- www.patreon.com/vbbsmyt .The Hotchkiss Model 1914, firing the 8mm Lebel cartridge was the main heavy machine gun used by the French during WW1. The American Expeditionary Force also used the Hotchkiss. Firing rate was over 450 rounds per minute,. Ammunition was supplied on strips of 24 cartridges, or on articulated metal belt of 249 rounds. The gun was air cooled and the heavy barrel was made with fins to increase the cooling surface area.

Fantastic animation as usual. Just watched this with my 6 year old, he was fascinated by this this gun works.
American kid
My grandfather would have been very familiar with this machine gun. He operated one during WW1 as a member of the AEF sent to France in 1917.
I was so surprised of how incrediblly simpl the hotchkiss was,it looked like such a complicated firearm but actually it was pretty reasonably simplly and during the time of the first world war (not this model) but it would still be extraordinarily easy to feild strip if and issue would arise
It's funny how the mechanism that indexes a wheel to index the belt or feed strip is related to the mechanism for clicking ballpoint pens. Note: not the ones with the button on the side of the pen.
after seeing your comment i hasty disassemble my ballpoint pen

I realy love youre videos, they are so so well made
Very ingenious locking mechanism.
Not too far off from Browning's BAR locking system and the FN MAG that used a flipped variation.
Outstanding work Rob, thank you for sharing your passion with us.
Thank you for another excellent animation.
I never realized how open the gas operating system was, or that there was a " belt " mode for the ammunition.
It was more like a belt made of 3-cartridge metal strips connected with each other.
Not an ammunition belt like he fabric one for the, say, Vickers MkI or, even less so, the Browning 1919 with its belt made of detachable metal links.
As always I greatly appreciate the work you do.
What an elegant, effective, simple action. Especially like the way it handles an out of battery situation where the firing pin can not be struck until locked. French firearms are some of my favorite even with their 'quirks'... Always built robust to a fault, reliable, accurate and made with great care and craftsmanship. My pre-WWII MAS 36 and 49/56 both in the orig 7.5x54 caliber are spectacular examples of this. Great work here vbb.
Iirc, the 1914 Hotchkiss had to have lubed cases. There was a felt pad on the feed mechanism that would oil the case just before firing and if the case was dirty it would jam the gun. I might be thinking of another gun but I have seen the Hotchkiss jam for that very reason before.
Were you thinking of the Schwarzlose, which lubricates each round as it is loaded? ua-cam.com/video/Fwhr4je3Smk/v-deo.html
@@vbbsmyt You are correct, thank you
The Japanese version of this gun had an oiler.
Good animation as always and good fitting music :-)
Lovely work, didn't know they used linked metal belts as well. :-)
French Machine guns are so piston-focussed and compact, facinating
You're right about the heavy machine guns, but French LMGs display considerably more variety. The FM Mle 1915 Chauchat is a long recoil weapon. Its replacement, the FM Mle 24/29, is gas operated. However, the designers of the AA-52 design went with lever-delayed blowback. I suspect (though I haven't seen any confirmation for this anywhere, so please take this with a grain of salt) the latter may have been inspired by roller-delayed blowback systems championed by German designers at the tail end of WW2, some of whom ended up working for the French (see CEAM Mle 1950).
@@FireflyActual ....and the americans (M-60)
yeah, it was more a comment about their overall appearance than their operating system, Chauchat is also a weapon with a "Piston" like appearance.
excellent
Beautiful work 🤩
Thanks a lot 🤗
So I've discovered that after WWI, the French adapted this mechanism to a light machine gun, the m1922 hotchkiss. I definitely think this was a good idea because this mechanism seems better than the hotchkiss portative. However, it was beaten by the FM 24/29 lmg for the French military. It was produced in a version with a feed strip, and another using top mounted box magazines. It was produced in 8mm lebel and the newer 7.5 French cartridges, but it was exported to many other countries in many other calibers.
The FM MAC 24/29 was only built in 7.5mm x 54mm 1929C: this excellent machine gun was in use in France up to the 80'...
I don't know who did this but this kicks ass!
Outstanding. Really! Thank you for sharing.
Really really good watch! Thank you.
Just by looking at the Operating Mechanism....
Well, I know the Hotchkiss 1914 is a Gas-Actuated Machine Gun, but the Design I could find most Familiar to Today's Gas-Operated Automatic Weapons, is the Long-Stroke Type, similar to what you'd find on an AK-47.
I think back then they never had an Actual Classification, so at the time, it wasn't Classified as a Long-Stroke.
Then again, I dunno if it has to do with the Exposed Gas Chamber or something....
Actually I just realized something....
Since the Gas Chamber is Exposed, wouldn't this be a Short-Stroke instead?
Very simple and reliable.
Amazing simulation!
Awesome!
you NEED to do a g11, reference could be taken from forgotten weapons' recent video. If you wanted to, of course. Love the videos

