@GeraintDaviesGDD Actually that Rugby Union (5 Five) Nations Game Match between Wales & England was actually being played at Wembley Stadium in which Wales had defeated England by (32) - (31) just only by (1 One) Point & yes also that there were other Rugby Union Football Game Matches in past also had been played along with both Football as in (Soccer) & also Rugby League Football Game Matches as well too of course.

I couldn't watch the game because I was traveling back to RAF Cosford, from Aberystwyth. Got to Machynlleth and called my mother up. I ran up and down the platform. Returned to Cosford and joined the rest of my fellow Welshmen in a huge piss up. Watching the whole game. We partied late and suffered the following day. The true English rugby fans who'd expected the title took the banter very well. But you always have the other type who come out with, I don't really like rugby, I prefer football. Take care and thanks for your message..... Bonus point win come Saturday!!!!!.... Fingers crossed....

And Gibbs became an honourary Scot! Would love to see the Stanger try from 1990 to continue the theme - back row move (Scotland ran a similar one i 1st half of the game), how the Eng defence was set, and of course what would a TMO make of the grounding today???

    Nice work.
I was sat in my classroom in Caracas that day. I'd come into school in the morning as it was the only place with Internet and the match wasn't shown on television in Venezuela. I had to watch a text feed on the BBC website. No pictures. No commentary. I kept checking my watch and wondering how much injury time there could possible be with the score at 25-31.
Suddenly it changed to 32-31 (there was never a point when it read 30-31 leaving me wondering about a conversion). I had to rub my eyes, but there it was - and it also said final score! I gave a whoop of joy and cycled the five miles home on a high. It was ages before the video of the game arrived in the post, but I played it continually until the tape wore out. Max Boyce and Tom Jones were the pre-match entertainment.
You've done a great job here. I agree, Quinnell's juggle and Gibbs' steps would probably have the same result in any era you could name. Fascinating analysis though. Many thanks! Best of luck with the channel.

Lucky enough to be there mid stand in the seats as a last minute replacement on a work hospitality day . (free day out ) The only Taff in a row of seated Englishmen , some with a superiority complex : -) . I distinctly remember leaping out of my seat screaming after the Gibbs try, the only one in the row for which I was totally abused for ! What a great send off for the old Wembley and a day to remember. The banter in the boozer afterwards was legendary , more-so after a few jars. Missing live Rugby. Thankyou for posting at this time .

  • @llanelli14

For me it's Quinnell NOT taking the ball cleanly first time that makes the try, It causes him to offload to Gibbs a fraction later than the England defense expect and allows him the thread that narrow channel between Rodber and Hill. Gibbs still had a bit of work to do though!

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD

Nice analysis Geraint. I always wondered if Rodber didn’t stick his arm out to tackle Gibbs as he had been penalised for that shoulder charge just earlier and would risk a high challenge. Your angles show that it was actually Hill biting in that created just the gap Gibbs needed to cut his line. Thanks.

I remember watching that game becoming increasingly vexed at England wasting ball and wasting chances, even allowing for an unusual backline. And with that conclusion to the game I was poised to go off on a bit of a rant when they cut back to the studios and there was Jiffy smiling away, and straight away I felt if that result could make him smile after time he was having it simply couldn't be a bad thing.

That my friend is called arrogance and over confidence. England lost because through out the game each time Wales got into their half they gave away penalties which Niel Jenkins kicked over keeping Wales in the game. Even today should a side get into the English half they give a penalty away better 3 points than 7. Some would call that game management others would call it blatant cheating.

What about Scarlets v's All Blacks 1972 ?, I remember the Headmaster of Llanddarog school bringing a tv in and some of the children going down to the canteen to watch the start of the game.
