Coaches are also mentors. I guarantee that's not his recruiting practices to say the school comes first. My coach promised I would start as a freshmen, and I did. That being said. How many coaches make promises and then break them. I was lucky, but on my college team I saw my coach do exactly this. I had a great experience and later played pro here and overseas. I then later coached D2 and made it about the players and have great relationships to this day. Does a recruiter of college make it about the school, it's about the kid and the benefits of going to that college. That';s what parents want to here. Not that the school come first. If his recruit tactic is about the school, he'll be out of a JOB. College success is about recruiting not the school. Whats best for duke is to have a great recruiter, because the parents of the kids in high school are smarter and watching everything these colleges do.
Here’s the issue with this conversation. Coach K is paid and his job is to win basketball games, not to worry about their players draft stock. Zion in the lineup gives them the best chance to win, so NO Coach K should not sit him. Now if the conversation is should Zion sit himself out, that answer is YES.
Another perspective here... Recruiting is important. If coach k plays this kid even though his health isn't 100%..(if that's the case).. then it seems like he isn't looking out for that kids best interests. That's not a good look for future recruits. That's a concern as well. Now if his health is back to normal then I see no issue playing him, IF he agrees and wants to play.
Then again, I think he got a scholarship and him not playing if he is completely healthy... Well this situation is a difficult one for everybody. Which is why the rules need changing. But ya know. Lol
Justin obviously if he’s not healthy you don’t play him. The question here isn’t talking about if he’s not healthy, it’s talking about if he can play, should Coach K sit him. The answer is no. Like I said Coach K’s job is to win basketball games, not protect a players draft stock. The responsibility lies on the player whether to sit out or not, not the coach
@@bwcjak23 I agree except for his health not being a question. I think that "healthy" is judgement. Sure he can heal in a month to 6 weeks.. but will he be 100%? I'm just saying, if it looks like a judgement call then that's not worth playing him. Another thing to consider.. let's say he is 100% and shows no signs of strain on his body.. then K plays him and he gets hurt.. especially if it's the same leg.. now everyone is questioning his health to begin with and the staff at Duke. I see it as lose the battle win the war. If there is any question of his health, and honestly even if there isn't, let the man sit. Recruits will see that and it will help moving forward. Also mitigates risk to the future of the organization. Just my opinion. Winning now is not more important than winning with those recruits in the future.
Justin health is not a judgement call, he has a minor knee sprain and there are plenty of tests and procedures they can do to ensure that the knee is back to 100% healthy If he is 100% healthy and plays and gets hurt again, then his health obviously is a question mark, so that seems warranted. Also, injuries happen in sports, it’s just a fact, now you can look at an outlier (like Zion straining a knee because his shoe ripped apart) and completely overreact, or you can look at the his history as a whole and say it’s probably more of a freak accident then what would be a reoccurring issue. You’re talking about a kid who hasn’t had any kind of nagging injury at all this year Lastly, you gain nothing from sitting him if he’s healthy, Duke is already the premier school as far as recruiting and bringing in top players, it’s not like they’re going to gain more recruits from sitting him. In the same way 1 injury isn’t going to dissuade players from going to the top school, with the best coach who has tons of nba ties. KacyJ they actually don't have to sign a letter of intent but the only people that can get away without it is people who are elite recruits. The letter of intent mostly is just them selling their likeness and reserving them a spot on the team.

Zion traveled with the team to Syracuse and is on the sidelines cheering on Duke. This does not look like he’s going to sit out when he is back to 100%.
if the ncaa can't figure out how to pay the kids, they should allow them to make their own money. Zion Williams should be able to wear whatever sneaker he wants. if duke is a nike school and a player like zion gets a big bag of money from adidas to wear the hardens then it should be allowed by the NCAA
I generally agree that players should have the choice to go pro if they choose. The NBA is the only viable league for most of these guys, so they are essentially “forced” to go to college. However, if they don’t want to play and get injured, don’t even attend college. It’d be a farce if these players are sitting out games just for the fear of getting injured.
