So you're worried about your warranty... // What voids Warranty? //

- Warranty is something all modders worry about. We have so many new WRX owners that want to mod their car that I hear this question daily. "While X void my warranty? Will Y void my warranty?"
TL:DR , warranty is never voided. Warranty Claims, however, can be denied!
If you ever want to mod your car its a risk that you take. Even though the 2022 WRX is a very capable engine , anything can happen! This still shouldnt deter you as the car is a lot of fun when modded. We all pay to play. Hopefully this video at least helps to shed some light on some things you CAN do without having to worry about your warranty.

I didnt realize I talked for THAT long! ETS is gonna kill me since I keep using their intakes for thumbnails 😂😂😂
If you don't have the money for a new Motor then don't mess with it.
Best advice imo. Pay to play
Graham explained it best. It depends on your dealership. It's why you hear guys getting reimbursed on a blown engine that was tuned and guys getting denied because they had an intake. That is why none have a definitive answer.
Well said! I actually need to have a chat with my dealership and see how mod friendly they really are. I may need that warranty 🤣
2023 WRX and l did option the STI exhaust and made a huge difference in sound and l believe little more torque, car is angry now. l am installing a Perrin intake and l am done. Enough performance and plenty for daily driver. Hope my warranty stays good
I do my own oil changes so when I took my 21 VA to a dealer for alignment. The service advisor told me to keep all of the records of oil changes and dates and times. Or else the warranty is void.
I just a full send on my VB. Fully bolted on with: ETS Intake, intercooler, charge pipe, catted j pipe, catback with resonator, GFB DV+ diverter, Mishimoto catch can and pulley cover, OEM mudguards, and Yokohama advan sport A/S + tires. My Jb4 sadly shit the bed when I spilt a little windshild fluid on it when the wind picked up. Had to jack my car up at a gas station to disconnect everything to get her to run. Running amazingly otherwise.
I’ve been waiting for my 2023 WRX for three months and I already have 10k of tuning parts in the shed I’ve got it bad
That crack line on the front lip is driving my ocd crazy lol
I know. 😂😂 I'm gonna replace the lip in the next 2 weeks. I think its had enough
That is right PTP! Great idea about finding the right dealer.
I bought mine with the short shifter and STi axle back. They said I can do intake and catback but no tune/Cobb that will void the warranty. My dealership does lifetime warranty when you buy a vehicle from them.
My dealership has lifetime warranty as well. That's why I'm on the fence about pulling the trigger to start modding. However, I still have my AP from when I had my 2016 VA. Been debating on having it flashed for the VB cause once I do, I know I wouldn't be able to resist.
Man car looking so clean! Should be getting va back this week they told me there gonna install a accesport and tune it for me! I'm very excited and thankful for having a service contract!
WHATTTTT your dealer is installing the tune? That's kind of like what Graham was saying! That's awesome bro 🤘🤘
@@HeavyMetalWRX they took it to the local proformance shop bro!
Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn dude :) I'm looking to buy a WRX in the next couple/few months, and I'm still trying to decide where I'm going to get it from, so I'd love to talk to your dealer :)
@@ARod4374 it was a subaru dealership in my town man! Car is a 15 wrx white came with exhaust and intake what I think happened is previous owner took the cobb messing everything up!
What dealer do you go too?
It really just depends on the person and their risk tolerance. My last car was protuned 100k no issues, but a mazdaspeed not a subaru no issues, but this one I played it safe with a custom JB4 map it's faster than the Cobb OTS, but not as fast a protune/etune. At the moment for the last year I've been satisfied with the JB4 and the performance. I am however impressed with the Pro tune power output.
Mazdaspeed was dead reliable even with ots tunes. Oil consumption is the worst thing with Mazdaspeed. WRX/STI has many small nuances.
@@gaivoron o dude 100% mine was FBO E30 tuned never had one issue beat on it daily. Sold in in 2016 I've had my 22 WRX JB4 tuned on a custom map about a year. I'm still satisfied with the numbers for now. I may go protune in a few years, but theres not need for now and the ability to revert back to stock undetected is kind of nice
@@DylanVBWRX I feel you on not going full Protune yet. The car is new and there is an oil pan seal issue. Just stick with JB4 for now and keep that warranty around.
