right?
Gonnna be "A Pleasure and a Calling": watch.
Holy.sh*t. 83k!? omg So proud of ya girl!
I wholeheartedly agree that Fire was a better book, but that better series exist. So glad to see you around Lily!

QUEEN IS BACK
I read this book solely so that I could watch your review, the second I finished the last page I started watching it. Love you!!
I love the way she describes the book😂😂
I recommend reading the "Thousand Pieces of You" Trilogy. I really enjoyed it and I'd love to hear your opinions on it. (It's not a cliche love novel as the title would suggest. It's a sci-fi.)
Much love to you! Have a good one!

The urge to watch even tho i wanna read the books is so strong im
"It's just meh" book ratings with lily
You should check out Kiss of Deception if you have the time. It has a really interesting plot twist in the end! Love you Lily
hey lily, when i finished high school i had a similar thing where i was over a lot of the YA i'd been reading bc they were all the same! wondering if u might try get into other "adult" genres? i started reading nonfiction and essays (sounds boring af but rebecca solnit, teju cole etc r cool lol) and it kinda got me out of my slump.
glad u liked a pleasure and a calling tho, just dumb to see this was a bit shit. but luv ur honest review as always 💘
Your so honest with your reviews, love your videos ❤
You're back!! Hey girl!! ily and your vids- they bomb ❤️
You best believe I've never read these books and probably never will but I still watched until the end for Lily's great personality
I will probably never read this book but I like Lily's reviews so...
Hearing reviews about books like these actually gives me some hope for my own writing.
THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT THANKS
I really recommend reading The Rithmatist! I freaking love that book and the characters feel so real and flawed and learning about the main character and his flaw kind of made me think about myself at one point in the story. I think the mystery is good, towards the end though it might get a bit..stretched, but all together I think you may like. Plus there is no insta-love and all possible relationships are just HINTED at in this book. The way it out to be when you have a series. okay ill stop rambling now, love your channel btw!
She's the person i would recommend all my favourite books to so I could hear her drag them
Lily's going places!!! 🌹✨ Look at those subs!
Can you guys suggest books I should read?
I just bought the book today and I'm REALLY excited to read it.
I didn't even finish the second book if that says anything.
i honestly havent read most of the books youve reviewed but i watch them all just because you make anything 10x more interesting literally you could read 20 grocery lists and Id still be watching
i trust your reviews a lot thank you because this book is on my TBR and i really needed a good review about it
I would like to hear your thoughts on Ready Player One because when it came out everyone raved about it but like six years later reviews are saying it's trash and I don't know what happened in the interim, it's the same book
i do not know why youtube recomended me your videos, i rarely read
but holy shit i am so happy that i found you, bc fuck me you are fucking hilarious, keep up the great work
I hate this book! The toxic relationship makes it inappropriate for young readers, yet older readers will be bored.
I recommend reading The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater! I read the series last year and loved it
Ayeeeeeeeee A review late at night to end my day 😊
Honestly, i would love to see your review of at least one book of asoiaf.
I'm so glad it wasn't just me LOL
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the romance resolved. I won't be specific, because spoilers, but people say Twilight's romance is a terrible example for young people. I thought this was a far worse example. Anyway, great vid! Thanks!
Legend says that if you're really early lily might reply
nah it's just a rumour
hey lily i'm so happy u are uploading regularly! i love your videos and am so happy you came back. :)
this book was pretty bad. all i remember is katsa mistreating her horse and some little 12 year old girl who was unbelievably intelligent for her age. or maybe it was the fact that she spoke like a grown adult.
My only nitpick in your review is: When you lost one of your senses (like eyes) other senses do evolve. There literally people who are blind uses echo locator skill to move around (normally only bats has it).
So its more like how to handle evolves.
New video from Lily! Yay! I suggest you read Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. That book is great.
Hey Lilly! Love your videos and reviews 😊
I just watched all your Harry Potter reviews and seen this and got so happy! You need to read Bitterblue!
I've always had a soft spot for this book
Tbh I love your reviews, you're kinda keeping me in the readers' circle even tho I have no time 😂
You should review "the wizards first rule." There are some... Interesting scenes in it
Would you consider possibly making a video of your top fantasy book recommendations? Also your eyebrows are nice lol
Read Fablehaven! its quite unknown but I want to see what u think!
You should read the lumatere chronicles by Melina Marchetta🙏🏻
I would Love to hear your thoughts about the series!
OMG. "All of my fucks about the characters have just left my body." ROFL 2:34
I never realized this when I read this book, but Po is basically a Force user.
BINCH I ALMOST SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THIS VIDEO IN MY NOTIFS YAS KWEENN
I read this like 10 years ago and always had a fond memory of the Graces as a fantasy power system, but after a re-read I found it so underwhelming. Having remembered the twist of Katsa's Grace being something different than what it was first described as, I did feel the foreshadowing to it was handled well. I realized that the not-so climactic faceoff with king Leck was something I suppressed in memory; it felt unearned and didn't feel like the appropriate resolution given how long the confrontation was spent being hyped up.
I've read Fire but not Graceling yet. Your reviews actually help me decide if I want to read these or not.
Damn !! I am early !! 😍😍
Gracling sounds interesting !!
But hearing you describe it ... I am rethinking it now 🤓
What's funny to me is the "mind reading but only when you're thinking about me" is literally from a TV show where kids have super powers, Misfits.
I gave this book a 'Meh' rating and I agree with your that while I wouldn't tell anyone NOT to read it, I also won't tell them you MUST read this.
