Two men were in a cemetery, writing down names of the deceased to vote for their candidate. One of them found a stone with the name Stanislausian Vexorilianovich on it. "Forget it!" he said. "I'm not writing that long name down!" "You get writing right now!" scolded his partner. "This fellow has as much right to vote as anyone else!"
"We must have a wawwy!" "A 'wawwy?' What's a wawwy?" "You know, a wawwy. A warge gathewing of mice for a weason." "Oh! Ha. A 'rally!' " "That's what I said! A wawwy!" This will NEVER stop being funny.
@@echofoxtrot2.051 I agree that An American Tail is truly an underrated, yet timelessly endearing classic and I'm always glad to hear of others who have loved it from their youth. If I ever have children, I fully intend to have them grow up with it in the hope that they'll enjoy it as much is I did in my own childhood.
One can be a bad person and still be on the right side of history. These two are prime examples of that. Honest John is doing not so great things and Gussie wouldn't give a shit about the poor mice if the cats didn't also kill rich mice. She only teams up with the poor mice to save her own skin.
I never realized how lecherous "Honest" John was watching this as a kid. I love it when animators put in items that adults will get but kids don't always.
That's one of the reasons why you gotta love old school times when they show stuff like this in animation. Back in the day, they could get away with stuff like this. Back then, animators have a lot of freedom of what they want to show in these old school animated movie/shows. Cartoons these days are too sugar-coated.
"That's what I said! ...a wawwy!" LOL, I remember that from like 20yrs ago. Amazing that this movie's been out even longer than that! It's worth noting that its success was a smash breakthrough for feature-length animation--- and wouldn't be outdone until "The Little Mermaid", three years later. Some say this film is responsible for spurring the Disney summer blockbusters of the '90s. Also, its in-house successor "The Land Before Time" did extremely well as well.
Bat Spam101 I should have said Gilded Age New York City. This film highlights a lot of social problems that happened during this time. The struggles of immigrants trying to make a better life in America, the growing wealth gap, the rise in power of the robber barons, the exploitation of immigrants, poor people, workers and children from all those groups.
I remember when I was young, I really didn't understand what exactly was going on in this scene...all I knew was that mouse was dead. But I guess since I'm older now, I actually understand the stories (and jokes) of some the old animated movies I watched as a young child.
Madeline Kahn does excellent voice work here. She really adds some spark as Gussie Mausheimer. Gussie may have a snotty disposition (and a speech impediment), but she's extremely well-meaning and will stop at absolutely nothing to maintain the safety of all parts of the New York mouse community.
So many things in this scene I didn't catch as a kid. - Honest John's bright red nose meant he was an alcoholic - Ghost votes - Fourth wall break @ 1:23 - Why H.J. got his hand smacked (and G.M.'s subsequent eye roll and deep sigh)
I had the vhs when I was a kid, but it wore out so my mom was thrilled when I showed her we could get it online. We even laughed at the "wawwy" scene together like we hadn't laughed at it since my childhood.
1:34-1:49 Gussie Mausheimer is totally funny from that scene from "An American Tail" (November 21, 1986), telling Honest John to help her! •Gussie Mouseheimer: We must have a wawwy! •Honest John: A wawwy? In An American Tail, Warren T. Rat(Cat) smokes a cigar as well. That shows how after the 80's and 90's decades, cartoons got more kiddified, and wouldn't dare try to do something like what the 80's and 90's cartoons could get away with. It's crazy how An American Tail, All Dogs Go to Heaven and the Chipmunk Adventure would be rated R because of something like this. +Redstoner KBC All Dogs Go to Heaven can be easily found these days, heck, it's re-re;eased on Blu-Ray along with the sequel.
His name is actually taken from historical Tammany Hall political boss John Kelly of New York. Like his predecessor, WIlliam Tweed, Kelly engaged in corruption, ballot rigging, and was believed to have killed Mayor Havemeyer of New York who called him out for his dishonesty. The name "Honest John" was applied to him as irony by the police force

@@theguybehindyou4762 This was from 14 years ago, before the supposed "representation problem" was really a thing. This was my favourite movie when I was five or six, but there's a lot of stuff in here that went over my head. I don't think I understood that the politician mouse was drinking whiskey; I didn't catch that the whiskey was burning the floor - good subtle visual humour; I wouldn't have understood that Honest John was inspired by Boss Tweed. The historical context and the theme of the 19th immigrant experience meant absolutely nothing to me. I definitely didn't get the references to the Russian pogroms. For a five or six year old, this movie is about a talking mouse who teams up with a friendly cat to find his lost family. I liked the songs, I enjoyed the animation, but I really didn't fully appreciate it.
This is the scene where Fivel, Tony and Bridgette went to Honest John for help and that chick in the dress that I always forgot her name. And I liked the part where they built the giant mouse to scare off the cats, that was awesome 😎.
@CycloneRula I totally agree, in my opinion an American tail is better than the modern animated movies nowadays, I've always talk about that there needs to be more animated movies like an American tail with my family but my dad and my sister don't understand, they like new rubbish animated movies, what a cruel world.
“Ghost votes” is an underrated joke and it’s hilarious
More relevant than ever 😅
Yeah, Honest John, that’s a joke
Two men were in a cemetery, writing down names of the deceased to vote for their candidate.
One of them found a stone with the name Stanislausian Vexorilianovich on it. "Forget it!" he said. "I'm not writing that long name down!"
"You get writing right now!" scolded his partner. "This fellow has as much right to vote as anyone else!"
Despite her upper crust demeanor, she really pulls through in helping the mice deal with the cats in the end.
To bad we don't have any super wealthy people like her nowadays.
Not only that, but she helped Fievel get back to his family.
That's Madeline Kahn voicing her
Yes it’s very impressive
"We must have a wawwy!"
"A 'wawwy?' What's a wawwy?"
"You know, a wawwy. A warge gathewing of mice for a weason."
"Oh! Ha. A 'rally!' "
"That's what I said! A wawwy!"
This will NEVER stop being funny.
I'm nearly 30 and it makes me as happy as it did as when I was little! Love this movie!

