A giant parrot, hallucinating Jasmine, and Casper the Friendly Genie? It's another Disney remake alright, and despite this one being a crowd pleaser, the Nostalgia Critic is anything but amused as he reviews 2019's Aladdin remake.

Aladdin is a 2019 American musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who co-wrote the screenplay with John August, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1992 animated film of the same name, which is based on the eponymous tale from One Thousand and One Nights. The film stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar, as well as the voices of Alan Tudyk and Frank Welker.

Pretty sure that the giant parrot Jafar turned into was supposed to be a Roc, the legendary bird from Arabian mythology that was so big it could carry elephants away in its talons, but ok.

"The film has the *disadvantage* of not being animated."
PLEASE SAY THAT LOUDER FOR THE DISNEY EMPLOYEES IN THE BACK!
I always thought this should be a common sense, that's why remake takes time and hard work for.......however they seem to misunderstood animation and story details, just like change the scene for "Can you feel the love TONIGHT" from night to afternoon
Can I get a freaking "amen" to this proof of wisdom ?
*AMEN !*

Say louder
the reason why they didn't make the whole movie bollywood is simple.
It was too big a risk. and disney doesn't make remakes to experiment or explore new possibilities.
That might have had a significant impact and broke a new record. That would have been frigging awesome!
Edited by Sans Handlebars.
They could have had some awesome dance sequences and actually done something interesting and new with this if they took a page out of Bollywood instead of trying to copy animation into live action as usual.
Well that and the fact that bollywood is Hindi film, not middle eastern.
What would Disney have to lose, anyway? They have more money than Eugene Krabs!
You know, it's not even a risk! This movie was gonna make money no matter what! Why not have fun with it? Why make it so bland?
"How did you get through the guards?"
"I snuck past."
"All 48 of them? Even the ones that eat fire?"
Okay, I can't be the only one who wants to see the guards that eat fire
Not gonna lie: I wanted to see that too. Now THAT would’ve been interesting!
Agrabah has some really talented guards! Did someone tell the Ringling Bros about these guys?
Am I the only one who remembers characters doing that in the original?
@@captainvader921 I remember a guy swallowing a sword and nearly dying when Abu yanked it out of his throat, but I can't remember any firebreathers in the original Aladdin
Also, don’t forget: in the opening credits of Aladdin ( 1992 ) there was a guy who blew fire out of his mouth.
I actually think Will Smith did fine as the genie when he’s allow to be Will Smith, not Will Smith pretending to be Robin Williams. Friend Like Me is a great example. The genie is a character that needs to be a big personality and both Robin Williams and Will Smith are big personalities in very different ways.

“The film assumes you’ve seen the original so it doesn’t have to try as hard to make an impact” Best quote to describe why these movies are so stupid! Screw the new generation that maybe saw this before the original, to Disney, you are out of the loop!
Why screw the kids?
Tarfiel Archelone he’s saying that Disney is screwing over the kids, the whole reason Disney says they’re doing these is to “introduce them to a new generation” yet they cheaply dull things down because they assume that you’ve seen the original and don’t need to see it again. It’s unfair to children who haven’t seen the originals as they miss out on funny energetic moments.
I mean you’re never going to get the magic of animation in live action but they still dull down good moments that could be good in live action since they think we’ve seen them already
these kids are having a tough childhood
Honestly, (and I say this as someone who isn't really a Disney fan), I'd say that it's bad parenting as much as anything else if the newer generations are shown these live action remakes before being shown the animated versions......
@@Gamer3427 More like bad movie-making to make remakes "for the kids" that require you to have seen the original. If it's supposed to be an introduction for a new generation, it shouldn't rely on prior knowledge to be enjoyable.
Disney: we are making another remake of another movie!!

