The formation style was a design choice to try and recreate the chaos of the invasion. Their movement is set to individual rather than squad, which has caused the issue with throwing grenades/shotguns/etc..
I have found a fix for it, however I have reverted all the units back to normal rifle squads till I release the update.
Yeah the formations and slowness meant to replicate the lack of experience and organisation that led to failure of the first Klendathu assault, but it also causes unintentional bugs, no pun intended.