My dealer was one of those guys who didn't even want me to put anything on...not even cosmetics...and he said in this day and age the wrx was meant to be as quiet as it is. I have a 2022 WRX and just got axleback exhaust from Aeroflow Dynamics installed. It's been running well and there is no back pressure when I release the throttle.
Well... My access port comes in tomorrow 😅
Going to get at least one free oil change before I flash it (going to try and convince them to put in 5w-30) and then the smiles start.
Thanks to you I already contacted and purchased a stage 1 e-tune from Graham and Boosted Performance. I'm so excited.
Hahah yessss!! Did you make sure to tell him I sent ya? I need to start tracking everything since I'm basically a business now 🤣
@@HeavyMetalWRX haha I sure did! Hope you get some sort of kickback (or at least a bounty of thank you's lol), and hopefully he puts some extra care into my tune 😜
I'm just thrilled to have roughly 305whp and 360wheel torque for being stock other than high flow filter and charcoal filter delete (and catback, but that's not as beneficial at these lower powers I think).
All while being relatively safe and reliable! Stoked.
Thanks Awais.
@@Nonx47 Broz that's Awesome ! 305hp is nothing to scoff at. Plus you'll feel the torque when the turbo kicks in! Thanks for believing in what I say and going with Graham. He's fantastic and will take care of you 100% 🤘
@@HeavyMetalWRX oh for sure, I'm going to be thrilled with that power in my daily driver, and like you said, the torque is where it's at for me!
100%, I wouldn't have even known about him if it weren't for you. Your tuner talks solidified that he's the guy I want tinkering with my car. Very intelligent person with a lot of knowledge.
Again, thank you!
I know it's been a few weeks, but you REALLY need to look into the Magnason Moss Warranty Act. In short, they have to prove that the part you installed caused the failure of whatever your warranty supposed to cover. So a set of axlebacks which make zero change to exahsut flow can NOT be why the rods blew out of the block. No matter what, it's on their end to prove what caused the failure and/or if it was a modification you made that caused it. Dealers, for some odd reason, always want to deny warranty work if they can simply to not have to do the work and/or possibly take a loss in the work as the manufacturer only pays for certain amount of labor/parts. Magnason Moss literally makes it harder for them to deny because at one point manufacturers were denying just to deny. It costs the manufacturer and dealers money repairing a warrantied item. Just like the Toyota 86 you were talking about. Toyota sold a "performance" car and denied a warranty because it was used on a "track". Toyota knew (especially with the RTV debacle) that they couldn't prove that was the reason the engine failed.
Love the content, keep it up!
I actually did look a bit more into warranty laws and you are absolutely right. They have to prove the part broke the car. I actually would love to do a whole video on that. I should read more into it. Maybe I can have a lawyer come on the channel haha.
@@HeavyMetalWRX That would be AWESOME. I actually had a Ford dealer try to say my purge valve on my ST I had at the time wouldn't be covered because of my blow off valve being aftermarket. I got Ford Corporate involved and it was fully covered at a different dealership. Even they knew about the MMWA and said they would deal with that dealer. They recently got on trouble for marking up an F150 lightning and it looks like they are closing. I'm just leaving my WRX alone aside from an axleback and maybe an sti wing. The car is probably the single best stock "sport economy" car I've ever sat in. But definitely, see if you can get a lawyer who knows the MMWA on for some comments. Many of us car enthusiasts don't have a clue about it!
The bottom line, if it leaves a foot print in the ecu, that’s a no no. Exhaust, intake and minor bolt ons, don’t leave foot prints. Just remove them and put the oem parts back on before going to the dealer.
The warranty is a joke anyway. The reason; the manufacturer pays way less for warranty work to be performed often leading to shoddy/rushed work from the techs. Stealerships DO NOT want to do warranty work. Far better to just build your car and find a reputable mechanic shop who specializes in your car’s brand and pay them honest pay for honest work. Stealerships aren’t worth dealing with. They have too much overhead and not enough heart and passion for the cars themselves. If you can afford to tune your car you can afford to properly fix it. If you really want a warranty don’t tune your shit until after it’s expired.
