Spencer, you remind me so much of my amazing dad. When he married my mom back in 1956, he’d never even painted a room, but when they bought a brand new tract home in 59, they quickly realized that if they wanted something done, my dad would have to do it, because money was tight. He dove in and within a couple years, he’d tiled the kitchen and bathroom, painted every room, built storm windows for every window, built a small porch off of the back door, planted a huge garden, built a brick barbecue pit, and laid a concrete driveway. Within 5 years, he’d divided the basement into a laundry room, play rooms, and family room, hung paneling, tiled the floor and steps, wired overhead lights and sockets, and hung a dropped ceiling. Ultimately, he could wallpaper like a pro, do plumbing work, build anything (he was in the process of finishing his longtime dream of building a huge model railroad layout when he was diagnosed with & died of colon cancer), and lay brick, concrete, and stone! This was at a time when you didn’t have access to computers or even “how to” books to help, and he didn’t have anyone to teach him. ro While he was working so hard on all of these projects, he was also a devoted husband, highly successful businessman (despite dropping out of school in 10th grade due to his ongoing struggles to read), and he was a phenomenal dad to me, my brother and sister! My mom used to get so frustrated with him, because it took him so long (in her opinion) to finish a project, but like you, he was a perfectionist and he wouldn’t stop working on any project until it was perfect. Even when he had caught up on home projects, I can’t count the number of times he would drop everything to help one of us kids with a project, no matter how big or difficult it might be! Now here I am, 65 years old, and one of my favorite smells is wood & sawdust, because some of my best memories are those where I sat with my dad for hours and watched him work on our basement, or build me a chest for my dolls & doll clothes, or lay track down for his HO trains! There don’t seem to be many men out there like my dad anymore, but you’re one of those men. And I know Kinsey, Beau and Cam will thank God every night that you are in their lives!💞 PS I apologize for the length of this comment. Just felt like I needed to share this!

Every time I see someone working with different building material, it reminds me of my dad too.. Blessings to this lovely family ❣ 🧡🙏🏻

Hi Suzanne Marie! My niece's name is also Suzanne Marie. That's what caught my attention, lol! She just turned 40. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes when she was 5 yrs. old. The doctors said she wouldn't live past her teens. She is considered a "brittle diabetic". In spite of all that, she is raising her youngest niece, who has a lot of health issues also, and sitting with her dad's father, he has Alzheimer's. She has never married or had children of her own. She helps me a great deal with my grandchildren and my parents and her parents. She truly is irreplaceable. Your words and memories of your dad are so sweet. My dad is exactly the same way. I always tease him, "God broke the mold when he made you." :) I agree with you about Spencer. He is a very impressive young man, and actually, they are a very impressive couple. Have a beautiful blessed day. Sry for the loss of your dad.

Hi guys I've watched from the beginning of the build, and it has turned out way better than I thought it would. Spencer has done a remarkable job considering he had to learn on the job so to speak, and Kenz your jokes are so much fun, and all the video work plus herding two very cute rug rats I salute you both. One thing I would caution you about don't get so focused on the house that you miss a big safety problem outside, A toddler and a pond can lead to a heart ache like no other. Fence is cheap compared dealing with a tragedy. I'm off my soap box now. keep up the great work.

Tile looks great almost done! Because of your situation I would just use a shower rod and curtain too be able a have a shower indoors. And drain the system out side and save the heater system. That can be used later on. And put the glass doors in later getting 72" - 84" which you might want the taller to have the top track above the window. Just treat the glass with rainex and a squegee after every use. You can thank me later!
Something to think about is a hot tub and a outdoor shower, and cooking counter with a burgala, shade screen 🤔. Expanding your living space too enjoy those spring to winter as well.
Your sweat equity is building, just use it to reinvest into the property.
Anyway it's your call , take care and be safe and God bless amen. ❤

We started with a shower curtain and switched to glass. Shower curtains tend to stick to you while showering and glass allows better control over where the water ends up. Splash control. Just found it saved us less damage to the rest of the bathroom.

