I just read that about Caroline Kennedy. A little disturbing. At that time he was 21 years old.
The lyrics are about his then-girlfriend/wife...he couldn't get her name to fit the metre, then he saw a picture of Caroline Kennedy, and the song became sweet CAROLINE..that's the story (more or less) that I heard...

It blows my mind how utterly stupid people are today. He didn't know Caroline Kennedy personally. She was on the cover of a magazine he saw when he was writing material in Memphis in 1969. He simply saw the name and lifted it because the three syllables fit with the melody. That's how songwriting and inspiration works, not that someone who's only contribution to the world is writing dumb and overreaching UA-cam comments would understand any sort of creative process.
