New FREEFORM GRADIENT TOOL Problems (SOLVED)

- Find out the problems I have with the NEW FREEFORM GRADIENT tool, in Adobe Illustrator CC 2019. The new gradient tool addiction is welcomed by me into Illustrator CC 2019, but I do think it needs to be tweaked a little, and here's why!

So I made a video tutorial on how to use the new features in Adobe Illustrator CC 2019, you can check that out linked below, but today I am focusing on the freeform gradient tool, in the new version of Illustrator CC. I do love this tool, and I’ve wanted something like this in Illustrator for the longest time, where a gradient can be easily controlled long a have or text for example, something better than the mesh tool. And with all of the awesome features of the freeform gradient tool, there are some flaws that I can feel and see.
So in todays Illustrator tutorial video, I go through my issues and problems with the freeform gradient tool, and offer up some work-arounds too. If you do have Illustrator CC 2019, tune in and learn a thing or two about the freeform gradient tool, and make some awesome gradient designs after gaining that knowledge.

To avoid outlining any text, can you add a new Freeform Gradient as a fill over your type and still have the same options of editing the gradient?

Sir Tom, I ran into the problem with the free form gradient tool working with text for a logo design. I found a way around it very early this morning before I saw your video. You are justified in the way you feel about using the free form tool. Thanks for sharing the information. As always have a great day.

If you use global swatches for your color, you can change colors in the swatches palette rather than clicking each point and having that box in the way.

Freeform gradient was a bit of a gut punch because it was the #1 feature I wanted to see, and then I got it pretty much immediately, but it works nothing at all like I'd need it to for it to be useful. I don't know why they had to graft all these new entities onto this particular tool instead of keeping it consistent with the UI throughout the rest of program. Can't eyedrop colors onto nodes, can't transfer gradients between shapes, gradient paths are nothing at all like regular paths and can't be edited with the same tools (warp, bulge, pucker, etc- still prefer gradient mesh simply for its compatibility with these), can't convert normal paths to gradient paths or vice versa. Hoping it sees some improvement next year, but I feel like it needs a complete rewrite to better integrate it into the existing toolset, and there's surely a reason they avoided developing it that way to begin with. Looks like another feature du jour that will promptly be forgotten about, just like gradient meshes, bristle brushes and the 3D tools were.
I had a problem with that Gradient. When I tried to copy the gradient that I made... it does nothing. I hope they fix it.

Add a new fill layer in Appearance & you can edit the text and the gradient.

Hello Mr. Satori, let me add another problem with this new feature. If you apply the freeform gradient to an object, let`s say hands of a character and if you duplicate and reflect it, the position of the gradient dots don`t get reflected properly and the whole gradient looks corrupted. Is there a workaround or an adjustment in the preferences to keep the dots in the properly reflected position of the reflected object?
I did not know this, thanks for drawing my attention to it. I cannot think of a workaround as of now, I will have a look later and see if I can figure one out
I think they didn't fully explore this addition and we might see improvement in future updates. Not sure if they have an open beta option before finalizing these updates but if they did, these minor issues would have been resolved.
I do like the feature, a bit disappointed though.

freeform gradient is grayed out
Great video as always. I use the new gradient functions intensely and I've noticed that I switch a lot between points and lines mode. Is there a way to apply shortcuts to these modes or another way to toggle quickly between them?
Yeah that is another thing where a keyboard shortcut would come in handy, but I don't think there is a way to toggle right now
@@SatoriGraphics As I keep on to explore this new feature, I discover more bugs: it is not possible to copy and reflect an object filled with freeform gradients without corrupting the gradient point positions of the reflected object. Sometimes it is even not possible to change the position of such an object without disturbing the path of the gradient points. It is a great feature but it needs to be improved to be used effectively in detailed illustrations.

I've a problem in illustrator bit o don't know how to google it
When i start illustrator cc it's all fine but once i create our open a file the software will keep on clicking out of the window
Like it's clicking on the task bar... And loses focus from the illustrator window
Why it's that?

The best thing to do would be to go onto Adobes site, and on the help section, and start a chat with a staff member

You are correct, this feature is not ready for prime time, this may well be the worst illustrator update ever and i remember using version 3. This may be addressed an update but dont count on it. Illustrator is the smallest team at Adobe considering there are 60+ people on the Photoshop team to a measly 5 that's on Illustrator. Adobe don't know what to do with Illustrator...
That's sad, only 5!? Illustrator is the least popular, but the most powerful imho.

Just add a new fill in your Appearance panel and set it to gradient :) BOOM editable gradient type :)
Another problem: Recolor artwork doesn't work with freeform gradient

uhh no.. these aren't bugs, just added features that would be nice. if u don't like the new tools u can just not use them and still have an improved version over 2018.. some people
And what about recoloring each color one by one, point by point? Reeeally annoying...
I've found that if you hold the cmd key, it switches over to the selection tool and changes the shape to what it would look like it was selected (handles, et cetera) which works for me for previewing the gradient. That isn't the most elegant work around, but it is something :/

yeah this is the absolute least intuitive tool there is. I get angered when I have to search up every time how to use. F BS CS BS GD!
