Flying the Rolls Royce B747 Test Bed - An Experimental Flight with 100% SAF

- I travelled to Tucson, Arizona to visit the Rolls Royce Boeing 747 Flying Test Bed (FTB). This special modified B747-200 classic is mounted with three RB211’s and one Trent 1000 engine. For the first time, Rolls Royce is using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to power their Trent 1000 engine as an experimental flight.
Before the flight, I was given a quick tour of the B747 Flying Test Bed. I met with the Rolls Royce engineering team and pilots onboard, they explained to me the test procedure on the Trent 1000 engine during flight. It will perform acceleration, deceleration and re-ignition during the 4-hour flight.
After takeoff, I spoke with an expert on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and its current challenges and limitations. After 4 hours, the B747 safely landed back in Tuscon where I met up with the crew again. Can aviation go green? Let's find out!

I'm not going to lie. I'd be exceptionally nervous if I boarded a plane and saw that the combined age between the pilot and co-pilot was 150 years old...! :)
Chuck Yeager once said that the fighter pilot with the most experience would always win the dog fight in comparable fighters.
Those guys nailed the landing which demonstrated their decades of flying experience. It's great to see guys their age still being valued and in demand. I'd also wager that their physicals for the commercial pilot licenses are rather extensive too.

Not necessarily. Look at Aeroflot Flight 593 - the airline's most experienced pilot was put in charge of their newest and most modern airliner but failed to read the manual. Simulator flights in the aftermath revealed that had the pilot let go of the controls, autopilot would have corrected the abnormality.
With planes becoming more and more complex, older and more experienced doesn't always mean 'better'.
That plane is an old 747-200.

Usually most of the 747-200s are in boneyards, completely scrapped. It's good to see that Rolls Royce has given some important to this aircraft. Hope that the company retains this plane for years to come. Great work Sam on this great capture and the video ! :D
I thought that was the 747sp.
@@Angry.General1461 The 747sp has a shorter fuselage, and larger rudders, elevators and wings. The -200 series are longer tho...
They recently bought a ex Qantas 747-400 will be replacing this -200
@@Angry.General1461 It's a Boeing 747-267B. This particular aircraft has had three owners with Rolls Royce North America being the third. This aircraft was originally built for Cathay-Pacific

It's nonsense. Just because the fuel is different, just think about all the materials it takes to build a plane. Not green.
Same for Tesla. The amount of fossil fuel it takes to make a electric car and battery pack is more energy than petrol car. And to charge the electric car requires major fossil fuel power grid. The whole green/sustainable stuff is all a joke.
cool seeing a 41 year old 74-200. I was a freshman in high school when this plane enter service with cathay pacific in April 1980. RR North America has had the plane since 2005
Aviation continues to do amazing pioneering work!! Being a nose ahead is so decisive. Really nice to see that throttle handling on approach. He is compensating the idle thrust from engine 2 by further advancing the throttle for engine 1, all while leaving engine 3 and 4 where they should be. I think that is more difficult than it might seem at first. Especially if you consider the yaw moment as a result of the asymmetrical thrust whenever you advance or decrease a throttle lever. What a legend!
I love how the plane is using entirely original instruments. From the 6 pack to the ADF and the VOR. Amazing.
Very interesting the growth of sustainable fuel, also Easyjet is investing a lot on it, they are making some flights out of London Gatwick wth biofuel :)
easyjet is like ryanair, its for cattle people who like to be treated like cattle
Unfortunately, biofuel is kind of a scam. The most biofuels out there are energy negative, which means they need more energy to be produced than the energy they provide. It's a pity, because most people don't know that. The companies keep making them, because they can grab lucrative subsidies. There are various better synthetic alternatives out there. Real Engineering has some very good videos about it, I highly recommend his channel.

cheap to buy, redundancy if you lose the engine you are testing. Good choice for a testbed
@@Hans-gb4mv only issue is they’re expensive to maintain, and most are probably getting close to their flight cycle ‘limits’ (I forget what the proper term for it is but you get what I mean)
@@damonlang1185 cycles is not too big of a problem for a testbed. Those frames don't make 5000 hrs/year nor hundreds of cycles. And of course engine manufacterers are cherry picking when they buy a "new" testbed since they will spend a lot of money to set it up for testing. Furthermore these testbeds operate on special or modified type certification I guess. Safety will always be valued, but it's just different then commercially operated frames transporting passengers all over the world.

Amazing what can be done when corporations take the environment seriously, innovate and apply their science for the greater good and future generations!!!
Yet an other great job by Sam. I'm so fortunate to have flown in a PAN AM 200 back in the mid 70s from UK to Italy. It was on a business trip so I got to go up the spiral stairs and fly on the upper deck. After that flight, I promised my self never to fly down stairs ever again if on a 747, and did so until 2004 when I semi retired from the bicycle industry. Again good work Sam.

According to both Plane Spotters and Airfleets, N787RR has never operated for QANTAS. She started with Cathay Pacific and then went on to Air Icelandic before RR
Thanks for that research. I felt it was a BA, CP or QANTAS Classic, based on the iconic RB-211s. A bit of confusion for me re livery and ‘Spirit of Excellence’-thought it could have been adapted from ‘Spirit of Australia’. Also have heard that Rolls Royce may have recently purchased one of QANTAS’s superb, still young 747-438ERs for engineering test bed use…

Spiral staircases, lots of memories there ....movie Projectors, .... one engine on fire....( you can still fly); ...safety drill sliding from Upper deck, very high and have to jump in the water from upperdeck as well...reminded me of B747 - 200 those days...
and pure garbage rubber air tube headphones for the low resolution in-flight movie. It was still the safest, best engineered, most system redundancy plane in the sky.

I worked at Tucson international for many years as a member of the Air National Guard unit there. That Rolls Royce 747 has been there conducting tests for at least 10 years. In my job I was able to move around the airport property and was able to get a close look at that 747-200. One day I was having lunch at a restaurant near the airport called Jerry-Bobs and I met the pilot that you interviewed. We had a short but interesting conversation.
Rolls Royce North America took ownership of this aircraft June 17, 2005.
Worked a ground crew job at T.I.A. FOR A FEW MONTHS AFTER RETIREING FROM A CAREER IN THE FIRE SERVICE AND SAW THIS EVERYDAY.
I go to the university arizona right now, i just randomly clicked on this vid and as soon and i saw the intelligence sticker i was like holy shit this was filmed in tucson. That plane just sits there all day

Great to see the greener initiatives, Sustainable living not only required for aviation but also in all fields as we could see couple of days ago the temperature in Antartica has raised 38 degree although its winter there.

I think that's pretty cool that this 747 still has the flight engineer station intact along with NO upgraded glass equipment. That Trent 1000 engine is pretty big compared to the other 3 engines as well. Very neat video!

I live in Tucson and I'm suprised that I was actually there to see that plane take-off, I was wondering why one of the engines where different but here's my answer. It truly is a beautiful plane in-person.
