CONGO SQUARE IS OFF THE CHAIN!!!!!!!!! Im sorry that the people in the audience probably didnt appreciate it. R.I.P. LADY T, Forever loved and missed!!!!!!!!!!
All of the people here who insist on referencing color in their remarks, obviously did not pay any attention to Teena's statement: People are just people and your soul has no color. Teena has said in an interview after she received the R&B Pioneer Award that she just sings what is in her heart. She also said that there are opera singers who are black and sing like the angels, should they be told they can't sing opera because their style of music is not that of an Aretha Franklin? As Teena stated in the interview, people should be allowed to sing the music that reverberates from within. Those of you who have the Lady T album (CD) should reread the poem on the back. In the poem it states that we should label Campbell soup cans not people. That is what her life and music stood for, bringing people together.
Love how real she was and didn't let trends sway her..for those.commenting on her appearances, whatever! that makes her more lovable, she's not vain and remained true to her art.
Nunya Biznazz Well well well. This white boy loved teena since her first album dropped in 1979.. Met her 2xs and she was so sweet. Lady T is right. Soul had no colors. This woman sure did bring every race every person together. Let's stay strong Teena Marie fans and make the world a better place.. Peace to each and everyone of us.
when Teena first came out with Portuguese Love, nobody knew that she was white. When she says in this interview that the soul has no color, it really rings true. She has been our shining light in R&B that let us know that it was not just meant for Black people. Teena has been in my life since I was 16, and she is still the reigning queen of Funk, you may not agree with me. but that is the way I feel ! All hail the Queen Lady T!!!!!!!
Hands down one of the best voices ever. Her goal at 14 was to be the first white woman to chart on the Motown label. Lord knows she hit that goal many times, I think at 19 or 20 was the first. RIP you earned it Teena.
She must have been in her 50's here and she sings so great. Amazing voice still!!! Love to hear her, she puts so much passion into what she does. You can tell she really loves music. She is beautiful, "I was just born that way, soul has no color". She should have been a much huger talent. Why wasn't she?
Eve's Girls you are so sweet. I agree with you. Teena looked fine to me. These people talking crap about her looks etc. they are so immature. She was a beautiful and kind soul. I'm so glad I meet her twice she was so straight up and down to earth. Will always cherish my memories with and from Teena!! RIP lady T love you forever in a day!!!
say what?? That voice coming outta that Look? LOVE THIS!!!! I've definitely heard some of these songs but never knew she was a red head. Its crazy that this was LIVE!
It's thanks to artists like Teena that folks like me who look white but identify with the black community and have a fervent love for R&B/Soul music can express what we feel inside and worry less about judgment or skepticism. The soul transcends the bounds of race classification; as Teena put it, "rainbow colored people, happy as can be." She used her voice and her lyrics to express so many beautiful and powerful emotions; you know she felt every word she sang, especially her gorgeous ballads.
Few realize what she went through during these last few years of her life. In 2004 while sleeping in a hotel a large picture fell on her head. She had intermittent seizures the rest of her life. What a great artist...
Teena Marie passed away!?! Damn, how did I miss that...? Man, that's messed up! I remember the kids in my 'Hood all sayin' " I can't believe dat's a white girl sangin' like dat." It wasn't so much about a white girl singing, but how much soul this particular white girl was sangin' with. It's just like how she sounded, like a black chick sangin'. She got so much respect in the Hood it was all LOVE...! GOD Bless you Teena....!
Okay guys Tina Marie anniversary is coming up so we got a bumper music she passed away right after Thanksgiving so let's all give a tribute to our sister and play her music 12 26 2010 a day I'll never forget the day after Christmas I will make sure I play her music on Christmas Day and the day after
Perhaps one of the best and overlooked singers of all time... the notes she hits in the Rick James duet is nothing less than angelic...I haven't heard any female singer sing like that yet, except maybe Whitney...
If you sing “ sugar” in your music you are definitely invited to the barbecue. Lol. This woman was teaching us ..I hope many listen. Color really does not make up our souls. Love has to win or our purpose on this earth is futile. Prov 3, 5 and 6 ..RIP..🕊Miss Teena Marie....