Easiest solve is to allow ALL athletes to become pro right out of high school. These age restrictions effectively force players to choose college. If that wasn’t in place I think the argument for paying players would go out the window because they’d have opportunity to make money elsewhere
To be fair this is no way Coach K can sit down Zion for the season. Coach K's responsibility is to duke not to any one player. Zion has to make the decision for himself depending on how he feels. I think Zion should sit the season if he is not 100% if he is 95% he should not play
The only reason for him to sit out is if he's academically ineligible. It's funny how these same networks have contracts with these schools but then want to say players should be paid. They're trying to play both sides
I just want to speak on Cutting Mobley and his insensitive remarks today about some rent that was paid by Ocho Cinco. Mobley felt the guys rent was a joke, as if he couldn't understand how he couldn't afford it. Get rid of this clown ASAP!
For those of you that think Zion would have gone to college even if he didnt have to don't realize that he is giving the PC answer. If that's true then play a couple of years in college. I bet he won't though.
At what point does an elite college athlete shut it down? Injuries are part of competing. Should Zion have sat out his senior year of HS? Shut it down his sophomore year? Middle school? The NCAA system will remain until enough athletes opt out and choose an alternate path. People like Whitlock and JJ complaining about the system using players... fail to acknowledge the terms and rules are clearly defined when guys sign with a college. Don't sign if you don't like the contract.
Whitlock says that a coach should set his team up to lose and fail for the benefit of ONE player. For a guy who cries about people behaving pampered and super star status he sure likes to blame the coaches for problems that's not under their control.
On the issue of whether or not players should be paid - even though I don’t think most kids can handle suddenly have millions of dollars as a teen, we don’t force a kid in a IT degree program to not work. If a kid develops a great product before getting their college degree, we don’t refuse to let them make money. So what I would do is allow athletes to make money off themselves if they can. Allow them to be sponsored if they can get one. Does it introduce an “unfairness”? Sure. But we all agree that an IVY league degree is favored over many other school, so we already have inequality in degrees. So we already live in that world.
Meanwhile the executives are hoping this conversation keeps going on to overshadow a athletic shoe blowout catastrophe. Zion might get a shoe deal(advance) contract before he gets out of college
So what they’re saying is Zion should just skip college basketball and any other top prospects.. why weren’t they saying this two weeks ago? Yeah Zion got hurt but he’s gonna be healthy in two weeks, just like he was last week when this wasn’t even a discussion
Maybe Whitlock needs to check his facts. John Calipari has spoke multiple times about the NCAA paying players or allowing them to make money from their likeness.
Everything it seems regarding pro sports especially the NBA and NFL is about money. Very few players it seems play for the love of the game. I think Zion will continue to play in college bc his past comments seem to pursue the flat out of the love of the game. Zion is going to make hundreds of millions of dollars via the sport and endorsements. It is totally up to the player himself in regards to what his future is. I as a fan hope Zion plays the remainder of the season which includes the ACC tournament and the field of 64 (68).
So he turned downed 125,000 from KU and takes Dukes money and now he just gonna sit out?......ok.....I think he should too.....but if you have any integrity then you prorate that money out and pay that “bag man “ back
North Carolina takes care of their Athletes, and Coach K does care for his kids, but Coach K, is paid by Duke, if he is healthy he has to play, Zoin agreed to come to Duke, knowing the situation. I think, colleges shouldn't have to pay students, cause that extra revenue is what pays for numerous scholarships in all facets in the University occur. But The NBA has to allow, straight to NBA route like Kobe KG of Rashard Lewis, for players that want to make or earn a living. Colleges, will have to allow, companies to pay slash sponsor kids, Zoin should have his own shoe deal, he should probably have state farm and papa john commercials as well. Due to Zoin, in a statefarm commercials reddish and barrett would get this money as well, similar to harden and cp. Kids that can use the platform to get earnings should not be restricted at all. It would solve all the problems.
If Zion is healthy and wants to play why would coach K sit him? in that scenario then he should sit RJ and Cam then in the best interest of their careers
I think Zion is a great ball player and is going to the NBA. Lets just wrap him in bubble wrap and not let him walk because he might tear something. Lets not feed him because him might get food poisoning. Lets take the top 32 NCAA players and sit them too, they can play PlayStation to get ready for the NBA. This is crazy and bad things happen to good people. Let the young man live life and enjoy his time at Duke. Speedy recovery Zion. Coach K's job is to field the best team for Duke and win. I think the players should be paid and the monies should come from a percentage of revenue the teams generate. Also, fellas you all realize that if players like Zion don't play you guy will have nothing to talk about and ESPN won't need you, be careful what you wish for.