R.I.P Madeline Kahn (The voice of Gussie). This is one of my favorite characters she ever played. An immense talent taken from us far too soon.
Gypsy the gypsy moth
Every time a rally is announced at church, I always think of “We must have a wawwy”
A wawwy? What's a wawwy?
Oh you mean a rally? That’s what I said lol
"I've dedicated my life to helping others less fortunate than myself....that's everyone..." hehe
real good one
Trump
Dio Brando: Don't they mean "WRRRRRRRRYYYYY"?
I don't get it
Still happens today
As a kid this means nothing except a really fun movie, now as an 18 year old it actually makes sense. :D And it's still a fun movie!
I live how fluid the animation looks
That's Don Bluth for ya.
I never realized until NOW as an adult that the mouse on the table was dead. Hot damn this movie was dark and depressing.....I LOVE IT!!
Me too
Riiiiiiiiight????
How could you not realize that mouse was dead? How can that be even more obvious?
If that mouse was killed by some cats, why isn't his body mutilated and his guts strewn everywhere? A more realistic fashion.
zirconviper Word of advice, do not take censorship too literally.
"A 'wowwy'? what's a 'wowwy'?" That Honest John cracks me up!
As a kid, it was REALLY difficult to tell if these two were actually the good guys or not.
In real life you sometimes need dishonest people to make good things happen.
One can be a bad person and still be on the right side of history. These two are prime examples of that. Honest John is doing not so great things and Gussie wouldn't give a shit about the poor mice if the cats didn't also kill rich mice. She only teams up with the poor mice to save her own skin.
I just realized that he was staring at her chest & reached to grab it xD I'm dying of laughter right now!

This film was a great satire of post-Civil War New York City.
Mr110074 what was post-Civil War New York City?
Bat Spam101 there was some sort of gang war in new york in the XIX century (go see the movie "gangs if New York")
Rafael Couto ok
Rafael Couto Gangs of New York was set during the Civil War specifically during the New York Draft riots if I remember right.

a politician mouse with the same name as that con-artist fox from Pinocchio
Joshua Orro gee... i wonder if the writers are trying to say something :)
Joshua Orro How fitting.
I. Know. Right? I'm. Pretty. Sure. He's. Just. Like. The. Fox. On. Pinocchio.
His name is based on corrupt New York boss of Tammany Hall, John Kelly
He's making a list of dead kids to make fraudulent votes for himself later so I'm pretty sure he's corrupt too.

Democrats

I didn’t know she dedicated her wife to help those wess fortunate her wife must be proud lol
@Molomar1 Even that movie can't compare to the awesomeness of an American tail, old school for the win.

fun fact: Madeline Kahn recycled the dialect she used for Lili von Schtupp as the voice of Gussie.

I honestly didn't know that, you're right that is a FUN fact, thanks for sharing.

Why can't kids movies today have decent storylines and characters such as this?
Because muh representation is all that matters now.

There's a thing I aways wondering about that scene.
How did they got the dead mouse out of the cat's stumach?
He was killed, not necessarily eaten.
***** Maybe you're right. But what lame cat would do that?
LarsEMou99 A cat whose mother never told them not to play with their food.
LOL
It's revealed that cat's are led by Warren t. who sends them to kill (not eat) mice in raids to keep them afraid and paying him for protection...
I just realized as an adult Madeline Kahn voiced Gussie Mouseheime. That is awesome.
"A 'wowee'? Whats a 'wowee'?"
Gets me everytime 😂
1:39
Don Bluth sure had some balls showing a young mouse's dead body, even if it's for the sake of dark comedy.
Happy St. Patrick's day, Honest John!
Gussie reminds me of a mouse version of Miss Choksondik from South Park with the same body structure, flobbies and figure and all that

Yeah, I wish today's kids would be raised well enough and be brave enough to mature faster mentally and psychologically like we did when we were kids.
This scene is cool
Never thought I'd see a Blazing Saddles reference in a kids movie. Gussy Van Maushiemer is basically Lilly Van Shtoop.
We must have a wawwy!!!!
Cloud Quarts A wawwy? What's a wawwy?
them be some very potent spirits there.
Amo esta película es de los 80s
Her saying "wawwy" is the only thing I remember from this movie.
Because all the producers care about is money, they'll produce any old rubbish and expect us to like it. I want more movies like An American tail!

Just wait until Biggus Dickus hears of this

So this means the mice aren't even being eaten. Just killed.

The irony that Honest John isn't. Amnd the hypocrisy of Gussy Mouseheimer.
It's very subtle.
Tony and Bridget are like big brother and sister to Fievel.
its some strong stuff honest john is drinking i mean its burning holes in the floor and by the way ( a wawwy ) its cracking me up every time

TheArtisticGirl1 I know she has a wisp...er, lisp haha
