      I'm starting to read again. Not specifically because of Lily, I'm fascinated by this whole "booktube" thing. I don't really follow their recommendations either - necessarily. It's just kind of a culmination of things. I knew I wanted to read more, because I feel like I get dumber every year, and it's supposed to help your gray matter. Then randomly, I guess cuz I watch writing videos, UA-cam started recommending reading videos. So here I am.
      This' a really long way of saying you're right though, because I started watching these vids before I got back into reading. It's hard to watch some of the others. "No bullshit" is always a keen approach.

I get the concept is a little bit overdone but to be fair this book came out 3 years ago from the video so it wasn't so overdone at the time of the books publishing. Also just because one person dislikes the book doesn't mean that you should change your entire book there are thousands of people that really enjoyed the book

    That's literally the most annoying thing a writer or any kind of artist that displays a story can do: create this really interesting plot, but execute it poorly that you end up thinking 'that could've been so much better'. I think I might still read it, though, since I liked the main plot. Good video, Lily, love ya.

      syakira azlan shah Books, like every other form of art and entertainment, are subjective, so I would suggest you try reading the first book and see if you like it. Me.... I really don't like that series, at all: I think the writing is bad, and it has zero to no worldbuilding, not to mention that it is slowly becoming full of cringy sex scenes that no one asked for, and I just dislike pretty much every character, specially the mary sue main character. But you may disagree if you read it, so give it a try if you want, so you can form your opinion of it! ❤

      @nurhannah8334 7 років тому

      Callie Altair Thank you..

    • @mt6897
      @mt6897 7 років тому +3

      syakira azlan shah If that wasn't the answer you wanted, then let's put it another way: The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas is absolute shit, the writing isn't the best, the characters are annoying, the main character is a pain in the ass mary sue, there is toxic relationships, the worlbuilding is non-existing, the "romance" is tacky, the sex scenes are just horrible and all over the place in her latest books, etc. Not to mention people are starting to notice she takes some "inspiration" from the work of other authors, if you know what I mean. ~ If you want to read some fantasy that has good writing, amazing worlbuilding, and very interesting characters, I suggest something like A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones by George R R Martin, or some of the classics of the genre like The Lord of the rings. If you just want good YA I suggest the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo, wich has amazing diverse interesting characters and a good story. You're welcome.

    Just to let you know, it's true that other senses become heightened when someone goes blind. I went blind when I was 24, and sounds and smells seemed to be much stronger. I even developed a sort of a sixth sense, basically my instincts became stronger. However, as my sight slowly returned, my other senses returned to almost normal. I say almost because I'm still partly blind and my hearing and sense of smell is still a little more than average. Just thought I'd share this little bit of info with you because you seemed skeptical of the idea. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

    I definitely enjoyed this book when I read it (it's been a while though, I totally couldn't remember anyone's names XD) and while there wasn't an action filled climax at the end, like you said the king's Grace was effectively manipulation, so I think it was more about her overcoming that, because she's obviously got such a physical advantage over everyone else naturally. I will say the romance felt pretty awkward, but I did like how strong of a person Katsa was in her opinions, and that she never turned into some kind of broody push over; she was very much defined by the military nature of her Grace, and life as the king's executioner, and not in any way ever presented to be a romantic person. I mean, as far as I can remember anyway XD

    1:55 - "It's not like, a really terrible book, and oh my god don't read it. I'm just saying there are better books out there."
    The personal review starts with that ^ and then has since devolved to the point where in the comments you've said "don't waste your precious time, the book isn't worth it in my opinion."
    I think your reviews are generally admired for how blunt you are, however, all that ^ is muddled. So I guess that's where my issue lies for this video. I know I gave a lot of leniency to Cashore's writing because this was one of the first books in this genre I read (a few years ago, as a mid-20s adult). But that is the thing, this book is on a lot of recommendations lists for people new to the genre. Personally, I think there is a place for this book in that context.
    Also, I got a strong impression that a big problem for you was not being able to buy into the book's reasoning. I mean the graces evolve like one does while going through puberty/training and with time, practice, and experience they reveal their true depth. Plus, the shade at 8:21-8:28, for an explanation... that is an actual thing that happens to normal human beings in our world. Why exactly is it hard to swallow in a world where there are especially gifted people?
    Other than that, all your other points are valid. Plus the additional point that this book is criticized for its version of feminism--being extreme against anything too "girly" and equating that kind of femininity with weakness. I understand perhaps not wanting to touch on that, but I think that's more of a sound criticism that deserves the look from 8:28.
    Finally, I think Fire was my favourite from the series, even though it was a bit jarring at first being so different from Graceling. By the last book it wasn't strange but... I'm curious what you'll have to say about Bitterblue.

    You should read The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. I actually found it better than the Mortal Instruments series (my opinion). TMI was good until the 3rd book. Then it just became repetitive. Even the main plot devices were the same in each book. In comparison, the TIF series was more developed, and I actually cared for the three main characters.

    Lily,, girl listen... if u don't want to read insta-love, trope-y, conveniently plotted and predictable books u need to tread through YA carefully. Based on what u like I think u should read the rest of Gillian Flynn's stuff, maybe Megan Abbott's books, Ryu Murakami's Audition, The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter maybe(?)
    Good YA high fantasy include Cindy Williams Chima's books. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater is a really really good urban fantasy that puts a lot more importance on friendship and platonic love than it does romance.
    Idk man I stopped reading a lot bc i only knew about YA books and a lot of what I read was just extremely underwhelming so I hope u find more books u like

    I read Graceling about 7 years ago and I dnf'd it. I thought Katsas grace was dumb, because everyone can be a killer with enough training and also when Katsa and Bo were suddenly fucking in the woods I was like "...wat?"
    I didn't get to the point where her real grace is revealed, but it is even dumber than the first one, I mean, she's immortal now or what? Now THAT'S convenient.

    I read it awhile ago, so take this with a grain of salt, but I feel like Bitterblue is actually a lot more interesting than Graceling, what with the spoiler-y mystery and all. Unfortunately it kind of requires reading Graceling to make sense.

    If you need a book to rant about I suggest Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I wanted to like it because of the concept but I found it incredibly frustrating. It's like the author took all the best parts of other books and tried to use them for herself. She even said that she wrote the book in hopes that it becomes a movie so you can tell the quality isn't very good. I didn't even finish the second book if that says anything.

    So its more like how to handle evolves.

    i read this book before and I quite liked it! especially the part in the snow because like you said it was really well written and you felt for the characters. Also the book had some feminist moments that made me smile a lot. It's not my fav book but it's good and i'd read it again. i thought it was more about the character development than the actual story, so no there wasn't a big battle or something but it didn't feel necessary. Of course it has been years since i read the book but that was the impression i had when reading it.

    Sorry, but my petty side gets a bit annoyed when people always call it GoT and not its proper series name, A Song of Ice and Fire... especially since Game of Thrones is barely even the same story now. It has p much become the showrunners live action fanfic, and not the good kind...just an illogical mess of plot holes, sex, dick jokes, butchered story lines and characterizations.

    • @Risbarb
      @Risbarb 7 років тому +10

      I know. And naming the show Game of Thrones was kind of the first sign that it was mislead. The whole point of the book titles is to grow in importance. The game of thrones doesn't mean anything compared to surviving the winter.

    • @nm541
      @nm541 7 років тому

      Wøw! That'sAløtOfBandReferences it was probably bc people would better be able to figure out what Game of Thrones might be about as opposed to A Song of Ice and Fire which I feel could be about anything. Plus Game of Thrones is just easier to say