I can't believe it's been almost 5yrs since she has been gone... I am a closet karaoke singer of her songs... Love her... She is one of my biggest inspirations.... I was asked to sing "Out on a limb" by a local band this weekend... I was honored to even be asked, and just hope I can do an ounce of justice to her... there will never be another....
I remember this little tiny white girl 1st came on Soul Train beautiful she was next time she came on ST she was "Poppin" I lmao omg go Teena go Teena. From the 1st song 79 she been my life every LP CD . She came Philly 1 time lovely night outdoor omg place was packed people eveywhere on the roofs trees fences parking lot seen her so many time one she pointed right at me and said "Hooo Everybody Get Up" omg. Love Teena my favorites are "You Make Like Springtime and the reprised" "The Ballard of Cradle Rob and Me" the best she the best and dont worry abiut the weight cuz she not still a Bad Bitch fine as hell
One more thing the media does suck. I remember when she died my niece called me and said look up on your computer Yahoo. So I did and one article said Ivory queen of soul dead at 54. My news stations in Boston did even report on it. We were getting big snow storms that day and that's what they reported on... Pissed me off because Teena deserved a lot of royalty. She was a very kind soul.. Miss hearing new music from her...
Continued... the chance to meet Teena two times when she came to Boston and she was a sweet heart. She took the time after her show to sign autographs and take picture with all her fans. She didn't act like these stuck up bitches known as Divas.. Everything Teena did was true blue from her beautiful kind soul. I get pissed off at the music industry as Lady T never got her props or credit she truely deserved. We true fans know what a special gift we had from Teena. My two boys are even into her.
So sad she died. She was NOT honored in anyway either. It was shameful the way her death was a side bar report. Grammy winner to boot. Brit's has a break down and it's the lead story. Makes no sense? Tina Marie was an amazing singer!
Very true, she deserved to be honored much more that she was. There should have been a major tribute to her on television. I know she was honored for an entire day on Philadelphia radio and her music was played continuously. I know I cried a lot that day and was in very deep shock to learn she had passed away. Most of us can say her music inspired us and got us through hard times. At least her daughter, gave us her final album 'Beautiful". It is still sad that we will never be dazzled by another Teena Marie album.
I don't get it? She wrote most of her music and was a real trail blazer way before a lot of the women in music today. Rianna COULD NEVER SING AS GOOD AS LADY T EVER!
George Hirst That's sad. Maybe because she didn't follow the sex sells bandwagon bullshit game. She did her own thing and stayed true to herself. Total respect to Teena Marie.
Searching for more coverage on her Memorial Service; very little (Very heartbreaking)(Very Very heartbreaking for Grand Loss) OF one of the World's Most GREATEST, BRILLIANT, AND UN REPLACEABLE MASS SINGER,SONGWRITER,MUSICIAN,RECORDING ARTIST THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEM AND HEAR. WHAT HAPPENED HERE. ANOTHER ONE OF GOD'S GIVEN TALENT SINGER. (BORN WITH NATURAL GIFTS) SHE NEEDED A WHOLE LOT MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOREE FROM MASS MEDIA. AND SHE EARN HER STATUS MUSICAL INDUSTRY TO BE HIGHLY RECOGNIZE . AGAIN WHAT HAPPENED HERE!!!!!!! LOOK AND YOU WILL SEE AND LISTEN AND YOU WILL HEAR; UNIQUE VOICE, MULTI TALENT AND TRUE LEGEND. OOH AND SHE WAS A FIT IN ANY COMMUNITY. SHE BLENDING THE WORLD IN PEACE AND HARMONY. R.I.P. BLUE EYE SOUL SISTER. YOU ARE HIGHLY MISS.
Nobody had the vocal range of TEENA. I think the industry just didn't get her so they more or less ignored her. But not her fans! They kept buying her records & loving her sound! Beautiful person, beautiful daughter.
