Patchell is an amazing player and a stand out over here in NZL. Gatland needs to go on a driving holiday around NZL and recruit a few Kiwis with Welsh grandparents

I agree Anscombe needs to come in asap…… the teams needs a leader at 10 and they need to win a match or two to build some confidence. Sadly in the mid/ long term he’s not the answer, and there lies our problem. I don’t see anyone else anywhere near the level required for international rugby. Costello certainly isn’t the answer….. you say he still young at 23 etc etc but we’ve been hearing that now for two years. At 23 he should be a lot further down the international track than he is.His kicks from hand is often woeful bordering sometimes on unbelievable. Goal kicking is average as is his distribution. Really not sure who can fill this after Anscombe goes………hopefully a young guy will come through very soon……..but I don’t think we’ve seen anyone yet.
I take your point about Costelow and I do mostly agree. Where I give him a little bit more grace is the fact that hes been playing generally in a poor team that's not going forward. Granted his play has been poor and kicking terrible but its not the environment to get a new player acclimatized to a new role. I dunno, its looking a little rough ahead though no matter who they throw in after Anscombe like you said

Personally id have him focus on being a playmaking 15. Thats a very useful player to have.

Costellow seems to be a stop gap until we find our next main outside half , don't get me wrong maybe few years time he could be great, I agree with you about Lloyd the poor guy has never been given a position to stick with for him to refine himself. If Andscombe is fit I would have him all day long IF he is fit.
I often wonder about Jarrod Evans? Surely Neil Jenkins can sort out his kicking?
My 3 options would be

2.sheedy
3.Jarrod Evans
I just think costellow needs more time, maybe by the time Andscombe gives up due to injury it would be good timing.
Yeah I think there’s a good player in there when it comes to Costelow he’s just not out it all together yet 🤷🏻♂️
As for Evans I just he’s just not a natural kicker if you get me. Like he’s had to really work hard to get to that point so not sure there’s anymore development in that spot for him but he’s great with the ball in his hands

Another 10/10 video, Christian. Great work. I was listening to this video in the gym. Get home and I see that the Ospreys/Stormers game is on S4C. “What a great opportunity to have a proper look at Dan Edwards!” I thought. Turned the game on, 21 minutes on the clock and the first thing I see is Dan Edwards being walked off injured or for a HIA or something. TYPICAL!
You know my opinion on Costelow. He shouldn’t be anywhere near the team. Anscombe is easily our best 10 at the moment. But do we play him for a year or 2 to get the results but sacrifice giving some younger guys the experience heading towards the 2027 World Cup? I dunno.
I really don’t think it matters who we play at 10 at the moment…. With the platform that our forwards are giving us, you could throw a prime Dan Carter into the team and even he would be useless.
We’re too nice of a team. We need some hard, dirty b*staffs to do the grunt work to build some good forward.

I’d prefer have a calming Anscombe for a year while the rest of the team develops and then the theoretically once the teams in a better spot bring a younger 10 in?
Agreed about the platform though mate “the short fat props” 😂and I’m hoping that players like Mann and Daf Jenkins start getting a bit of a nasty edge in the team. Mann was right in amongst it yesterday to be fair 😂
We need Patch back, looking like he is in fine form in NZ. I really think an in form patchell is up there with the best of them and could squeeze a World Cup. But I am a Scarlets fan so I have very good memories of 2017 😂

Cytuno ! That's what I've been saying. Patch can match up against the best NZ has to offer, he's done well down here and deserves the recall - even if it's only until someone else is ready to take over.

Hi Christian, good to hear from you, yes we need Gareth Anscome back at 10 we can get 2 to 3 years from Gareth , another I do like at 10 is Callum Sheady he played well in the Wayne Pivac days. I do rate Sam Costelow as a 10. A lot of work for Warren Gatland to do ready for the summer tour, Always good to hear your views on Welsh Rugby, have a good one take care

As an irish fan watching Wales without any club or player bias I think Anscombe has to be ur starting 10. Costelow is a solid player like a ross Byrne or Hastings for Scotland, he won't let u down but isn't world class at any one thing. Lloyd is not a 10, Ireland tried and failed to turn joey carbery from a 15 to 10 but it never worked out. For Wales to progress over next few years u need to sort ur 10, loose head and tight head. U have very good back row and eletruc back 3 but without a 10 and props u are fecked
Yeah agree with everything you said mate. I do think Costelow could emerge as a solid player, he’s just been a bit up and down and struggled in a team that is struggling itself 😬

Jarrod Evans is theoretically eligible because when he signed for Harlequins he didn't have any offers from a Welsh Region to stay in Wales. Not sure how it would work in practice, but by the letter of the agreement, he can be selected.