I’m worried for that tiny chair 😂
Hahahaha dude that chair is SOLID
My local dealer said the only thing you can do without voiding the warranty is cat back exhaust… we can’t even change the wheels 🤦🏾♂️
Yea if you have a wheel warranty then I can see that.
I wouldn't even use the JB4, from what I have gathered it can increase your boost beyond what the factory limits are. They can look back and see that the boost went higher than the factory threshold. They can then determine was it a mechanical failure that caused it or a mod. Trust me, they know what a JB4 tuner is. They will know.
its a shame you have to potentially void your warranty to wake up the beasts.
They'll know because they can read the flash record and the stock hardware will break upon removal 😅.
Great video and some very valid points, i wonder if a charge pipe and a panel filter would be ok ?
It’ll void it
A good mechanic can tell which fasteners have been removed, and if you have a dh for a service tech, they can cause speculation to deny your claim
Not a whole lot of good mechanics work at dealerships 🤣
@@HeavyMetalWRX touche 😂😂😂
What about driving data collection on a stock wrx? Im about to learn this week if theyre going to honor drive train warranty after claims dept review a data collection. Completely stock self maintained 2021 wrx 60k on odometer. Would spirited driving void warranty? I never launch it but i fo scoot around 😅 was purchased within the year as certified pre-owned
Just adding a part doesn’t instantly make Subaru lose all responsibility for their entire drivetrain
My local dealership was always cool with tuned cars…
Embrace them and never let go 😂
You should do a review on your intercooler and if you’ve had any issues since installation
I have plans too but I was hoping to do it after I get my tune sorted out. Since right now it's not doing much haha. I may actually take your advice and at least talk about it!
I got mine in November last year. Apple car play slow down my iPhone and heat it up like crazy…… also Apple car play always get discounted and it comes back after like a minute…… does this fix these issues?
Dude, your videos are awesome. That's all
If it needs a tune or requires a zip disc it probably voids your warranty
Zip disc?
Suspension is a wear and tear item…. I wouldn’t feel any way modding it. Shocks typically aren’t covered anyhow under any warranty
They can be if something catastrophic happens. Let's say a tube bursts at 5000 miles. That's definitely not normal behavior.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I guess anythings possible.
Any part that is not OEM and not installed by someone who is not a certified Subaru tech violates the spirit of the law and you are on your own.
My dealer was complaining because I wanted to put a front lip and side skirts on my car lol (and they were STI style, just in CF instead)
Whaaaat that's ridiculous , aero has nothing to do with anything 🤣🤣
@@HeavyMetalWRX Yeah my local dealer is terrible. They complain about everything I do, and i have even purposely been sticking to just cosmetic mods for now (ill do performance stuff down the road when I am comfortable that the car is reliable).
If I tune the engine ecu does that void the warranty on the rest of the electricity.
Save up to $10k for an attorney, get ready to sue if you want to fight over if they can or can’t void your warranty.
If you change the car and that change is believed to cause the failure you are trying to get warrantied....then it's not covered. But if you have a fully tuned car with every performance part known to man on it and the seat belt malfunctions...that's covered.
Exactly. Well said!
The salesman at Subaru said the only thing that doesn’t void it is a catback.
My dealership told me, intake, exhausts and pulleys were fine 😮
I'm eagerly waiting for the person who gets denied on the engine of a TR WRX. 😂🤣Unfortunately, I'd love to get all cobby with my 23, but Northeast dealerships seem to be very strict.😥
By the time I get a tune for my car I bet I’ll be close to being out of warranty. I drive too much 😂
That's the spirit! Then we can roll together and pick on Mopar boys 🤣
I spy with my little eye... a crack in the front lip? :P
😭😭😭😭 that lip is so messed up now haha. Both sides I glued but the driver side flew off again during autocross day.
@@HeavyMetalWRX Honestly it means a lot that youve been so transparent about your lip. Im an STL local myself and I cant tell you the number of time on Kings Highway Ive said to myself "welp that would have been the end of my lip" It's also why Im still rocking stock height. It's brutal out there brother and your sacrifice has not gone unnoticed/unappreciated, much love!