I agree college football, baseball and, basketball players should get some sort of compensation. Now, would that be only for super stars? Or, every player should be paid equally? I much rather have college sports programs pay for player insurance!
why would you sue nike? Its better to leverage the incident and make them offer you a life time contract like lebron has or for them to give you stock in the company. And if they dont, then start a shoe war, go to media outlets and start saying you dont trust the nike brand and that they arent safe or a reliable product and start using other brands until one of them give you a lion's share that'll take care of you and your family for a long time. There are way better plans of attack, suing is for people who want to make a quick buck
Nike May get sued but they won’t lose the suit 😂😂😂 why everyone acting like this is the first time this has happened?? Manu literally had the exact same thing happen.
Corrupt system? Lol...ridiculous. NO, they should "not" be paid. Are you paying every player in every NCAA (all divisions)? Now they are employees and not students? Now, if the discussion is can an endorser pay them, that's not an issue, BUT schools cannot pay students nor should they...Where we place value in our culture is already distorted. Do you pay the science/match students? What about those studying architecture, medicine, etc? There are lost of people "making" corporations/businesses billions of dollars that are not in-turn made millionaires.
This is so stupid. Why is the media trying to tell people what to do either way. Let the guy make his own decision. Why is this even a topic of discussion?
If you don't like the rules and regulations in the NBA or NCAA then start your own league. These professional athletes together are worth billions of dollars, they're most responsible for "the future" stars like Zion.

The fact that the NCAA is preventing these kids from getting what the free market has in store for them is ridiculous and as anti capitalist as others have pointed out. The NCAA is a wage fixing cartel.
alansjf33 they don’t “have” to he could sit out
Sly Fox they are made to play for the NCAA or play over seas. Zion made a horrible choice going to Duke.
alansjf33 were does it state that in the rules? Gelo didn’t finish his first year and still tried out. What are you talking about? It says you must be 19. Not that you have to go to college or overseas
Sly Fox come on. You know what the stupid rule is designed to do. It is designed to funnel players to theNCAA for a year. You know that. We all do. Most players just can’t sit out organized and ball for a year.
Best point of all
NCAA make a killing off this youngman
For many the NCAA is the only reason they get to the pros. Michael Jordan wasn’t exploited by the NCAA. He wasn’t a highly scouted high school player. He might never made it to the NBA if wasn’t for the college game.
Right, BUNCH OF CROOKED CROOKS! PAY THE PLAYERS IN COLLEGE!
Whitlock with the smirk on face and turn of the head reminded me of Lou Costello. 'Marcellus im a bad boy and im hungry'..Marcellus reminded me of Bud Abbott..'Hey Whitlock dont get smart'
Let’s not forget the fact that this boy blew that shoe up like professor Klump 😂😂
LOOK MAAAN!!! nobody's blaming coach K!! if i was ZION-i would say...if someone dont GIVE ME 500MIL, IM SHUTTING IT DOWN!!! NOW!!! because GOD whispers b4 he yells! 😆. This is a sign.
Tbh if this was someone else that got injured and shoe broke no one wouldn't gaf. But I hope zion gets a quick recovery 🙏🏽
Demetrius Hall first and foremost! Good comment
The dude is going No. 1 regardless.
rotoninja forreal they act like this is football.
Not if he permanently blows out his knees. IJS though
Aaron A. Dubz Person name an college player at the age of 18 who “permanently” blew out their knee. Go ahead I’ll wait.
Aaron A. Dubz Person n if we’re worried about that Zion should never get in a car. Don’t want him getting in a car accident. It’s more likely he’ll get in a car accident the “permanently” blowing out his knees
Aaron A. Dubz Person basketball is a safe sport y’all need to stop acting like it’s dangerous
Who are the 5 greatest ballers in the world???