They clearly stated their reasoning; they have a small bathroom and want to maximise the sensation of space when in it. All they really need to do is install a curved curtain rod, and pull the shower curtain all the way over after showering. The the shower won't feel so cramped when they are in it, and the room won't seem so small whtn they aren't showering.

Fortunately there weren't that many videos yet so I was able to catch up on all the other ones you had posted before the next video came out. I'm not even sure if that was 2 years ago or 3 years ago because the time has just flown by. I can say that I am thoroughly impressed with the way you two have worked. Your work ethic is something to be proud of. Spencer, you have not only been the jack of all trades, you have become the master. Keep up the good work.

I used the same tile you’re using for your shower curb, for the floor in my master bathroom. It’s held up well after 1 year of wear.
    Shower looks great!
Hack for removing old painters/masking tape that’s been up for a long time. First run a putty knife along the painted edge ( keep from pulling up any paint.) then take either a hairdryer, or a heat gun and blow heat atop the tape. This will activate the adhesive, and make it easier to remove. Another thing, if you find your roll of painters/masking tape is old, and shreds when pulling a length off the roll. Throw the whole roll in the microwave for 15 seconds, and it’ll restore the tape.

You've chosen the right color for your bathroom which brighten and makes it look roomy. Love the subway tile on the wall as well as the small octagon/hexagon on the floors. The step in tile into the shower just adds a dimension to the whole bathroom. You're right about curtain versus the glass door, actually you can move freely with curtain. I don't usually comment, but had to compliment your nice bathroom.

Great job Spencer on the tile. I know how you feel about tiling. I hate it too. Won’t do it again. After 15 years of a totally tiled mosaic bathroom, I tore it out ( floor to cold in winter even in Florida). Grouting corners are easier if you put the grout in cake decorating bag. Hope that helps in the other bathrooms. Stay happy.

I would use glass for the walk in shower and curtains with tub enclosures. Just my personal preference and easier to keep water in the shower with you instead of on the floor. Looks great. Recommend caulk at each seam where the walls meet and not grout. We had the grout start cracking on us and we had to scrape it all out and put in caulk.

Someone I know has a small bathroom with a glass covered shower, but the whole shower covering can be folded inwards so that the shower area becomes open and part of the bathroom. The whole floor was also made so that all the water on it flowed into the shower drain if anything got on the floor and the folding glass had this odd fiber looking band where it met the floor and that kept the shower water away from the rest of the small bathroom when showering. It was so well made that it is a memory that stayed with me.
I even asked about it and it worked because every part of the floor had a water barrier and if you put a marble on the floor it slowly rolled towards the shower drain. I've never seen anything like it before or since. They also used this cute trick with small tiles that was made so that it almost looked part of a beach were only the bottom parts of the shower walls was had the tiles.
It was one of the cutes bathrooms I had ever seen up to then, but I know the same idea has been used other place too, due to the available room size.

Nice job Spencer, i have done alot of tiling and i have to say your first job was A1 i have some very good advice on how my wife keeps our tiled shower sparkling clean with no scrubbing. She mixes two items and puts it into a spray bottle and sprays the entire shower once a week and lets it stay on the wall until the next shower or wait an hour or so and then uses the hand sprayer to rinse down everything thoroughly. It removes soap scum and prevents mildew and leaves all of the fixtures and glass sparkling. Her formula is half white vinegar and half BLUE Dawn dish soap. The vinegar has to be HEATED and placed in the spray bottle first and then add the dish soap. It only works with the Blue Dawn Soap. Give it a try, she no longer has to scrub our shower with bleach products. p.s I vote for tempered glass, it will stay clean with the soap and vinegar . Love what you guys are doing. Have watched from the beginning. All I can say is you have guts to decide to leave it all.

I've done several tile jobs in my own homes. I was told by a professional tile setter. Anywhere a wall meets another wall or floor or tub you should always use caulk not grout in that area. Our tile-ready shower pan base came with a 3 part epoxy to adhere the tile to the base. It was Part A resin, Part B catalyst, and a part C filler powder to thicken it. Once our marble tiles were glued down with this I think you would need a jack hammer to get them up once it cured.