On one hand I've got no problem with the casting, remember cinderella 1997?.
On the other hand... How come we, black folks get role in European folklore (Princess and the frog) yet when it comes to other culture Disney actually do some research
@@etheron1235 I would like to see this movie than all the remakes combined
In my opinion I thought Dalia was useless because the whole point was that Jasmine was lonely and that she didn't have anybody so that made her want to get out the palace more and jasmine had no friends except the tiger
Exactly. The whole point is that she and Aladdin both felt lonely and only had their pets as friends. Aladdin with Abu and Jasmine with Rajah.
Dan Gurney THANK you
Thank you! Animated Jasmine even says it out loud to her dad that she never had any real friends except for Raja. You didn't even need Aladdin to confirm it out loud. The change in scenery, orchestra and lyrics during the One Jump Ahead Reprise showed us how alone and isolated Aladdin is from the rest of the kingdom.
"The disadvantage of not being animated." Thank you! It's frustrating how many people equate live action as superior to animation in every way when it's not. They're different and some movies are better suited to one or the other.
Yeah.
Like, imagine if some of the Pixar films were live action?
Like Up, CoCo, the Incredibles. We wouldn't be able to get the movement, speed, goofy proportions that animation can give us.
Like with the live action Cat in the Hat
@@nylalady3509 We do not mention that film.
@@SukoYote LOL Forgive me!
People seem to think that the original was animated because of primitive technology. Hand-drawn animation wasn't anywhere near an undeveloped medium at the conception of Aladdin!
People can't fathom that if they originally had the choice between live-action and animated, they would have a strong case for animation for artistic possibilities alone.

Ah yes. Jasmine, the Disney princess who in the animated version had absolutely no trouble constantly saying exactly what she thought about people and her general situation; who would tell off her father, her father's right-hand man and (as far as she was concerned) a total stranger for objectifying her *multiple times* ; who thought absolutely nothing of going after whatever she wanted regardless of what anyone said or told her what she should be doing... Yes, she *really* needed "fixing" and given a song about not being silenced. God knows she was just *so* passive before...
🙄
I thought she was more of a strong character in the animated version too IMO, But what really bugs me is that in the original is that she doesn't want to be forced into marriage but wants to find love however in the remake she's willing to accept Jafar's forced proposal when he threatens her father, it's like they didn't re-watch the original before making this movie.

Was hoping Critic was going to point out that the Cave of “Wonders” was incredibly underwhelming. The animated version was literally glowing yellow due to the amount of treasure.
Also the Whole New World song. The entire song is like they're driving through a tunnel.
The treasure room in Hamunaptra from the Mummy was more impressive.
It also felt really small. Like the original wasn't just filled with an insane amount of treasure that was so bright and inviting, it felt vast.

My problem with this new Aladdin that the Critic should've criticized was that this Aladdin was not only selfish of not wanting to free the Genie, he was clumsy and scared.
The original one was more caring and brave, he was tough himself to find a way to win Jasmine's heart, he fought Jafar as a giant snake and when he was helpless and powerless he still wasn't afraid and came up with another way to defeat Jafar.
😧 Especially when Aladdin was ambushed, kidnapped by the gaurds, and tossed into the ocean. Aladdin still fought and didn't give up trying to get to the lamp. He doesn't quit fighting even when the odds are against him.
Starkid’s “Twisted” is a much better “Aladdin” remake than the “Aladdin” remake.
Amen, please?
Id rather watch the Thief of Bagdad 1940