@@gdesigns6895 lmaoo my fellow STL bro, this is also why I've been stock height too! This lip is so bad ass but I think I will switch to the OEM style when I drop the car. There is no way this lip will survive lowered 😭😭
Looks like I’m only doing cosmetic upgrades
I actually went back to the dealership where I purchased my 2022WRX, and I made a list of items that I want to upgrade.
Upgrade intake: no. That’s because you’re playing with the emissions of the vehicle.
Upgrade exhaust : yes
Upgrade the shifter to a short shifter : yes
Upgrading tune, the ECU : no. Voids warranty
Upgrade fuel blend mix E85 or E30: HELLO NO! Voids warranty because the engine is not designed for that application
At the end of the day, if you really want to modify and go ballz out, wait until the warranty expires. That way there are no ramifications or fallout if you have bring your vehicle for a repair
It's like graham said, there may be a gray area depending on where you go!
so am i safe to upgrade alex back?
@@r.ctravis3250 yes sir! Axleback is the one thing dealers will agree is safe.
@@r.ctravis3250 yes. Axle back is a yes fromSubaru of America
Soooo is jb4 actually reliable? Even with the ability to maybe stay within warranty im not trying to deal with the hassle if it isn't.
Bwahahaa these videos are funny when it pertains to Subaru modding lol
Why?
You need to make that intro into a short 🤣
As I tell everyone, modding your car is pay to play, you cannot get mad for a company denying a claim if you jump into engine mods. Now if a dealer wants to try and deny an engine repair because you have coils, that's some BS that needs to be pushed back against.
As far as JB4, if I am correct BMW can detect the JB4 with checks they have added within the system. But Subaru does not have these checks or a way of putting them in on the 22. Maybe in future they will.
Modern ECUs, especially in our cars cannot be swapped out like that. There is a whole process where the car is tied to the ECU and in order to run another one you need to link the car to the ecu(dealer would need to do this) and in doing so I believe this unmarries the original ECU.. Used to be able to swap ECUs like this though, I had a spare ECU for my 05 Ralliart for when I would send the stock one in for tuning.
Lmaoo that's actually a really good idea. I will make it into a short!
What about swapping out pulleys?
I feel like an asshole dealership will try to shift the blame to anything they can. If your belt snaps or something happens to a component in the chain they COULD be like "yo, you and aftermarket pulleys , how do we know they have the same capacity to blah blah blah" haha
Does switching to 5W-30 void warranty?
I don't believe so since dealers are actually switching on request.
It should not because the owners manual says 5W-30 may be used if 0W-20 is not available.
My dealer is cool i straight up asked them and they said they'd warranty my motor. The gm has a 2019 sti and all the technicians have wrx's and sti's. One tech has a 6266 on his sti fully built. Not that it matters because if i blow the motor im going fully built
Some dealers are like that. At my dealership id say all the techs drive some sort of built WRX or STI. The owner has an old modified bugeye.
Subaru offers a STI short shifter and a STI Performance Muffler system
Unfortunately I bought the short throw shifter and it's DOODOO. I would not spend the $350 on it. I also got mudflaps which were a waste as I lowered the car. They drag everywhere. That's $600 I wasted 😭
Will adding an Anime sticker void my warranty? (Asking for a friend)
As long as it's a big tiddy anime sticker , you'll be ok 🤣🤣
But JB4 is garbage coming from Euro.AFR is better.
Drop in filter?
That shouldn't be an issue. It's just a wear and tear replacement item.
@@HeavyMetalWRX Thank you!

Your code don’t even work
Which company did you try?
@@HeavyMetalWRXimport image
😂 quick and simple

Hahaha got me.
hi
So to clarify once you download or install a cobb/OTS etc tune it's not possible to delete/ uninstall and restore back to the stock oem tune? A point of no return? Thanks
Pretty much. You can turn it back to stock(flashing the stock map back) but the dealer has a way of checking the ECU to see if it's been tuned.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I see that makes sense. Thanks for the heads up and info.! Keep up with the awesome content and shredding 🤘🏻
if you never disconnect the battery, the dealer will be able to see that there was a flash event. the funny thing is, its only stored in volatile memory so if you simply disconnect the battery for a while after reverting back to the stock tune, there will be zero evidence of your ECU ever being flashed. the dealer will then say, "why was the battery disconnected??" and all you have to say is the battery died, you removed it to charge it.
