This was excellent.. Thank you, Hot 97, for providing a platform for the oral history of Hip Hop culture to be documented. More stuff like this please!
DJ Red Alert is the greatest DJ in Hip-Hop History! Period! Over Flash, Herc, Hollywood, Mr. Magic, etc... I feel sorry for the younger generation who didn't experience what Flex was trying to explain about Friday & Saturday nights at 9:00 PM. And then about '87 Red introduced Dance Hall/Reggae to the Hip-Hop generation so effortlessly till about 10:00 PM before he started going in on pure adulterated Hip-Hop for the rest of the night. I knew it wouldn't last at like 13, 14 years old. I knew that the powers-that-be would close down the doors on what I consider the most unfiltered time in Hip-Hop. YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
much respect Red Alert you and Chuck chillout are the reason why I started to dj when I was 12 years old I got my first mixtape kick Capri in 1989 and and man I was Off to the Races he showd me that i could do that and not be on the radio much respect to Grandmaster Flash all the DJs out of Boogie Down
Daammm,.... I wish that Red would have got on the tables too. FMF must of had some major arthritis pain going on this day cuz he sounded like doo-doo to put it politely. and I know damn well he can still rock 'em. Hell I still have old cassettes of him on KISS.
Flex is that dude to me, the one that I idolised. His energy, I actually like everything about him on the radio. I know many people like to critique him and challenge his skill which is ridiculous to me. He is very skilled and he is the excitement about the music he's about to play.
I remember when Eiht and I visit Red Alert at the radio station promoting Comptons Lynchin (Remix) back in 1991 in New York and called me a bum my eyes lit up and he said what's wrong I said in L.A. niggaz would go off but the way you said it I had to laugh. Red Alert was straight comical with hip hop excitement.. You felt his passion for the art.
KRE...Approval.!! From 1978 to Now Some of the Hottest Dj also came from the Midwest. Dayton & Cincinnati Ohio had that Funk Sounds transferred to Rap. We also Push the culture overseas in Germany where the early 80’s Dj’s was buying records out NY. and mailed to us to keep pushing the culture. I Solute to the NY.Dj’s and rappers But we All have a Place in the Movement. Great Work Flex keeping the Dj’s in the Front.!!
This is interesting I sort of was listening to radio like KRE with Philip Richardson and I seen his sound system down the street, so me and Funk Flex got something in common radio deejays influenced me a lot.
Back in the Day I Used To DJ With Cassette Tapes And Be Creating A Mixshow On A Blank Cassette With 2 Tape Decks With Vinyl Records!!!! That’s How I First Got Started To DJ Back In The Late 80s & Early 90s
Besides pirate radio, Military members serving internationally overseas was receiving mixtapes recorded on the dual cassette radio of Dj Red Alert goes bezerk & Mr. Magics rap attack. Guys on base waiting for cassettes during mail call wondering what they played that week.
Red Alert equals Hip Hop legend, I know that and I from the U.K! Thanks to Internet I can enjoy his Old Skool radio mix tapes!! When I was young in the 80s I never knew who Red Alert was but I recognised his influence on some Hip Hop records and his name in the credits on the back of the album covers!
Preach RED....💯....Let em know.... that's how you pay that homage...Ppl won't know where they're going if they don't know where we've been.... BWC4LIFE 💯
Epic boss on boss the UK stands up and salutes big dog record pool style you get me flex UK Swift say's so big up my brother Tim Westwood for putting me on flex all them years 🔴 alert just epic pioneer 2 living Icons in hip hop thank you both and thank hot 97 DJ swift south London signing out
Red alert man I got mix tapes from him I recorded from 98.7 kiss FM . New York.. I agree with red alert DJ's today are more lazy rely on the computer more . Back in our day it was skills timing.
Yeah, it was subpar to todays standards but remember these guys were DJIng and scratching in the late 1980's, they are old school legends, their respect doesn't come from their skill now but from what they did back then when things were much harder.
D-One Dope DJs stay relevant. Jazzy Jeff, Mixmaster Mike, Qbert, Cash Money, etc. They all didn't stop learning. A great DJ continues to learn and progress. Being good at what used to be done, is just another way of saying 'you used to be good'.
Of course, you are right, can't argue with that, but all those names are technical and DMC quality DJS and Flex is a Radio DJ wich caters to a different audience 'no one' listening to radio is expecting to ear super crisp 3 click flares or autobahn scratches so he focused in other areas. Remember that there are many types of DJs not just the scratch skilled ones, some for example get recognized for the mixtapes they put out and not actually the technical skills and that doesn't make them worst DJs because of that.
D-One not true. jazzy jeff, cash money, scratch, and a ton of others do radio and tours. And mixtape "djs" are absolutely the worst. Lol. They aren't djs in the least. Whookid and Clue are prime examples of that and I've told Whookid his trash to his face. He was mad I went on before him and killed it. His ass can't dj at all. He talks and plays all G Unit tracks from a CD. Zero respect for people who call themselves a DJ but don't bother to progress. Grandmaster Flash used to have me come over and do studio work for his set. He never stopped learning.
Don't get me wrong i agree with you to a certain extent but i just don't have such a extreme point of view. To do radio here and there and be a full time radio personality are different things, remember that DJing was here way before scratch & turntablism. Whookid is terrible i agree but Clue's contribution to the culture is undeniable altho he is just plain annoying. I know some old head funk/soul DJs with 20k+ records, true melomaniac's and they can't blend 2 records if they're life depended on it, doesn't make them "not real" DJs in my eyes, they just focused in other things.
I started with straight vinyl in 1990 with two Gemini DJ q1200's and a Gemini mixer so yeah I really had to work back then to learn for you young cats find next set with a set of technics sl-d1's at the torque is very low you have to push the record when you're scratching so I understand. the art form oh man i dont miss them days of carrying crates and all that equipment
Dam flex got no better from the early 90s old ass drag scratch from the tunnel days , let’s not say age Billie bushe, Mel star are nice and they are up in age
i came up with dj n before dj software came out i always wanted to be a dj ever since i was like 8 yo i wasnt fortanate to own a dj set growing up if thats why im not good at scratching on time i could blend the hell out of a song but scratching not if i was to have a dj set lets say at around 11 12 13 yo i would of been really good at it by now