HE FUCKED A TIGER
This is all your fault jafar
Twisted is legit my favorite theatre production of all time. It's absolutely brilliant.
"What remains of a man when that man is dead and gone? Only memories and stories of his deeds will linger on. But what if a man's accomplishments aren't in the tale they tell? Are the deeds that go unheralded his legacy as well? If a war breaks out tomorrow, we'll all have hell to pay. Why protect my reputation? I'm a dead man either way. How will they tell my story? How will they tell my tale? Will anybody even care? The question, then, is whether tis nobler in the mind to be well-liked but ineffectual, or moral but maligned. I'll never be a hero all the citizens adore, but if I hide to save my life, what has my life been for? What has my life been for? The road AHEAD MAY TWIST. But I WILL NEVER SWERVE! I'll GIVE THEM ALL THE UNSUNG ANTIHERO THEY DESERVE! I've NOTHING left to lose, so the only path to choose is TWISTED! Let them twist my words, let the people scorn me. Who cares if no-one will ever mourn me? Let them BURY THE SIDE OF THE STORY they'll NEVER LEARN! LET THE TRUTH BE TWISTED! LET MY LIFE BE TWISTED! I'LL BE TWISTED, IT'S MY TURN!"
Honestly Jasmine's song had me SO DAMN CONFUSED in the theater.
"Wh- What, is SHE magic now? Thanosing everybody away? What the heck??"

RIGHT it came out of nowhere like bruh this is the climax and you’re singing about girl power, I WANNA SEE THE STORY
I think we all had issues with the random girl power bits that broke the momentum in a movie that's was fun, but that's all.
Its in her head. This is how internal dialogue is often handled in stage productions, where they can't cut away to a different scene the same way you can in a movie.
she doesn't even have the gauntlet and stones
It was her imagination
That whole Jasmine was the Genie twist. I'm going to say right now, that could have worked. Maybe genies originated in Sherabot, and Jasmine's mother was a genie, maybe her mothers bracelet was the manacle from when she was a Genie and Jafar killed her when he learned she was free and couldn't grant his wishes. That's why he's so focused on Sherabot, if the mother came from there, then there must be other magical artifacts or knowledge. And all the years of repression stopped Jasmine from tapping into her powers, but when Jafar takes over and she sees the Genie, she realizes her mother was a genie and Jasmine, by that lineage gives her the ability to become a Genie, so Jafar uses his sorcery to try and force her to give up her humanity and become his wife, giving up not only her freedom as a woman, but as a human.
It acts as a way to show how the repression from things like stereotypes or gender roles can harm a person and puts Jasmine's desire for freedom in a much more literal battle, not to mention it provides an interesting story about how Genies come to be. But more importantly it provides an interesting moral that I don't know how to quantify, so I'll explain. Jasmine wants to be treated equally to a man (in that she wants the right to rule). In becoming a Genie, she would have to power to change things, but she would be at the mercy of anybody's whim. She could have ultimate power and in doing so the right to rule, but she chooses not to because if she can't rule on her own terms, she won't do it. Even as I type this I can't fully explain my thought process, so I'll just leave it here.
It would be an actually strong and interesting female character with nuance. And an interesting story with nuance (throwing a woman in power is not a magical key to heaven, just like overpowering a female character doesn't magically make her a good female character, etc.) It could actually take gender issues head on instead of...this half ass attempt Hollywood has been pulling for marketing.
It would build on the universe too. I totally get it!
I read and understood all of it. I wholeheartedly agree with this idea
Cool idea
Interesting, I agree
Very nice!
That moment at 8:20 is some of the greatest animation ever. In one single shot, without a single word by Aladdin, you get so many complex emotions in a row, you can even see him doubting himself for a moment.
I appreciate how Will Smith really tries to make his genie his own, but this movie panders way too much to our nostalgia.
Just a mild note on one thing he didn't touch on--
We first meet Jasmine unintentionally stealing from a merchant to feed a kid. In the animated it's believable because she's sheltered and it's obviously her first time out. But in this one... this Jasmine wants to be FUCKING SULTAN. Her straight-up taking it from the table and then being surprised when the merchant gets angry that she has no money makes no sense. This Jasmine is well-read and can read maps and should know all about money and rules of society. Why would she casually take a product and think it'd be okay???
I get they'd want to keep the intro of both Jasmines the same, but they're different characters, and it just seemed so incredibly off for this one.
I also thought that she'd mention improving the state of the poor once she's in charge, since Aladdin and poor kids and shit. But it wasn't focused on.
Imagine if Aladdin took Jasmine to her mother's country Shirabad on the magic carpet ride. It'd be romantic, a meaningful gesture, and we would actually see this country that's apparently so important. And maybe we'd actually learned how she was killed.
And why would she leave home without any money? Surely she gets an allowance or something?
Yeah must admit. I think it would have worked better if she knocked apples onto the ground for the kids and got caught doing it or something. This scene undercut her character from the start in the remake. It's like she's smart and savvy and can run a nation, but doesn't seem to understand the concept of money and payments.
I think it would make more sense for her to simply pay for the apple and Aladdin somewhat seeing through her disguise. Then Aladdin would try to maybe swindle some money from her only to fall for her and resume the original story.
God bless. Thank you. My thoughts exactly))
Considering how much Jafar hated the country Jasmine's mom came from, he totally killed her