1.) Zion
2.) Zion
.....
ya feel me?
im richhh beeeeeeiiiiitchhhh
Olden Polyniece+Scott skiles =Zion Williamson
stop bringing Dahtay Jones on the show
They gotta have at least 1 Lebron shill on the panel
Please he is hard to listen to
Lol he going to read these comments and y'all going through hurt his feelings
Coach K should absolutely play him. It's his job. Zion should decide not to play IMO or play if he chooses! It's his Career and Life. This is a Dumb debate and insincere debate.
And SIDE NOTE: Dahntay Jones is a trash Lebron Puppet. Just felt like mentioning that.
No, But If He Comes Back In the Acc Tournament. Give a Chance to see how good Everyone else on Duke is.
I hate how the media just sleeping on RJ Barrett
Last Night Line: 33pts 13 rebs 11/22(50%) from the field
Empty stats
Aint nobody sleeping on RJ.... He's a consensus number 1 or 2 pick. By the way how did the team do last night, it was his perfect time to shine??? 🤔
R.J. is just another Rodney Hood...that ain’t good
@@Oldskool_D and u think Zion is better in today's NBA where even the centers shoot 3's idk why people hype about him he can't shoot I would not take him number one he won't change ur franchise but aye maybe I'm wrong
lucious Lee he make threes
You guys are insane! What's the purpose of recruiting athletes like Zion Williamson? Now, U are saying he should not play one more minute for Duke. This is absurd, complete nonsense! I guess these players better go straight to the NBA from high school without setting foot in any college team! We would be much better off! I can't help but to remember the dismal waste of time, Ben Simmonds's one year tour in Baton Rouge was for the LSU basketball program!
ivan salazar yes. They shouldn’t have to go to college at all if they don’t want to study. The system is flawed. They should be allowed to get individual player endorsements at that level just like they do in the Olympics.
True and when they said you get an education Ben Simmons said he didn't go to class 2nd semester so I don't really see how they use it as a valid argument
How about in their letter of intent they must sign for how many years... That way all the "one and dones" can be eliminated. Plus they don't HAVE to go to college...they choose
KacyJ they actually don't have to sign a letter of intent but the only people that can get away without it is people who are elite recruits. The letter of intent mostly is just them selling their likeness and reserving them a spot on the team.
@@joshg1529 I see what you are saying but there could be an additional contract that states your intentions and the tenure you are staying. College basketball game dont like one and dones because it defeats the purpose of going to college in the first place
Zion is 18, it’s not his Parents decision
Sports Sidelined he’s still a kid. He should listen to the advice of his parents.
edentaylor211 Well in America you are deemed an adult at the age of 18 years old
Wesley Pipes but it’s WISE to listen to your parents especially since they’ve done a great job raising him thus far.
Once again Jason Whitlocks ignorance never cease to amaze me
Tyler Hall Whitlock isn't being ignorant this time.
Rick Patino refused to play Derek Anderson in 1997 after his injury. It costed him a Back-to-Back championship at Kentucky.
He should not sit down you can get her at any time he can get her at any time Even before he signed a contract Where he working out for a team yeah all do not care about his career y’all just want to see him in the NBA just like people want to see him in college Things happen so when they do you just say quit So everyone and is going to be the number one pick just quit playing college basketball in the middle of the season
Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier have both stated players should be paid some sort of compensation
Zion gotta a passion to play with this group he sees the potential
I know when a person is high when I see one. Jim Jackson is high as a kite on all of his appearances. His eyes are almost closed half the time. Brushes his teeth and uses eye drops before going on set.
Is there full episodes of this show I can watch?
Zion traveled with the team to Syracuse and is on the sidelines cheering on Duke. This does not look like he’s going to sit out when he is back to 100%.
Zion used Duke to get national recognition. No one heard of Zion until media covered Duke and made him famous.
When Paul George broke his leg KD called coach k & said "Im Done"
this show has gotten so much better since Wiley came Whitlock really stepped his game up with more TV time
if the ncaa can't figure out how to pay the kids, they should allow them to make their own money. Zion Williams should be able to wear whatever sneaker he wants. if duke is a nike school and a player like zion gets a big bag of money from adidas to wear the hardens then it should be allowed by the NCAA
The funny thing is that Zion hasn’t said a word about any of this😂only then speculating
Zion should sit out. We already know what he can do, no need to risk anything now.
Zion can really take this time to excel in school. And get A's in class. He doesn't need basketball and still be productive in tha classroom
Very much depends what this injury is, and whether this exposes him to further serious injury. If so, sit out.
