Skyrim for Nintendo Switch is... different, I guess

  • Skyrim Special and Anniversary edition for the Switch was something else for sure. It suffers from a lot of drawbacks, like with the hardware it's running on, but it does manage to do... one thing right? If anything at all.

Complaining about the buttons “being swapped” by Nintendo is really fucking stupid because they made the layout and Xbox is the one with the swapped buttons they basically just copied the dream cast and because it’s easy to get used to them being different

I've beaten it on ps3 when the game would barely work if you have a save file with more than 60 hours on it, beaten it again on PC, did all the mod shit with my wife and I cannot understand why the hell would you think you can "interact with everything and anyone". The npcs are all the same and have nothing good to do or say, everything in the world is a joke fetchquest into a draugr filled tunnel for the 213891237th time, and everyone exists simply to blow the Dragonborn all day long. You're either nostalgic for the game, never played anything better before or after it (even oblivion or Morrowind ffs), so your opinion is not worth jack as its infested with ignorance and contempt for slop. Thankfully bethesda is going down the drain currently even if it took like 6 bad, buggy and horribly written games for people to finally get the hint that the world moved on and any slight effort can make something better than it. In case you want more detail, just watch Salt Factory's video on skyrim. Any sane person that comes from outside to look at this game when the cards are on the table like that, cannot think its a coherent thing. I've owned a few different copies of Skyrim, but the first time I actually beat all of the main quests was on the Switch. Last year I bought a Steam Deck just so I could play handheld modded Skyrim, I spent hours and hours on Nexus, watching UA-cam vids of various quality and usefulness getting things to work, and then after I finally got it to work, they updated the PC game late last year, breaking most of the mods (unless you were willing to jump through hours of hoops to get it working after every update), so I at that point, I was done. The A, B, X, and Y buttons have been in that layout since the Super Nintendo, back in 1990. It was an evolution of the NES controller's layout where the A button was on the right, and B button was on the left, back in 1985. The only real early defiance came from Sega when they released the Genesis in 1989, after seeing Nintendo's upcoming Super Famicom / SNES controller with 4 face buttons; Sega released a controller with 6 face buttons, A, B, C, X, Y, and Z. And after challenging the Nintendo Entertainment System with their Sega Master System, Sega saw the early designs for controllers, and simply inverted the layout that Nintendo had made popular, putting A on the left instead of the right. Nintendo has stuck to their layout longer than most gamers have been alive, and even though it's clearly not the choice of most people, they were never the weird ones, but rather, were the only ones sticking to the format that they themselves popularized. You hate it, I hate it, basically everyone who plays on anything not made by Nintendo hates it... but that's how it was at the dawn of modern gaming, and they've adhered to it. Everyone else deviated from it, and were the weird ones.

I first played Skyrim on the Switch, I'm pretty much a casual gamer and had never heard of the Elder Scroll games. After getting a Switch my local game shop recommended it and I fell in love with it and put about 300 hours into it. I watched some videos for help in a few spots but always thought the wait feature was only for PC-Xbox_Ps3. So I spent a lot of time waiting and sleeping.

I find myself getting Skyrim on the switch only to mod it on a hackable switch i recently got. Though I can't get it as good as my skyrim SE modlist i spent years and years on due to lack of skse and mod support, it's shocking when you're still able to change everything else for a small device as this, and fun trying to work around the hardware limitations of the switch, with the caveat of having those nasty texture glitches. If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that learning to understand file structures and getting mods to work without requiring an esp.

I played thousands of hours of this on 360 over the years but never on PC because, and you might get what I mean, it’s FEELS better on a console. In my mind it is a game for the tv.
Playing this on the switch, it runs better than it ever did on my 360 back in the day, it’s got the CC content with the anniversary pack which is nice and having the chance to play handheld is nice. I don’t dare play this with mods because I don’t want to overwrite the pure feeling of nostalgic joy that this game can deliver but there are small things I wish this game had on switch that would require small mods such as alternate start or some role playing stuff.

Playing the Switch version of Skyrim was as impactful as playing the Borderlands 2 port on the Vita: a massive game with lots to do and hours of fun on the go. The Borderlands was not great at all with a lot of performance issues. But I put a lot of time into both games and enjoyed it.
Skyrim did not come with any of the Creation dlc at launch. A 2-3GB update came through recently which included every Creation dlc and is now part of the game.

Not sponsored just an average gamer that was shocked at what I was playing. I can’t explain it other modlist just feel like content not right for the game somehow. Nolvus just feels right. But I gravitated a lot more to Breath of the Wild and Witcher 3 (which I probably have 500 hours in on the Switch version). I don't think I've figured out the core appeal/experience that I can latch onto. With Witcher 3, its all the short stories, with Breath of the Wild it is the sandbox elements, the massive scope of the adventure, and its got a "story" in how you experience the world. Skyrim, I'm struggling to find a thread.