Yeah, it kind of does. Like, the Sultan isn't shown to be a dictator running on fear and oppression. His guards aren't automatons, forced to obey his orders, they can choose not to obey.
It's actually a very nice example of how Jafar's short-sighted lust for power betrays him: he wastes a wish claiming a title he didn't need. Once he's the most powerful sorcerer in the world, he could just MAKE the Sultan abdicate to him. But no, he demands someone bestow the title on him...without earning it, so it doesn't get him anything: "Cool, you're the Sultan, me and the rest of the guards are going to rebel."

The Disney Dark Ages was more like the 80s, at least for their box offices.
@@welcometothemetaverse2523 all the movies coming back as shambling husks of their former selves hungering for the cash of the living
As far as live action goes, maybe. As for animation, not at all

Nah, they probably think it's fine
Crazy Crew these remakes are just dumb as they live and I’ll never watch these remakes ever
Lol funny thing is I have not seen the new Aladdin....I had to see how the Critic destroys it. Did it with beauty and the beast, and who knows what else
They where thinking 💰💴💵💶💷💸💳💱💲
Crazy Crew that’s what Doug asked after they made their “review” of The Wall and got a 2.3 on IMDb
I'd imagine Robin Williams is rolling in his grave he is the Best Genie from the original Aladdin Will Smith's Genie in the 2019 Aladdin remake is Okay But NOT That Great
Doug: Will Smith looks scary!
Cypher Raige: DENIED! SIT DOWN!
"The remake is taking advantage of the original's focus so they don't have to try as hard." The MO of ever Disney remake past and future.
Fun Fact: The only reason Donkey Kong Country exists is because Nintendo wanted to compete with the Aladdin video game. No joke!!!!!
"Oh my God she was the genie all along, now that's a twist this movies needs!"
if you mean the story teller fun fact THAT WAS CANON IN THE ORIGINAL they just dropped it from the movies it's been confirmed by the writers that the lamp seller at the start of the original disney's aladdin is in fact you guessed it genie
@Zak Strayder i think that was the idea
"How come he don't want me man?"
It almost feels wrong to sound clip from that heartwrenching scene in Fresh Prince....
I ain't gonna lie: in my opinion, I think Will Smith did a great job with the opening song.
I was very disappointed how they handled my scene in the remake. Still, I think he's RATHER TASTY!
I can’t believe you exist