So far I am day to day ...hopefully I will return for the Syracuse game on Saturday
Sit it out bro plz
Zion loves the game hes coming back...kyrie broke his leg in 5 games in college and still went number one..
For those of you that think Zion would have gone to college even if he didnt have to don't realize that he is giving the PC answer. If that's true then play a couple of years in college. I bet he won't though.
Somebody just ask a different question then please 😂
Let see
80000 tuition × 4 years = 320000
320000 × 12 players = 3,840,000
At what point does an elite college athlete shut it down? Injuries are part of competing. Should Zion have sat out his senior year of HS? Shut it down his sophomore year? Middle school? The NCAA system will remain until enough athletes opt out and choose an alternate path. People like Whitlock and JJ complaining about the system using players... fail to acknowledge the terms and rules are clearly defined when guys sign with a college. Don't sign if you don't like the contract.
Good discussion.
I'm siding with the Columbia and Duke grads here.
Don't put that on the coach who's been exploiting players for years.
Zion is a grown man and he'll do what's best for himself and family.
I think what they should do is wait till march and then play Zion
Whitlock says that a coach should set his team up to lose and fail for the benefit of ONE player. For a guy who cries about people behaving pampered and super star status he sure likes to blame the coaches for problems that's not under their control.
Good topic!
"God screams before he yells" real statement
So what they’re saying is Zion should just skip college basketball and any other top prospects.. why weren’t they saying this two weeks ago? Yeah Zion got hurt but he’s gonna be healthy in two weeks, just like he was last week when this wasn’t even a discussion
Nobody really listens on these debate shows. They all just want to get their point across. It's hard to watch.
Maybe Whitlock needs to check his facts. John Calipari has spoke multiple times about the NCAA paying players or allowing them to make money from their likeness.
Dominoe effect. Start paying the players and ticket prices, Jerseys, custodian items, merchandise etc going up. Be careful what you ask for.
#getridofDahntay
Everything it seems regarding pro sports especially the NBA and NFL is about money. Very few players it seems play for the love of the game. I think Zion will continue to play in college bc his past comments seem to pursue the flat out of the love of the game. Zion is going to make hundreds of millions of dollars via the sport and endorsements. It is totally up to the player himself in regards to what his future is. I as a fan hope Zion plays the remainder of the season which includes the ACC tournament and the field of 64 (68).
So he turned downed 125,000 from KU and takes Dukes money and now he just gonna sit out?......ok.....I think he should too.....but if you have any integrity then you prorate that money out and pay that “bag man “ back
Why he not wearing LBJ's shoes? They both are big heavy players with explosive style
Coach k should coach a team minus one player on how to defend practice lay up drills for 40 minutes. Go Heels!
I always argued if you don't pay them give them their likeness back so they can get sponsorships and sell their autographs
He won't play again. No chance, he's prepping for the NBA and Nike may get sued for big $$$$$
Just judging by how Zion has acted I think he'll keep playing.
why would you sue nike?
I'd be very surprised if that were the case.
Did Whitlock cut off Marcellus about staying on topic but Whitlock never answered the question?
How Coach K/Duke benefit from Zion sitting the rest of the season?
If he's able to play he should play, if he's not 100% then don't
If you don't like the rules and regulations in the NBA or NCAA then start your own league. These professional athletes together are worth billions of dollars, they're most responsible for "the future" stars like Zion.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Lemme guess nxt vid is about the Lakers
LOL. LeBron is the gift that keeps giving for sports talk/debate shows.
rotoninja I wonder who the media is gonna talk about once Lebron retires
It should be up to the Kid and Family if He still wants to play not anyone else
Naw that's stupid a player says I'm not play well what happening if everyone said we're not going to play .......then what ?
Coach k need to sit him down on purpose, remember coach k you walk in this young man home and promise his parents to do right by there son.
Zion will not sit out the rest of the season
So if Zion want to play why does he need to stop because everyone wants him too!
Good debate
For a grade 1 mild knee sprain which he walked off😂 ... You can literally get the same injury in training and practice so basically he just shouldn’t work out or do anything till the draft. Like you!
Marcellus has the WORST takes.
