- A premature elephant calf is being raised by zookeepers. Her mother was not producing milk so the female calf had to be taken away. Zookeepers now feed and bath the baby and even sleep next to her. The calf won't be on display at Pittsburgh Zoo for several months. She has to focus first on growing and becoming stronger.
What a good girl. Ellies are such kind and loving creatures.
Hard to explain why I love elephants so much....they are really great creatures.
I really hope she's able to be with her Mom again once she's big enough - the mother must be traumatized by the zoo just taking her baby away!

I hope she has lots of time with her mom ! The milk feedings could be fed after she try’s nursing from her mom until the mom is able to produce more ( this will not happen unless the suckles from mom)

Elephants are social animals that need a herd. She needs to be , as all of them do, in a sanctuary to roam free under the safety and watchful eyes of the keepers. I am pleased she is being cared for, but ultimately she all of the elephants need mass areas to roam

Even if the mother was not producing milk the baby calf did not have to be taken away. Do we take away babies from their mothers if the mothers don't breastfeed them????? I understand you need to feed her but she can be fed in the presence of her mother. There is an alternative motive that this video does not mention. Unless the mother was attacking its own calf there is no reason to separate them. The mother could be taught through positive reinforcement to care for the calf. This is done in most elephant shelters. Shame SHAME SHAMEon you for doing this. Very selfish and sad.
Most importantly the little calf needs shit(dung), and very badly. It's a shame they separated the mother elephant from her little poopaphant(aka calf). These zookeepers don't know what they are doing, it's quite sad. Any keeper with experience knows it is very important to emulate the mother elephant and stuff the little calf's face and trunk full of dung, and rub/cake lots of dung all over the calf's body multiple times as needed daily to keep it happy, and shield it from sun. Dung is very vital for a little calf's happiness and survival. They love to sniff it, rub their faces in it, roll around in it, sleep on piles of it, play with and eat it. Without dung, a little calf will become very terrified, and can lose the will to live. The little poopaphant in this video needed dung very badly. Shame on those zookeepers.
Those zookeepers are idiots. They have no idea what they are doing. A mother elephant always stuff's her little calf's mouth, trunk + face completely full with her dung, and she will always rub and smear her dung all over her little calf's face and entire body daily, as needed to keep it feeling happy, warm, and safe. Her dung also shields the calf from sun + parasites. A calf is entirely dependent on dung. Without dung, a calf will become confused, brokenhearted, and extremely terrified. Eventually the calf will experience an extreme rush of fatigue and weakness, which is often very fatal for a calf. At elephant orphanages, the keepers will provide visitors with pie tins filled with adult female elephant dung, to "pie face" a calf with the dung. A calf loves to be greeted with a face full of dung. These zookeepers never should've separated the calf from it's mother, but since they did, they should've been constantly stuffing the calf's face full with dung, and rubbing and smearing dung all over the calf's entire face and body. That calf needed dung badly.

Adorable Leoncitos, They are killed by older elephants, and the guardians of elephants, they kill the little lions by order of them and the whites who care for thousands of elephants, there are many herds of Elephants, the Lions are disappearing, The leopards, The Cheetahs , subsist, hyena and wild dogs, but neither are many