Yey, one of my favourite machine guns.
Any ideas for a future project?
Thanks bro
didn't know they had a belt-feed system to that.
it wasn't as common as the strips because of the bulk, they were more common for guns used in anti aircraft duties
also, strips were easier to handle once empty or if you had to unload the gun, as the belt link are fixed together, so if you were halfway through the belt and had to unload, you had to pull back all the empty links through the gun
also, the belts were first designed to feed the gun in tanks, where a big feed strip hanging off the side would have limited the gun arc of fire from inside
Could you make type 92 HMG and type 11 LMG of Japanese ww2 ?
그렇습니다! ok.
And what is interesting in the clones of the English "Vickers"?
@@donjuliogonzalez-fraustoes159
That none are clones of the Maxim, the closest to an actual clone is the Soviet Maxim-Tokarev but even those have some differences.
And the Type 92 and Type 11 are completely different guns, the 92 is based on the Hotchkiss Mle. 1914 while the Type 11 is an original design that uses tripper clips for feeding, even Japan's first mass use HMG/MMG wasn't a Maxim (Type 3 Taisho).

now explains how the .50 caliber Browning machine gun works
I need 10 boxes of those to buy ok
I think I know what the bastard smg from metro got inspiration from
WTF I didn't know they accepted belt munition.
not realy: the only belts" use was rigid plates because the 1886 Lebel ammunition was very conic (specific design for the lebel tube magazine) and doest allow a fabric belt (jaming risks)...
Video syper !
Is the machine gun used for the french army in the World War I and others wars.
Could you do a ww2 and mg0815 machine guns pls
I did not understand how the bullet rises into the barrel, it is also lower in level (((
Is it possible to get that model somewhere?
3:30 and out comes the Nintendo DS stylus lol
So this concept could be modified slightly so it can take belts instead of strips.
Do you have plans to make a CZ 45 pistol?
Отлично.
I never realized the French made the 'primerless cartridge', let alone during the great war. It probably didn't catch on because it was so hard to keep to water out & the powder in the case. (Can I remove my tongue from my cheek now? It's not very comfortable and makes it difficult to eat.)
독특하다!
So how would you call this type of locking mechanism?
I think I'd call it a locking block mechanism because the bolt has a separate block that moves into cutouts in the receiver
Do you use Solidworks to create the models?
No, I use Cinema 4D. Rob
Gunny hated this gun tho ;-; mainly coz if it's wired ammunition magazines or belt idk wth you call that ;-;
So it auto ejects?
What do you mean by auto eject? Theres a wide V shaped ejector fixed to a pivot point in the left side of the receiver. When the bolt retracts, it hits one side of the ejector, causing the other side to hit the cartridge case out.
The ejector at the side of the bolt kicks in at about 1:42
@@SpruceReduce8854 eject the belts
@@neptune3569 Oh, I understand now. It's probably just that since the mechanism is harnessing the power of an intense combustion, theres enough energy that the feed strip can just be pushed out normally by the feed wheel.

Will you be making a video on Enfield M1917 soon?
As in the bolt action rifle? It's pretty much the same as a Mauser 98, except for being cock on close instead of cock on open.
Check out C&Rsenal video on the Pattern 14, they have a cutaway animation at about 22:51

Make an animation how the tank mk4 works
??
it will be cool but i doubt, in his video he said he tries to do the animations with all details looking into technical papers and etc. A tank is basically a mash of all kinds of systems together. guns are more simple ofc
@wood1155 it's a terrible idea.
Another example of bad French design.
An air cooled gas operated direct feed belt machine gun?
Ironically, this machinegun was well-reputed during the war.