The shower looks fantastic and you’re right, the grout was the icing on the cake! Also, so glad you got lots of 🌧 rain! I think you’ll find over time glass will be the better choice, you can enclose it 3/4 of the way and leave the rest open. So easy to keep clean and have water stay in the basin!

We did our's with a 2/3 glass wall and it works fine, no splash at the back or over the sill. Its also easier to clean as there is no tracks to trap moisture and mold. And if you want to be fancy it could be etched with a nice design eg dolphins or seahorses (?)

1000% better with the grout wow. I was not a fan of that tile the whole time you were doing it but the grout makes it looks so much nicer in there. Because of your curb's tile design it would be wise to put two coats of grout sealant on it. Add one coat two months after finishing the shower, and the next two to four months later. It may sound like overkill, but the deep soaking of sealant will give the tile longevity.
I also highly recommend getting a curved shower rod. The three inch (or so) outward bend not only creates a more spacious area, it controls the curtain's thermal wind flap by making the middle press against the curb. The air flows in from the edges instead, making it mix with the steam before it gets to you.
A clear or mostly clear vinyl shower curtain is also a good option to make the shower less closed in and sitting beside a closed curtain not feel blocked in. I first discovered this because I had rescued a cat that would always worry, shout and try to rescue me when she couldn't see me in the shower. At present I 'm using a vinyl curtain (from BB&B) with bamboo stalks printed on it up to the five foot level. The middle of the print is thick with leaves and the ends sparse with stalk for half a foot. I also find it easy to take a shower and wipe it down with a squeegee to prevent water spots. I just pin the bottom with my foot and scrape down.
The place is looking great! Bye.

  • @nancep7043
    @nancep7043 2 роки тому +6

The shower came out perfect looks great and gives it a clean look. Think about putting in half a glass wall so you can see thur. It’s instead of having 2 sliding doors you’ll have only 1 stationary door so the water doesn’t get out. It will keep it looking clean by clean I mean it won’t have water spots like a shower curtain gets after awhile.

For the second bathroom, soak the tiles in water for around 30 minutes (depending on the type of the tiles) before installation which helps the tiles absorb the mortar after which you should pour water on them every morning for a couple of days to avoid mortar shrinkage.

Shower Floors bigger tiles always work better , I always bigger trowel joints on Floors then I would have plenty of holding power. I will recommend a high end grout sealer use a good quality sealer that last 25 years and in a year do a second seal job. You will never have mold problems with mold . Good sealer will run 35-50.00$ a bottle. But it is well worth it in the end.

Great job on the tile, the next bathroom will go faster. But the to protect the floor lay down some painters clothe and a piece of plywood on top, this will protect the floor. Walking on the unprotected tile, you put pressure on the edge of the tile which will loosen them. The painter clothe keeps the plywood from scratching the tile and the plywood applies even pressure on the tile.

Mine were not hard to keep clean and I had two small children at that time . Good luck oh and I bought a heavy duty clear shower curtain for another bathroom. Also you could get the clear curtain with inside pockets that were mesh which ended up keeping tub toys out of the way and no gross moldy toys lol they dried rather quickly.

Not sure if you've already started grouting the tile yet or not, but take my advice and DO NOT buy quick setting grout. We used it when we remodeled our bathroom at home and the grout set before we had a chance to wipe it down with a sponge. We basically had to start over at that point. Just use the regular time setting grout and make sure that you work in sections and not try to tackle all the grouting at once. Quick setting grout is more designed for tiling professionals who work super quickly and know exactly what they are doing. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps!

I don't know if you guys keep an outdoor light on at night, but if you do, you might think of using those lights that have their own solar intake so the lights aren't pulling on your batteries. My friend who is off-grid changed out several lights to nature-powered lights, and it really made a difference to her battery life. Quick tip: one of the most common reasons as to why the tile didn’t properly adhere with the mortar is mostly because the mortar was drying up or “expiring”. Having had both my bathrooms redone I would recommend glass. Having clear glass allows the room to seem more spacious without the mess of curtains. With the difference in air temperature between in the shower and the rest of the room the curtains have a tendency to blow into the shower space while you are showering. This may not be a problem for you. Also if the curtain doesn't work you can always add a glass wall/door later. Personally I like the look of glass better.
