  • Born in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, Dorothy Dandridge found early success in show business by performing with her sister, leading to her first appearances in film. Following her star turn in the 1954 musical Carmen Jones, she became the first African American to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award. Dandridge found it difficult to replicate that success, and her final years were marred by personal and professional problems, until her death at age 42 in 1965. #Biography

      Disagree, attractive, but not ‘beautiful’. A little like Jean Simmons, very attractive, but just that something missing to call her beautiful. Halle Berry is beautiful, as was Liz Taylor.

    I found out about Black Scarlets when I was in my late teens such as Dorthy D.
    There is so much that is hidden in History when it comes to Black people and its sad.....
    She was our Black Marilyn Monroe and she was Gorgeous...Talented, if not more so than Marilyn Monroe!
    I love Marilyn Monroe too not to ever put her down but Whites and Blacks worship her because thats the way that the Media wanted it to be and its SHAMEFUL.....

    She was gorgeous! She accomplished a lot to have been a great Hollywood actress in those days. It was uncommon for blacks to have major roles or to even last in acting. It was quite limited. Most blacks back then made it in the ent business as singers or dancers. She did great things indeed. RIP Dorothy! A true DIVA!

    Dorothy was not the most beautiful black woman in the world. Dorothy Dandridge was the most beautiful woman in the world...period!
    If you rub off the makeup of 90 percent of these woman that people put on these so called beauty list, their entire features and color would disappear.
    Dorothy was beautiful without a stitch of make up...........and that's what beauty is!

      She was beautiful but statements that she was the moat beautiful woman in the World..are not rational...there are numero beautiful woman in our world
      Not famous..she was special and one of distinction ..she was treated different as she was light skinned in that time period..she may have had mixed lineage..
      Special and unique as we all are. But not the most beautiful..
      Sad about the end of her life and her child and choice in men..she could not find real love..beauty is within as physical beauty will fade

    Dorothy Dandridge---the most beautiful woman in the world...What a doll!!! The photo @ 1:31 has always been one of my favorites. No one will ever touch her in class, beauty, talent, or glamour. Dorothy should never have had to put her daughter, Harolyn in a state institution, because her father Harold Nicholas was very rich and famous and could have easily seen to his daughter's care and provided for her. That's what parents who love their children do. DD is timeless!!!!!

    What a lovely actress and singer she was. We have countless examples to show that fame and fortune do not bring happiness. Many if not most celebrities end up having nervous breakdowns,becoming drug addicts (either recreation or medical drugs), suffer emotional/mental instability,etc These entertainers do entertain but apparently at a great cost to their own personal happiness.

    Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge, is there a curse on pretty women?

    • @ballafasho332
      @ballafasho332 8 років тому +15

      Yes, classic gift and curse. They're beautiful to the point they are constantly approached by men whom offer shallow means to wanting to know them. All they want from them is their bodies and status from being with them. They are used so much. Plus big time directors make them play for those leading roles. That must feel awful to be taken advantage of like that your whole career in the dirty business of show biz. Once it all hits them and they reflect, they can't take it so it seems. Sad deal

      Elizbeth Curtsinger Hi yes there is a curse on being “pretty” especially if you have a fair shade of skin. Just like there’s a gift and a curse on a lot of things in life, it’s sad and tragic but have to be endured until you die. Unless you stand up and revolt and make a change..... but who’s going to do that nowadays everyone is shallow and weak!!!!! 💯

    @MsCardigan1 That is a very good question. I know Harolyn is still alive but it has never been established that the whole family really stuck by her. I hope Harold did. Dorothy was faithful and kind. It's always been pretty much a mystery....seldom, if ever talked about. The Ebony/Jet seemed to write about her now and then ...that's about it. Let's hope we can find out more because I have wondered as well. Peace.

    When it was 1999, I was only 9 years old. Do I care about Halle Berry about that time? Heck no. I care about Spongebob Squarepants and Dragon Ball and Pokemon. I only knew Dorothy Dandridge recently, but I already like her nonetheless. So please don't judge us "young ppl". Just because we know Dorothy from a source you don't like, it doesn't mean we appreciate her any less than you do.

  • @ccaammiinniiito2
    @ccaammiinniiito2 11 років тому +6

    It has always fascinated me that Dandridge and Horne both were beautiful and exciting in completely different ways, Horne the sultry aristocrat and Dandridge the pin-up girl. The enteraintment world cannot fully account for Dandridge's misfortunes, however, since on reading her bio one's attention is drawn to serious challenges early in life. My take on her career is that Hollywood didn't give her the right material. "Carmen...," for example, just didn't do it for me. Lip sync! Nah!!

    @MsCardigan1 When I wrote that I knew that I left out that over the years, particularly in the past, Ebony/Jet would write little things about her. I'm sorry...had to clean that up lol. Those magazines were the mediums to find out things like that. Yes, I knew that Harold was displeased as many people are when things don't go as they want them which is a horrible way to be. I believe that a lot of neediness that Dorothy developed came from her childhood. She was so gorgeous and nice. Peace!

    I just watched Carmen Jones. The original one with Harry Belafonte in it. Anyways that what brought me here. She was amazing in that movie. I was a bit upset at how Carmen did Joe. Pearl Bailey was perfect in the movie as well. I knew who Dorothy was and that is what brought me to Carmen Jones. I was never really interested in the new one with Beyonce'. Also look up Eartha Kitt and Lena Horne for more black beauties of this era. Listen to them sing in their youth and witness greatness!

    THANK YOU obviously they saw Keri Hilson portraying Ms.Dandridge in her "Pretty Girl Rock" video it piqued their interest and they decided to come find out who she is and educate themselves Most young people could care less if it aint Rihanna or Nicki Minaj And in their defense most Keri Hilson fans are 90s babies who are now 15,16,17. Ms. Dandridge far predates them At least theyre here and care to know who she is Relax, its a positive thing that Keri brought them here not a negative thing wtf
