The crazy thing is that this song doesn’t even come close to doing Tilian justice. He hits some amazing notes in “here comes the winter” “man of the year” many more
The last 3 albums are the best albums of their career. Then the Jonny Craig stuff. The early days of Tilian are alright...just stay away from the self titled album. Very rough time for the band and it just isn't good lol. Mothership I'd say is the bands crowning achievement. Once Tilian lost the thin whininess of his early days and got that signature rasp he has now, the whole bands been firing on all cylinders. Mothership, artificial selection, afterburner.... killed their whole discography with these 3 recent albums.
Tillian has been such a powerhouse in terms of vocals for DGD. He's one of those incredibly unique vocalists that you can just recognize immediately upon hearing it. Same goes for Jon, his screams are just amazing. Especially for them both to be in the range they are and yet still sound so almost raspy and strained, while as you said still being so clean and wonderful. Love to see people experiencing DGD, such a unique flavor of music. Loved the video and your musical take on it.
Jonny was a powerhouse too, and Kurt makes great music. DGD has had some excellent vocalists, and it's really no surprise that they've managed to stay successful despite so much turnover at frontman.
The Tillian albums have def been their golden years. I feel the Craig years were the weakest, with Kurt they were starting to figure it out, and now with Tillian the formula is down.
My son introduced me to these guys several years ago, and I sincerely love their style. I'm an old metal head/punk guy who has played in many bands over the years, and I can say that I find these guys to be exquisite musicians. Do yourself a favor and listen to anything on their album Mothership. My personal favorite from that release is Here Comes The Winner. It takes you on a musical journey.
Mothership was my first DGD album and it's still my favorite. I always go back to Inspire the Liars and Betrayed By the Game, but the whole album is stellar.
I just found this video so sorry for the 3 month late reply but FINALLY someone who is as big a fan of mothership as I am. I feel like it's their perfect inbetween of their new sound and sounds found on Artificial Selection/Afterburner. I feel like Mothership was super experimental for them and it just was the album that gave birth to the following 2.
Definitely worth looking into the 3 variations(era's?) of Dance Gavin Dance, each vocalist brought their own flare. I personally was a fan of Kurt Travis era
Betrayed By the Game, We Own the Night, Inspire the Liars, Gospel Burnout, then some old school with Blue Dream. Anything off Afterburner is great, except the Spanish one. Then you’ve got Story of My Bros for the lolz.
This band is unmatched. Their music is pure magic. Full of highs and lows, amazing melodies and fun lyrics. Every song is a journey that I am 100% here for. 💜
I'm a little sad that you didn't mention one of the most powerful and striking lyrics in DGDs catalog. The first time I ever heard the words "I want YOU to matter to YOU, forget those backstabbers" I was personally awe struck by how hard they hit me as someone who deals with depression and low self image. I'm always happy to see a new DGD fan though, great video.
Dgd has an amazing discography. They have a melodolic mix of jazz, punk, rock, funk, metal and more and blend it all so amazingly youll go from vibing to headbanging to grooving to moshing all in 1 song and no other band has such abrupt but smooth transitions
7:53 perfectly explains why DGD is by far my favorite band. 2 phenomenal lead singers with very contrasting styles blended so perfect but makes you feel different emotions at once. Love them
Watching people react to Dance Gavin Dance, my FAVORITE (not that well known in México) band; and seeing it their joy and surprise in their faces has warmed my heart these last few months. Thank you!
Love DGD! I have to say, what i love most about them is their harsh fusion between clean vocals and dirty vocals blended in with instrumentals that are somewhere in between. Honestly, it's like cooking a well balanced meal - you get a mixture of little things to create something just pheromonal. Love the reactions! Some others you may like: Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most, We Own The Night, and Head Hunter.
Can I just say that this is the first video I watch from this channel and you referring to Tillian's voice as "voice of an angel" just made my night! Tillian is our king and savior
New here, DGD lead me here. Highly recommend taking your time to listen to their discography, their progression is more remarkable than anything. And the fact that they are still together, even more so.
nice reaction.! DGD is one of the most underrated bands that i listen to. their new album 'afterburner' is still my aoty contender, it's damn near brilliant. i'm spinning it over and over again.
I remember seeing a comment on the original music video about how Jon represents the conscious and wanting your happiness and being carefree of life, and Will represents all of your worries and stress and bad things. Essentially tilian being so hyper focused on catching the bad guy, will, he’s losing hold of what’s important in life, or what matters. And the airplane is just a representation of traveling through life. Idk if that’s what they meant with the video but when I read that comment it really made the song mean that much more to me.
Hey, reviews on DGD! Finally! Offer you to watch "Prisoner", "Young Robot" and "Son of a Robot". There's many interesting melody lines and more beautiful vocal for ya, check this out (at least you should watch last two, cuz this is animated cartoons, this is really interesting) And yes. Gospel burnout is DEFINITELY one of my favorites by DGD, same with: - Parallels - Chocolate Jackalope - Story Of My Bros Overall a great video, it feels great to see DGD get some recognition. Hoping to see more!
I loved this so much! DGD has been a favorite of mine for the last 13+ years, and your analysis of their sound (plus you rocking out to them) was excellent. What about “Truly Random Code” by A Lot Like Birds? Beautiful instrumentals and they have a former DGD vocalist. Also, “Act III: Modulate Back to the Tonic” by The Sound of Animals Fighting. Keep doing what you do!
What I like about them is that they have some many different genres in one band. This song is poppy, Summertime Gladness is funky, and Man of the Year is heavy. Songs where he shows off his vocals more are Here Comes the Winner and Variation.
This was a random popup for me. But, I've been listening to DGD since high school. I've seen them live about 3 or 4 times. They are one of my favorite bands and they will never get old for me. I'm hoping to see them in 2021 or after the pandemic is over. I still have my tickets from last year😭. So glad to see them get recognized!

Lol this band redefined their genre and made their record label filthy rich writing Downtown Battle Mountain. Its really a unique and legendary piece of art. That's still relevant 15 years after being recorded. Jonny was like what 17 or 18? Apparently laid down all the clean lyrics in an afternoon; on like 2-3 takes? Completely improvised i may add. Then finalized during editing.
Lemon Meringue Tie by DGD may be a good one to contrast this post 2017 era. That's when Johnny Craig was lead vocals and he basically claims to be a soul singer, he was lead in Emarosa and Slaves (US) as well each have new sounds as he's left (they've matured and in some cases gotten better) but I can always feel the anguish / soul in Johnnys voice.
ooo i love that you said the vocals are like instruments, because the unclean vocalist jon mess has said before that he uses his voice more as an instrument, which is why in most songs he has nonsensical lyrics, its more about what they sound like than what they mean
regarding your comment about the sampled drums, I'd strongly recommend the track unboxing on their song "Young Robot" by URM Academy. The mix was done by Kris Crummett and, as far as I'm aware, they don't actually use any samples for the drums (thought my understanding is much less than your own)
