- Saturday 7th December 2013. LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 no 60019 Bittern (4464)
The Capital Streak between Colton Jn and Temple Hirst Jn on the East Coast Mainline and approved for 90 mph running to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Mallard's world speed record.
Over a measured distance of 0.72 Miles achieves 89.4 mph
A perfect example of how an assembly of machined parts becomes this living, breathing entity with soul, guts and heart; carrying the aspirations of all who designed, built and worked on him throughout his entire lifetime...
I saw them in the 50s and 60s doing 90 plus through Tallington. To see this makes my heart rate go through the roof.Oh what sweet memories of my boyhood.
What a fantastic engine!!
Im from germany .. but i love all mallards so mutch. This A4 is very fast and beautiful. Great.
(Sorry for my english )
Thank you very much!
You are so lucky to be able to see them run like this. Here in the US, when we actually do see an engine run, the speed is always set to "sedate."
I love A4s! They are so strong yet beautiful
Love the Coaches...Blood and Custard...Great Name !!!!!!!!!!!!1
As the poet once said, "If man has invented a machine with half the soul of the steam locomotive, he hasn't filed for a patent yet."
Absolutely gorgeous
Great catch !
Spencer had to hurry or the Duke and duchess would be late for their afternoon tea
Did Spencer please Sir Toppen Hat & the Fat Controller by being a good engine?
@Soviet Silver Link ☭ L.O.L!!!!!!
Just majestic
“Activate Propane infusion…”
(Speed increases to 102 miles per hour)
Nice one that's not an easy pan, thanks for sharing.
Fantastic clip of the A4 at speed.
Great to see! Such a shame that they need approval to do these speeds! I’m of the opinion that everything is built for a purpose, and as such should be used for that purpose! Bittern was built to work and built for speed, so should be driven the same way now as it was in period!
What a lovely sight
Goose bumps!
That is fecking awesome!
Nice vid Simon... not an easy shot. Pretty amazing to see her do 90mph with 10 on and yet still have plenty of steam to spare so that she is blowing off.......

90mph A4? She was just getting started.
A standard example of a LNER A4 Express Locomotive racing at it's regular service speed back in the old British's Days Of Steam.
Thanks great clip
Glad you enjoyed it
I live in the country and hate noise. But I can make exceptions.
How very scientific¡¡¡
Great capture..
can i use this video in my next train compiation video....credit to you will be given...
Yes you're welcome too
@@CarCapture Thank you!
Still 30 mph too slow.
Probably a good time to point out that by the end of mallards record run it was absolutely destroyed and needed extensive repair..and it only clocked 126 for a couple seconds
@@mitchellhogg4627 probably a good time to point out that it was a joke.
@@bjoe385 A joke is when it is funny. Your OP was a ridiculous suggestion, and your comeback is a rude excuse. so yeah, do be more polite.
@@MarcABrown-tt1fp There’s a common theme here, what’s a joke is subjective, dependant on tone and context and rude is subjective, dependent on tone and context. Both tone and context are both difficult to convey through a sentence that only has five words but I can tell you that my joke was intended to be perceived as flippant, somewhat sarcastic, and most definitely not an accurate reflection of my actual thoughts. And my “rude excuse” is neither especially rude as there is no negative tone attached and isn’t necessarily worded in a threatening or insulting manner and it isn’t an excuse since it’s true.
@@bjoe385 "Still 30mph too slow" comes off pragmatic, and lacks knowledge on the subject rather than being a joke of any kind. because that is impossible to do without damaging the locomotive, thus rendering the "joke" moot. Not really a joke but more power to ya.
That joke has the same power as bubsy the bobcat lol...
Wao
What was she disguised as. She doesn't usually run under own name. I've seen her as Dominion of Canada. Bit of a giveaway no Canadian Bell
No disguise. Running as Bittern
One minute of nada, then he cuts off the last of the train.
Isn’t that Mallard
No, it's Bittern. Mallard is mothballed at the National Railway Museum
:)
Awful puffing sync..
This loco is too fast for there to be a puff each 0.05 - 0.1 seconds
Not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting the footage is edited badly? As it is untouched
Simon Houghton no. i mean like how the uk makes the puffing slower than the locomotives speed
The locomotive has 3 cylinders, one on the inside, which increases the puff rate. The blast from the inner cylinder has a slightly different note, which is harder to discern here, but on other videos the 'tuf, tuf, tuf'... 'tuf, tuf, tuf' sound is quite clear. Going a bit too fast here, but no fault of the video which is superb.
@@s_rv. At that speed there are no decipherable puffs. What you're hearing is the connecting rods.