Sherri may not have nailed every word whilst singing along from the sidelines but you can tell she had/has love for Lady T, a trailblazer indeed who identified with the black community, sang from deep inside, and didn't try to fit-in or cash-in. The race references may have caused her discomfort but the truth was she looked white yet specialized in R&B/Soul music, something the average white audience (such as those at the View that day) might not expect or comprehend; their loss, our treasure.
girl hosting don't know the words to any other song but LOVERGIRL acting like she's a big fan !! "...some of my old favorites..." watch girl's lips; she don't know the words !! Love Ya Lady T. you stayed true to yourself. you never sold out. that's why God called you home.
Poor crowd was probably thinking wait Martha Stewart is'nt gonna be here? Bless Teena for saying westside lady back on the block!!! I love when sherri say's Lady T TEENA MARIE!! Sherri a sista she know's whats's up...
@doubleolove I dont think Sherri meant anything negative by that but she did not word her love well. Teena set her straight though. Teena Marie has ALWAYS been about the music and it being UNIVERSAL in its beauty. That is just one of the things I loved about that woman. May she get the love and props she did not really get here on earth and may her music live on in history!
Rick James once said- "It's a shame her own people forgot her, because she is just as good as Streisand". Listen to these 3 songs and tell me he wasn't lying- "Sunny Skies", "Dear Lover", "How Can You Resist It?". I love Streisand, but Teena had an incredible range. Even with just a piano Teena delivered the song "Light", with the power of a gospel singer.
Rest in Peace Teena (I am sort of shocked)--I didn't know she had any health issues..it just goes to show that we can go at anytime (when GOD calls us)! my condolences! I will meet you in Heaven==soon!
Yup I taped it she did her thang as usual SHERRI was so excitied!!! Yup that is true teena said soul has no color that is just who she is!!! Love ya lady T you are the SHI**...LOL I bet half of those poeple there did not know who she was....HA HA HA but who cares we go to see the lady of soul...
Great performance by Lady T of course but what was up with those constant bad camera cuts to Sherri Shepard "jamming"? You can tell even Sherri's comment "Black People LOVE You" made Teena uncomfortable! RIP Lady T, I'll Miss You!
AND GUESS WHAT MILLIONS LOVED IT IM NOT STREET BUT I SURE GO THIER WHEN IM HAVING FUN AND DON'T MIND BUT THAT DON'T MAKE THE PERSON ITS THE SOUL THANK YOU AND SHE WAS FAMOUS PERSON WAS SO SWEET WITH A GENTLE SPIRIT AND I LOVED HER! WE DIDN'T LOOK AT COLOR LINE BUT SOME PEOPLE CAN'T HELP THIER SELF?
You know those people are gonna go and try return her Cd and get some Kenny G or something...ok let me stop!!! i was at the edge of my bed watching when LADY T was gonna do her THANG!!! Love at the start of the show when Whoppie said Sherri I know you are excitied about todays show!!! It was nice to see how much Teena meant to sherri cause she was acting just like I would if I got to introduce her or got to meet her cause when Sherri hugged her you can feel how she felt which was nice!!!
@patriciacarrasco Hey hey,, Relax there. I'm a white man 44 and I was into Teena Marie since 1979 Wild and Peaceful. Please don't put white or black in the mix. As Teena Marie has said many many many times it's not color it's what's in the soul. I love r&b since I was a young child.. I resent comments like this. I could say black folks don't know shit about heavy metal. I'm not into metal but I would never put color into any mix. I know alot about Teena and will always love her. I had the
NLuvWitKells Not true. A Lot of white people know who she is. Hell and Boston Massachusetts this radio station Kiss 108 Play Behind The Groove Square Biz and I Need Your Lovin almost every hour on the hour. Teena was a force not to be reckoned with. And as Teena Marie said Soul has no color.
@lp32862 OOh la la was one of her biggest hits and host girl didn't even know the words... "how you do this?" "black people love you?" wtf? Lady T is who she is. she never sold out. she was a real LADY. hostess girl is just reading what's on her cue card, pleeez. some of us are old enough to have heard her start. Lady T was annoyed with hostess girl on another clip here somewhere on youtube on her "exit interview" too. Respect the Lady !!!!!!!
