She would appear to be normal to her lover and family, but anyone who didn't know her will see a skeleton! Rather she knows it or not, her presence weakens her lover and will eventually kill him. There is a way to save them though, if a monk finds out and convinces him that she is a Honne-Onna her spell could be broken. The monk would instruct the man to stay inside and not let her in for several days, but each night she'll come back and beg to be let in, decaying more and more. Usually by the final day her lover can't take seeing her in pain anymore and let her in. The monk would come in and find him dead next to a corpse. Morbidly romantic eh? I interpereted the video as a hone onna as well! I also theorized that it’s about a prostitute who returned to her one true lover, because of the visual themes in the song. The elaborate kimonos and her being placed in a birdcage is symbolic of prostitution back in japan where they’d literally be displayed in cages like pretty birds. Also the meaning behind the children’s kagome kagome song that is played in the background can be interpereted to be about prostitution as well. The burned down house theory is really cool too! I can see how that ties in with the moths to the flames

I'm too tired right now to explain it fully, since if I tried, I'm sure that it would turn into an essay far too long for this page, but I believe that lady Wikipedia has a rather excellent article on the subject if you are interested. It's not the most reliable source, but from what I've seen, the page is pretty accurate and informative, and most of the other stuff you'll find online will make some reference to or even base their entire assumptions on either the Creepypasta of the same name or the Vocaloid song based off of it, so... yeah. Personally, I see the song being about someone who is trying to escape from something and hoping that they don't get caught.

Yeah...I like the vocaFX-r2 version better, not as creepy or as robotic sounding for the singing, but it's always good to see the originally song...