Ooh sorry they cut you out in the remake
Heres the wishes Alladin should of made.
1 The ability to sing
2 The ability to emote
3 Wish the Genie free
The same could have said for Jafar
😁
@NoEnya
Considering that “Prince Ali Reprise” was completely left out of the remake, Jafar need to make a wish just for the chance to sing at all.
10:39 Jafar didn't make a lucky guess, he followed what Iago said. Iago is the one who alerted him that Aladdin was in the palace and Iago believed he was the diamond in the rough
And Jafar make a move because of parrot inner voice? That's kind of dumb and lame.
Jonathan Freeman (the original movie’s Ja’far) has been playing the role on Broadway since it opened about 6 years ago...he’s still got it! Despite being, at this point, 70 years old, it was a pleasure seeing him play the role live with the same booming voice.
This Ja’far is just.....just.....overall bad. His mouth movements and his voice and his not being creepy is just....I don’t even know....
you know he kinda sounds like iago when he's mad and yelling
I was thinking the same!!!
The Gilbert Gottfried one or the King Candy one?
This was tolerable but inoffensive. The Lion King is insufferable
Agreed.
The Lion King 2019 is a photo realistic replica of original 1994 version which is disgrace to me and the Lion king fandom
This movie clearly put in an Actual effort into being entertaining in its own right and not just a carbon copy of the original, did it succeed? Ehhh mixed bag there
But there was a clear And honest Try.
Same can't be said for the lion king
Axaul Honestly I kinda feel the opposite, but that's probably because Aladdin is my favorite Disney film. Lion King (2019) just bored the shit out of me. Aladdin (2019) actually pissed me off.
I never saw the 2019 version of "The Lion King". So, I wouldn't have an opinion on that one.
To be fair, I think the cave can differentiate between simply coming in contact while someone tries to get through its disorganized vault and actually taking the treasure.
Love the girl power song that immediately ends with her begging a man to solve the problem...
The one thing that had everyone worried, Will Smith Genie, soon became one of the better parts of the movie.
But of course, we all still miss Robin Williams
12:40 “Save me gin.” As in Djin? Underrated joke.
Reminded me of Golden Sun
No bad, no more wishmaster jokes, go to your room
Yup, even better when he came back with Blue Sapphire.
Man... Aladdin was one of my favourites movies as a kid. Even the Finnish cast was fantastic. Vesa-Matti Loiri did a fantastic job as an "ADHD-genie" like my mother used to call him.
This... this just feels like an insult. The movie could have done so many things differently yet decided not to do none of them. They just took the shortcut to the box office. Bravo.
It might work as a modern family movie, but as an older Disney fan this is a pass for me.
Movie: "Gems" "Gems" "Gems"

"SAVE ME, GIN!"
Save me, Djinn?

Wielding Eminator Huh...I didn’t catch that. Nifty.
Nah bro. He means you need a hangover to watch this stuff.
Missed opportunity on the ending: "This was an Arabian Nightmare."
Yeah, but at the same time kind of expected. Granted kind of felt like would have been a better ending.
It wasn't
ArrrRRRABIAN NIIIIIIIIGHTMAAARES
yeah!
Well, he DID use "arabian nightmare" in his top 11 Disney villains.
I'm gonna be honest.
This is the only live action remake I like.
Literally the only one. I hated Cinderella,I could only tolerate The Beauty and The Beast (Evermore was a bit welcome tbh),and I actually haven't watch The Lion King but I do believe is AWFUL.
I think I like it cause it *tries* to be different for real, and I guess I just have a weak point for Will Smith who honestly did well as his own Genie,he knew he's not Robbin Williams tho it's obvious Disney did tried to do a copy-paste at some points.
I do,however, agree with the fact _not being animated is a huge _*_disadvantage_* we have to accept animation give us a bunch of liberties, more expression, more movement, more energy. Animation *is* superior than live action in so many aspects that people forget about,it's almost infuriating to hear live action is superior. Yes,live action and CGI are cool as well, but animation is just so much better for these kind of stories.
On a side note: I like Speechless. Maybe it's because I heard it way before watching the movie, but I like the song. It's a cool song. For me it's not even entirely Girl Power, many people are tired of their voices not being heard. It's powerful in general.
*and I guess I wasn't confused at the visuals cause I assumed it was on her head?? And that it wasn't literally there but was all an allegory of her desire???? Idk*
Aladdin: What are you doing?!
Jafar: hOw bOuT mY fOoT
Why did a thoroughly Arab story suddenly get injected with all this Bollywood stuff?
Did Disney seriously just go "Ahh its all foreign, who cares"
It's all brown, who cares.
People don't exactly have positivity to the Middle East, but they are okay with India especially as they are increasing as a burgeoning economy. Much like how Hollywood panders to China, it's good business.
That said, the fictional region of Agribah could easily of been a mix, so it's not ridiculously far off. I would of preferred if it actually just went with Bollywood. It was an amusing movie, good for one watch, but I wish it had just gone fully bollywood.
To be technical, the original story of Aladdin likely took place in East Turkestan (or Xinjiang in modern China), so it's closer to India than the Middle East. But yeah, it's still weird.
Hey boys and girls, I'll do you one better: The original version of the Aladdin story had a CHINESE setting. So it was never supposed to be 100% Arabian anyway. Oh well.
The 1001 nights were a mix of Arab, Indian, Chinese, African European etc. tales. Comes from the middle east being the cross road of many cultures during that time.
Tekno Pathetic pretty much
During Jasmine’s song I figured she was Thanosing everyone away. Shows how Aladdin is connected to the MCU.
The same thing came to my mind. I could only think of Thanos
I wasn't sure I saw it right at first
I'm impressed with this mortal Jasmine.
23:34 Actually Jafar did make kissy faces at Aladdin during his own song and it was hilarious, but they cut his song for the pointless Jasmine one in the end. While I understand that giving that block of wood cast as Jafar would have been atrocious I really liked the song from the original.
24:00 I got to actually correct this it's actually not a Parrot Iago was transformed into a Roc they Mythical Bird That is actually from the Arabian Nights stories the Aladdin in that had to Battle so by technical means and standards they are taking a Lore/researched approach to the Climax
Tim curry would have been great as a live action jafar
Oh please Tim Curry is in everything good. The more challenging quest and a possible critic video would be to find something where he isn´t good.