@tigress1167 I don't hear that at all. Sheena had a good voice but Teena is so unique.. Was so pumped that they had Teena on the view. Miss her like crazy and still can't get over she is gone!! RIP Lady T!!!
AND HER A RICK AND AREA'S SOLD OUT LIKE 2 DAYS IN ROW, ALL OVER THE COUNTRY WHEN THIER DUEOS CAME OUT AND STAYED THE TOP CHARTS FOR ALMOST A YEAR, PLEASE LIKE AGAIN THEY SOLD OUT AREA'S BACK IN THE DAY! I REMEMBER SHE WAS REAL FAMOUS WITH SOLD AREA'S ALL YEAR! AND THATS A KNOWN FACT WHERE WERE YOU ? I REMEMBER IM QUIT SURE SHE'S DONE TALKED ABOUT AND THIS AIN'T NOTHING IM GUESSING ABOUT IT WAS NONE FACT! SO WHAT ARE TALKING ABOUT? IM COMPLETELY LOST?
CONGO SQUARE IS OFF THE CHAIN!!!!!!!!! Im sorry that the people in the audience probably didnt appreciate it. R.I.P. LADY T, Forever loved and missed!!!!!!!!!!
Shoot. Passion Play CD, Emerald City CD, Robbery CD, Naked to the World CD. I can keep going. LTee in my blood. RIP Tee.

She's was 1 of a kind! and, you're soo right!!
+Eve's Girls That's right. I don't care what she looked like. She could sing and she gave it all up each time she performed.
Absolutely!
Amen!
12 26 2010 Jesus received a beautiful angel with a whole lot of voice and a whole lot of love and soul
Love Teena Marie forever ! “ Soul has no color “
This white boy knows all about Teena! SOUL does not have no COLOR! RIP Teena!
Dennis Taylor me too, Dennis. I'm a white girl and having always loved Teena.
This Alamo City Hispanic has no color. Love me some Tee. A once unmistakably real icon, the legend, the Ivory Queen of Soul. Teena Marie.

Wow. That is sad. I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.😥
Thanks. I tell ppl that same factual story that Teena Marie shared once in an interview about how the pic fell on her head while in an hotel.

LOL! Yea, the audience was whack! But, Sherri sure was thrilled! :)
R.I.P Lady T.

you're not going to find any, the media wasn't allowed inside Liberty Hall for the service. TV One and BET were outside, that was it.
Love love love Teena Marie! Sherri Sheppard...not so much! But this is about Lady Tee....I digress.
Shoot for that matter, Whoopi, Joy(less), Sunny(less) all of them libtards up there.
Well thanks to Sherri she fought to let Teena come in the show!! Sherri wads a friend and a fan of Teena’s!!!!
Nobody had the vocal range of TEENA. I think the industry just didn't get her so they more or less ignored her. But not her fans! They kept buying her records & loving her sound!
Beautiful person, beautiful daughter.
The woman shines! You can still see they hot woman in the moves she makes. She puts some of the pop stars to shame these days. She has no age. R.I.P.
I love you lady T
Long live The Ivory Queen of Soul ❤️❤️
GOOD OL LADY TEE.
RIP " Vanilla Chock"
Even though she picked up so much weight and was having problems her voice did not fail her.
dycusburgkid Who Cares she gained weight! So negative! Most people gain weight as they age!
She had a child and in this video she was (post?) menopausal.
Sherri may not have nailed every word whilst singing along from the sidelines but you can tell she had/has love for Lady T, a trailblazer indeed who identified with the black community, sang from deep inside, and didn't try to fit-in or cash-in. Lady T looks like she could've come from a PTA meeting. But then she turns on the Funk like nobody's business.
Amazing.
Rest in Peace Teena (I am sort of shocked)--I didn't know she had any health issues..it just goes to show that we can go at anytime (when GOD calls us)! my condolences! I will meet you in Heaven==soon!

some of us are old enough to have heard her start.
Lady T was annoyed with hostess girl on another clip here somewhere on youtube on her "exit interview" too. Respect the Lady !!!!!!!
