Actually it wasn't ever pitched for serialization because the final cuts were stolen from his studio office. Someone out there had one of the rough cuts and posted it as far as am aware.
They were scared it'd offend Catholics. I'm Catholic and I wouldn't be offended. The badass priest trope should be explored more than the creepy pedophile priest trope.
Rodreguiez working with Disney on Star Wars....Judge is open to working with 20th Century. Maybe the internet could convince them to make this a series instead of unwanted King of the hill episodes?
He 100% wouldn't. Hank's not the type to watch stories. It's all make believe to keep ladies and kids busy, I'll tell you what! And indeed the series shows Peggy and Bobby watching the good Monsignor;
A pilot episode of a live action spin-off series based on Monsignor Martinez was developed, but never aired. Long considered lost, a VHS copy of it was discovered by a private collector in 2020, and was made public 1 year later. And here it is. Awesome and interesting!
I felt like a little kid watching a western show only better. And the music adding such a nice touch. This so would be the only thing my mom would ban me from watching, she being fully catholic. But whatever I would love to try watching this masterpiece of a possible show in secret. Such a charming lead actor, looking like he having so much fun, giving it his all.
I was expecting way less production value and bad acting but this is actually pretty well made! Hell if we can get reboots for Full House and The Simpsons can keep running with shitty quality why can't Fox or HBO pick up this idea and run with it? The main actor might even be the same age as Monsignor Martinez in King if the Hill;p
It does watch like a parody: cheesy as heck. But I suppose the in-universe show was cheesy also. So in a way, the cheesiness makes in more authentic. Maybe not suitable for TV, but true tot he source material.
As a huge King of The Hill fan Fox was crazy to pass this up, this genuinely feels like it would’ve done great after airing after Koth and especially in the 2000s. It feels just like when they watch the show on King of The Hill and I loved every second of it 😃
Absolutely freaking brilliant. I’ve been itching to see this for YEARS, and it’s so much better than I ever could have imagined, and it’s not even the final cut! What an absolute tragedy that this never proceeded to a full series. The lead is fantastic and David Herman (Buckley, Jimmy Wichert, among others) is a fun addition as the accidental sidekick.
How many others here were just waiting for Monsignor to say “Vaya con Dios?” 😂 Also, the lady on the plane looks like she’s had a case of the Mondays. 🤣
Airplane, Naked Gun, Top Secret, that is the potential here, like any pilot you can see the flaws that need to be worked out but dammit the base here was for a classic comedy. This was a missed opportunity. Thank you for posting it.
There were a few shows from this time period that failed or flopped that felt ahead of their time. This pilot is one of those. I feel like it would have been better received perhaps even a mere five years later. It still has massive potential too. I could easily see this being made today, either as a show or as a movie.
Who said it failed or flopped? The editing cut was stolen from his editing machine inside his studio, this was before digital so he didn't have a backup on the cloud somewhere. More than 20 years later a private collector found it and put it on UA-cam. This was actually approved hence the pilot. Fox had zero qualms about putting this show on the air.
This series would have been too good for this earth. That's why God secured the production rights. If you want to see it, convert to Catholicism so you can watch TV in heaven.
They did. That's literally what this pilot was, that was Fox picking it up and giving him the budget to shoot the pilot. This was in the 90s/early 2000s when editing was done manually (not on a computer) so he was storing it on his editing machine in his studio. Which got broken into. It was lost for more than 20 years. Eventually a private collector found it and uploaded here to UA-cam (that was as recently as 2020) Had it not been for that break in the show would have at least seen a season, depending on audience reception and ratings. Typically at the time non animated shows on Fox that weren't reality shows lasted about 3 seasons.
In fact the whole reason Son's of Tuscon was picked up was because of this debacle. Fox wanted a show for the Latin demographic. This was it but because it was stolen and Mike didn't want to resort and re edit everything and re schedule actors and recast (this was a lot harder back in the days when cameras were bigger and you needed entire crews to make a simple pilot and things were manually edited) Fox went with the "Latino Malcom in the middle show" and that's what we ended up getting. Perhaps for the best. This may have distracted from the peak seasons of KOTH. In terms of budget and focus.
I think is great idea that this other guy is witnessing all this insane world. It is what makes monsignor Martínez so special, it is highly unrelatable and he can be seen only from third perspective.
Politics. That and them being very conservative and having a priest kill people (despite them being drug dealers etc) they felt it would cause an uproar.
This is awesome I really wish this would have been a thing honestly I like it this is so awesome too bad we couldn’t get a whole season of this or a whole series of this
I have a feeling that Judge knew this would never go to series but he just thought it would be fun to make.
Yeah, it's more mysterious to have just the pilot. be4ing realistic a series of monsenor martinez would get boring in first season.
@@hermes5456 no it wouldnt
how could you know if it was never made

This would've been the hallmark of every Latino house in America along with Eddie Guerrero era Smackdown . Why FOX rejected this is a mystery.