Liked your commentary on the "A whole new world" song. I personally preferred the original version because we see exotic areas of the world. From the Sphinx of Egypt to a Festival in China. In this one, we just see the same old sand and water. (It's probably all in the same area as Agraba).
Critic: "Link pulled it off better"
Me: *laughing* "Yeah Will Smith, sorry but Link was a more convincing Arabian woman than you!"
6:20
That was the major disadvantage the "live-action" Lion King had. It wasn't animated. The animals looked TOO real, and they couldn't have the expression you get in animation. They also cut out any "cartoony" bits to maintain the illusion that it was a National Geographic documentary. There was no Timon in a hula skirt. There was no Rafiki doing karate. The "Can't Wait to be King" song was neutered by not having the goofy cartoony parts. Even a giant lion's head in the clouds wasn't realistic enough for it.
RedHeadKevin Still don’t get why they didn’t do what the Jungle Book did.
@@bbolin5626 It didn't work in the Jungle Book either.
Because Disney doesn't understand the saying "if it's not broken, don't fix it"neither one of these live action remakes seems to have been made simply to fix the broken original. So lets make Timon look like a real Meerkat lets make Scar look like a real lion instead of the lion version of Jafar, lets remove the Remember who you're with a lion in the clouds.
Well Shere Khan actually looked a little bit better in the live action version.

1. There is a Tommy Wiseu-ish quality to how Jafar speaks.
2. "How come he don't want me man?" 😁
Will Smith’s genie taking over for Robin Williams is like a good stepfather taking over for a greater father. Can’t exactly replace what ya had but he does his best and you can appreciate it
He does his best....but the problem is he is doing his best to try and out-RobinWilliams Robin Williams.
The genie should have been rewritten for Will Smith to be Will Smith.
And that means also rewriting the songs, most of which were too slow and lacked energy.
Good analogy
Edward Lafferty No, no he wasn’t. Will Smith has ALWAYS been able to play the energetic, over-enthusiastic character. Have you ever seen Fresh Prince? As for the songs; even NC acknowledged the songs were done really well and had some good changes that made them more suitable for Will. I can respect people bringing up the flaws of these movies, but don’t nitpick things like this for dumb reasons.
