Man. Mark Steel is always terrific, but this is an extraordinary piece of work-and I'm an American with no direct knowledge of the place. I was listening to this on the subway just now and it was all I could do not to cackle with laughter. Re: Stockport, I've never been there or anywhere near there, but we have traced a considerable chunk of my father's side of the family to what is now Greater Manchester, whence they left for America in (I think) the 1890s. We even think the surname might be attributable to the village of Ashton-Under-Lyne; it checks out geographically, if nothing else (though we have more information than that, just to be clear). Never been able to afford a non-Canadian international trip, but will be finally going to Europe soon and Britain is first on the list-maybe we'll have to check out Stockport and the delightful 192 when we're in Greater Manchester, just as a tip of the hat to the wonderful Mr. Steel.
Just listened to this again today,. Hilarious... & SO accurate!! A very belated reply from an Ashton 'cousin' , born & (still) living in Stocky! 🥴 🇬🇧 Did you ever make it here? 😊
Very nice of you to put these on You Tube
I just LOVE my hometown and our wonderful viaduct!! #Stockport
