- "Square Biz" is a song by American pop/R&B/soul singer, Teena Marie. The song was released as a single in 1981 from the album It Must Be Magic. It would go on to become one of Marie's signature songs.
The song interpolates a rap verse from the Sugarhill Gang's 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight".
Cover versions and appearances in media
In 2002, a new version of this song, titled "Hollywood Square Biz", was used as the theme to the popular game show Hollywood Squares from 2002 to 2004.[2]
In 2002, En Vogue performed a cover of the song on their concert DVD, Live in the USA.
Missy Elliott uses an interpolation of a verse from Square Biz in Ciara's 2004 hit single, "1, 2 Step".[3]
The Firm's "Firm Biz" contains a sample based on the song featuring En Vogue's Dawn Robinson from the group's 1997 album The Album.
"Real Love" by Master P featuring Sera-Lynn, 2002
In January 2011, The Foreign Exchange performed a piece of the song during their Authenticity Tour in Europe.
Chart performance
The song managed to peak at #3 on Billboard's Black Singles, becoming Marie's highest peak on the chart at the time. The song managed to peak at #12 on Billboard's Club Play Singles, while performing moderately on Billboard's Pop Singles, peaking only at #50, becoming her second single to chart on the Pop Singles chart.
2024 anyone?

This lady didn’t get the flowers she deserved for the Soul music she put in our lives🥰

💯
i concur
I agree. I thought her and folks like pink and Madonna did a. Halfway decent job at RnB and hiphop tracks!
@@rvegas81 you lost us with Pink and Madonna lol
First person to ever "Rap" in their own RnB/Pop song, now so many artists have rappers on their RnB joints. She was a legend and a pioneer.
Ugh Teena was ONE OF A KIND. Adore the level of the talent that she possessed.
Not true. You can make a case for Blondie. Teena was still next level, tho.

😂 FACTS AND ONLY
Indeed she was. I still don't think there is anyone out there who can touch her today. If u can think of one let me know sister
Who was the last?
right, because being white or black has nothing to do with talent lol
@Kwuan Brinson, you might want to look up Lisa Stansfield on the Appollo, and it's more a matter of talent than race ✊😉
She was a white woman with a black soul!!! Love you so much Teena my mother’s favorite artist of all time. 🙏🏾
We don't war against flesh and blood...this heffa had THAT soul spirit! As a horn player musician...this bass player is at least top twenty ALL TIME great on one song.
@@DjDemp race and ethnicity really be messing yall up huh
She grew up in a black neighborhood singing in a black church.
@@DjDemp Cuban or Dominican can't be white too? Just american??
@@DjDemp False! Check your facts!!
She deserved better. She has an incredible voice.
I agree, she was so underrated
Yes but I think she is lip singing here.
@@premierproperties240 so what if she was lip synching??? It's not a bad thing. There are times when lip synching is done so that the quality of the performance is more pleasing to the audience. No, you don't want someone to lip synch at a concert if you paid for tickets, but during a TV performance or award show it's sometimes done because of time constraints. Get over it!!!
@user-um6lz9hg3r so much emotion. Just said yes in agreeance and then notated it looked like lip singing. I didn't state am opinion either way.
@@kellyf5004 Most definitely!
Here I am…68 years old and dancing on my back porch like a young girl again. She was so talented and so underrated. She was downright awesome!
🕺
The only Rock and Roll Hall of Fame oversight bigger than Teena’s exclusion is that of Rick James. She didn’t play an instrument in this performance, but she COULD have. She played as many instruments as Prince. FACT.
She was an all around superstar. The true definition of a triple threat.
Why Prince respected her immensely!!
She did NOT. Stop it. She played guitar and piano. Show me evidence of her playing drums and bass.
@@chrisgambaro-vega9504 why is there always a negative Nancy in the comments can you just come and enjoy the music and the talent we always have to stand out in the comments with your negative energy
Teena's ultimate instrument was her voice.

yep, and the drum beat connected with this in very organic form
She could sing her ass off!!! This song is a classic 🔥🔥🔥 R.I.P Teena 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Listen to her and Rick James sing their song, Happy! It’s my favorite! And if you have the time listen to Ricks song , Hollywood was the joint when I was in my 20’s in the military. Hollywood is his song telling his story about leaving Buffalo, NY to go to California where he became a major superstar! I love him and I love Teena. ❤
She's definitely a soul sistah
Oh yeah!
I remember how shocked some people were when they found out she was white. She had so much soul and in her sound, everyone thought she was a sista. Lol.😄

She’s such a Classic!! Love her!!’🌅🎼🥂🎉
I heard that brother,,,but back in the daze nobody really cared just as long as you were talented..You had KC and the sunshine band ,average white bad, wild cherry and so on and they were definitely funky and talented!

So true!!! She up there with Patti Gladys Anita Baker. She belongs with them all and They will tell u that.

Yes she does
Lady T deserves a biopic I would love to see that.
I think she was one of the first to use rap in an r&b song before it became a trend. A true legend..miss you Lady T! My older brother used to have the biggest crush on her
Yes she was , I never heard a female R&b Rapp on her joint before Lady T did it and I honestly feel like she never got credit for that .
I think Debbie Harry/Blondie preceded her with Rapture by just a few months.
No one could or will ever compare to Lady T. She had a lane all her own. R.I.P.

It can’t be faked either. Lady T was a real one. Gifted’ talented and beautiful. She bridged a gap between black and white that shows that many of us have soul it just needs to be recognized and appreciated. Teena deserved so much more in terms of recognition and appreciation. RIP🕊...

🤘🏾🔥Love Teena’s sound🔥. She bridged jazz funk, disco, soul with a sprinkle of rap. Because growing up in London and Uk in the 70’s and 80’s was a melting pot of music and we didn’t care what colour an artist was or anything else about them accept that the artist could get a party started. Teena did that every time. She had a Black soul which was good enough for me.
100% facts 👌🏿🎤🎹😎
Rest in peace teena Marie Love you
Man that bass line is in my veins that funk can't be stopped no matter what music that they bring in 2021