Agree with everything you've said mate. For me the biggest factor is Gatland/Wales need to decide what type of team we want to be then building around that. For me Costelow is number 1 until Joe hawkins comes back to wales or somebody better comes through. Anscombe is clearly the best 10 however with his age and injuries i wouldnt back to build with him as 1st choice towards the next world cup.
Yeah agreed mate I just think I’d put in Anscombe for a year just to try and get a win or 2 on the board and try and get some momentum because atm is just not a good place to be 😬
I'd like to see Edwards get called up for Australia - even if he doesn't play (maybe against the Reds, though?) just to acclimatise him to the international environment, I think that'd be good for him. Otherwise I definitely think it will be Anscombe starting and Costelow on the bench.
I don't think Anscombe would start above Costelow atm. I think you want the safe pair of hands that Anscombe is coming off the bench to finish tight games off, rather than Costelow. Sorta like the Biggar/Anscombe dynamic in 2019, with biggar coming off the bench to finish off tight games and Anscome being told to fucking go for it for 60 mins. Will only help Costelow's confidence going forward
Yeah I wouldn’t be against it tbh. I’m happy to give him time but if they want to have a look at him in the squad I guess it can’t do any harm 🤷🏻♂️
Ioan Lloyds best position is the wing, Wales could really use him in a similar way Ireland use Mac Hansen as an extra playmaker coming in field as an extra distributer alongside Anscombe/Costelow.
Also if Costelow is our 10 going forward he needs a good playmaker at 12 someone like Ben Thomas or Watkin can do it as Costelow loves to get a 2nd touch and take on the defence himself, thats always been his biggest strength is his running game
That’s a good point about Lloyd/Hansen. Thing is unless he’s playing regular for the Scarlets on the wing he won’t get picked there for Wales. Plus I really think he wants to play 10 so who knows 🤷🏻♂️

I could only nit-pick at this analysis, I pretty much fully agree. Anscombe is a no-brainer if he's willing and able. I don't worry about his age because we only need him for this year and maybe one more 6N; after that I expect he'd jump before he was pushed anyway. You're dead right IMO that we just need a sprinkling of steel amidst all of these green shoots, until they learn what winning feels like. I'm profoundly unconvinced by Costelow but it's not like there are heirs apparent pounding on the door, so maybe a year of understudying Anscombe will bring him on? I like Williams as a solid option for Os but for Wales he ticks no boxes at all; too old, too slow, and not a good enough goal-kicker. Neither Evans is a serious option IMO, for most of the reasons you state. Reed and Edwards not ready, although I'm not sure the latter is far off if he can get some more game time. Sheedy is probably the best-of-the-rest, lets hope the Cardiff move works for him. All options for tomorrow... but I feel like Chicken tonight.

Glad you agree, what you’re saying about Anscombe is my thoughts exactly. Just a solid experience player to get us over the line even if it’s only for the next 5 to 10 games. Hopefully then that brings Costelow on.
Outside of that, like you said, the cupboards are bare and the best we can hope for is for maybe a Dan Edwards or someone to have a really quick rise.

I'm struggling to get excited about almost any option at 10 Wales have.
Costelow and Sheedy are painfully average
Williams, Lloyd, Cai Evans just aren't 10s (I'd include Ben Thomas in here too for people saying he could move to 10)
Anscombe and Patchell are aging and injury prone
Jarrod has as many negatives as positives about him and won't get picked (even if I have major love for the guy).
Edwards and Reed are the future, with Dan clearly ahead of Will
It's a pretty bare cupboard sadly and I hate being so negative but I'm in a right mood with rugby in general right now 😂
Can’t really argue with anything you’ve said mate. Edwards seams like most peoples pick for the future doesn’t he. Not sure if Reed will develop yet but it’s still so early for both these guys so we can hope 🙏🏼😬

