  • If you are holidaying in Oban and looking to pass a day or two on some of the Inner Hebrides islands then taking the ferry from Oban to Tiree is something to consider. Tiree offers something quite different from most of the other islands.
The ferry takes around 3 and a half to 4 hours to reach Tiree with a stop at the neighbouring island of Coll. Pulling out from Oban harbour offers some fine sights of the town and McCaig’s folly. Soon you are heading up through the sound of Mull and after passing Kilchoan and Tobermory you will be out in the waters of the Inner Hebrides.
Swinging south we will arrive at Coll to allow other passengers to get off and other to come on board, some with their cars. Scarinish is the port where those visiting Tiree will get off. The ferry now makes for Barra from hrere.
Tiree is a flat island which is famed for windsurfing and other such activities. The Tiree Wave Classic is an annual event held here due the suitable winds on the island.
Being flat as with much of Coll allows aircraft to land on Tiree airport, all be it, the smaller type. But this offers travellers an alternative mode of transport to these islands. In general, winds hit the mainland and even the islands with higher hills to create clouds blocking out the sun and giving us rain.
Not so on Tiree. Having not very much in the way of hills on Tiree means that it is now recognised as having the most sunshine in the UK.
Places to visit are the ancient Dun Beag Iron Age broch just north of Vaul village and the Ringing Stone which is
thought to have travelled from Rhum during the Ice Age.
Or take in a round of golf on the 9 hole course. You could also do what a lot of people do who visit Tiree and that’s to go on some leisurely cycle trips or just go on walks. The beaches here are up with some of the best you will find anywhere and can provide some great walking areas.
If you wished you might also want to take the short trip from Tiree to Coll to check it out while you are in the area.

So true Ali. It's a beautiful sail and a way to see the most of the Isle of Mull coastline. Another interesting trip, is the bus trip to Fionnphort, then taking the boat to Fingals cave, then to Iona and then back onto Mull.