The issue with Costelow is he spends alot of time on the floor. He likes to try and carry the ball I know he was a 9/10 at academy level and it's like a 9 playing 10 constantly looking for a gap. I think people are right about Ioan Lloyd he has the highest ceiling at the moment yes his best position is full back. At the beginning of their Careers so was Anscombes, Barret and McKenzie. Not a fan of Sheedy only because I don't think he has the range of passing it's always little shuffle passes and I definitely don't think he will push out De Beer at Cardiff. Owen Williams good player unfortunately don't see the value of bringing in an older player with so few caps himself. Last but certainly not least. Dan Edwards, he is a player who creates for others for the 20mins he was on the field he created half breaks for his forwards. My only concern is he has a tendency to only be on the field for 20 mins. He's 20 and playing with massive men and will learn to get out of harms way. Definitely my pick going forwards but won't be capped for 2/3 years.
Hard to argue with you points as always Dave. Im more of a fan of sheedy that you but I don’t ultimately think he will by the guy going forward I think you’re right about Edwards I think he’s the best prospect but his size could be a problem concerning injuries and that’s also something Costelow has started to have issues with so who knows 🤷🏻♂️
I too think Edwards will grow into being first pick. Not a fan of Anscombe, but he does the job.
Costello very much depends on who plays along side him. Not sure if he values the option of having somewhere to dump a troublesome ball or if he relies on calls from others. He seems to be our regular, at least for now and he could develop into the best of them
Yeah I agree mate. There’s a good player in there and we’ve seen it in flashes he needs to start putting it all together and I do like your point about having a guy outside him helping him call the shots. Watkin is probably the best option for that role I guess 🤔

Must say Anscombe in a different sphere to Costelow , who will I DOUBT ever be good enough ..we lost 3 games by small margins . We kicked one penalty in tournament...Need to get points on board , Anscombe best option right now. .no doubt ..

As for Patchel, I think he’s only out in New Zealand for a year. so once his contract is up, I wonder if he will come back to a region for one more year and attempt to get the caps he needs to hit 25🤷🏻♂️

Yeah Patchel has always been a bit up and down. You can see him tearing a team apart one game then goes missing the next. Having said that if he , then he would be right in the discussion for starting straightaway

Still technically eligible but its difficult being in NZ, he will be back in a year though so will still be around ready for the next WC
Cheers, done a search, he's playing for the Highlanders in NZ, doing OK by all accounts, can't believe he's got less than the necessary 25 caps, got to be in the mix, our young lads seemed to be under pressure in the six nations this year. We're up against the WRU aswell though, I'm still getting over the release of Shaun Edwards, he was a great stand off, so his experience would be useful in this situation
Always struggled with consistency in my humble opinion. Capable of amazing stuff but could go missing at times. Plus he was competing with Biggar which is unfair for any player 😂
Anscombe - starter or bench 1st. Personally my choice at 10
Sheedy - bench or starter 1st
Sam Costelow - only in physical games England, Ireland, France kind
Dan Edwards - possible 1st team starter hopefully soon picked
Jarrod Evans - meh…
Ioan Lloyd - only in Italy Scotland games less predictable. Better in more free open games. More experimental than costelow.
Will reed - not international level
Cai Evians - not international level
Owen Williams - done at international and not at the level of anscombe
Ben Thomas could be looked at?

Thomas has been brilliant at 12 this year and I really think he’s found his best position now. Would be hesitant moving him back to 10 with how well he’s playing?
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast my problem with Jarrod is kicking. Right now international rugby is about how big of a boot you’ve got. Distance matters. Wales only kicked once at goal during the six nation and we barely made kicking meter looking for touch or on clearing and if he doesn’t have it then he’s doesn’t have that then it’s gonna be no different with Costelow on the pitch.
Only reason for suggesting Ben Thomas at 10 because we lack in 10 and we have tones of centres coming through or that could play. Gonna be tough competition for that international shirt with Grady, Hawkins, Llewellyn, Tomkins, Watkins, Hennessey, Ackerman and K. Williams, J. Robert’s
Gotta be honest, not one of them will be elite outside halves. They’ll have to do until the real deal comes along.

Short term pain, long term gain. Also, Ospreys are starting to rumble and Cardiff have been unlucky against the Irish cheats……..i mean teams😉

Someone else called him a 7/10 player… that puts him 3 points above most the Welsh back line.
He’s certainly not spectacular but he works hard and defends well. With a better 10 he’d be a real asset.
What your video doesn’t really cover is that none of the pretenders are in the same class as Biggar, preistland or Anscombe… none of whom were a Farrell, Sexton or Barrett.
Didn’t really want to compare them to Biggar as I think he’s on an island on his one when it comes to Welsh 10ns
