- The fallout continues after Robert Morris resigned from Gateway Church over furor following allegations he molested a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s. Morris, 62, who resigned from Gateway last week, offered an initial statement on the allegations against him in which he again used the term “young lady.”
In that statement, he described what he said was “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” in a home he stayed in during his 20s. “It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong,” he said. The preacher went on to state that the behavior happened on “several occasions” over a number of years.
Morris said the situation was “brought to light” in 1987. He said he confessed, repented, sought counseling, and returned to ministry two years later with the support of the victim’s father. For the record, the accuser, Cindy Clemishire - now 54 - has denied the latter claim as well as the notion she was a "young lady" at the time, claiming the abuse started when she was just a child.
Clemishire joins CBN News to detail her allegations, to share her faith journey, and explain the reasons she's speaking out.
HERE IS GATEWAY'S STATEMENT: Dear Gateway Church family,
The Board of Elders wants to reach out to you personally to address the recent events in our church and to provide you with an update.
This is an unthinkable and painful time in our church. Our church congregation is hurt and shaken, and we know that you have many important questions. We want to answer as many of your questions as we can at this point, and we ask that you continue to extend us grace as we navigate through the most challenging time in Gateway’s history.
The details that have recently come to light are deeply disturbing. We continue to pray that God will bring peace, comfort, and healing to everyone who has been affected. We know you are grieving just as we are. We know that so many of you have been impacted and affected. We are here for you, we are praying for you, and we love you.
The Board of Elders has taken a series of steps that we want to update you on.
First, the Board of Elders called a special meeting and accepted the resignation of our senior pastor Robert Morris this past week. Gateway Church is committed to protecting people-first and foremost children and the most vulnerable. Abuse simply cannot be tolerated. I am a 40 year old woman. I was a Gateway member for 5 years in grand prairie tx. I was raped by my female cousin at the age of 5. I was also abused by men my whole life. I went to the staff for help at Gateway and they did not help me when my abuser was at the church. They pulled me in a room as i cried and screamed. They did nothing. Ill never forget that. Was in 2016. On and off id tell myself that churches are BS and God is not real after this. Thank you for speaking because it helps me see its not God that didnt help me. God is the only one who will. You inspire me! Thank you soooo much! Bless you!!!

So sorry that your cousin violated you. I'm not sure though what any church could've done for you after so many years had passed? Would your cousin have allowed them to counsel him? Or have them take him to the authorities? With his age, I'd think most would feel uncomfortable even bringing that up for fear of violence towards them.

My father was a deacon & abused my sister & me all our lives. Disgusting. Neither of us told the other until I found out he abused my 9 year old daughter. I broadcast it, we confronted him, & forced him in to treatment. Tore our family apart. I forgave him but relationships ended. I ended up being a nurse & for 28 years helped victims become survivors. God planned every step of my wonderful professional career. I give God all the glory.🙏🙏🙏🙏

The relationship ended after he abused her 9-year-old daughter...did she forget what he did to her or something? What Robert Morris did was not just a sin. It was a crime. He should be in prison.

As a person that was molested at the age of 11. Yes it affected me deeply and it stole my childhood . I always felt dirty and carried a spirit of shame. . At the age of twenty I met Jesus and was saved . Forgiveness and Love are powerful tools that heal. Forgiveness sets one free and love covers a multitude of sin. That's what our Lord Jesus did for everyone that chooses to believe .

@@carley437 ..... yes, I am a survivor as well and I cannot relate to her desire to punish. I want my abusers to come to repentance and be delivered.... I pray for them always. Joyce Meyers also had to walk the same journey and forgive her father as well. It is difficult, but with Jesus it is possible.

This speaks to me. I was masterfully groomed by my female Christian school teacher at an IFB church. Hearing her story helped so much. From the time I was 12 until 18 she sexually abused me. I sued her and the church and just settled this past month. It took years to fight them. I couldn’t speak up until I was in my 40’s and had my own children. The more you tell your story, the more shame is dispelled and it gives others the strength to step forward.

Please do some research on the psychology of what a victim of molestation has to deal with their whole life so you don’t make anymore insensitive comments.

It seems like she wasn’t even sure she was abused for a long time. The time in which it took her to process the events, have no impact on his accountability. Just because you rob someone, and they don’t report it, doesn’t mean you didn’t commit a crime. The victim is not responsible for the abuser. The victims actions or lack of action has no bearing on if the event(s) was a crime or not, or if there should be accountability.

young lady is a term used to address a 'girl'....he did not call her a young 'woman'. Then your case would make more sense. (Many girls, at that age are definitely physically becoming young women). Young lady is NOT referring to her physical state....it is a term to respect a growing female.

I feel the same that's why I believe something is very wrong with this "lady's" testimony. She wants to look like Babe, talk the sexual details were nothing emotionally to her, and yet talk Jesus like He'd have nothing to say about none of this at all.

Houston … 1960… pastor groomed… had multiple young boy victims. My brother taken to the YMCA in Dallas… later would cry and tell what his hero did to him … church of about 800 … multiple families wounded for life … I feel the pain … I’m 79 … tears for my family … we were noble to not talk about what happened… everyone suffered alone … Cindy’s ongoing recovery story was needful for all of us who were never heard … prayers for all who are still recovering .
I am so proud of this woman for standing up and speaking out against this awful thing done to her when she was a CHILD!
No one who has ever committed rape or harmed or child should ever be allowed any kind of leadership position of any level in any church or ministry. Even if they have repented. The Bible is clear. If Moses was not allowed in the Holy Land, David was not allowed to build GOD'S Temple, then churches should follow the rules for any elder/leader in The Church - they must be above reproach, husband of only one wife, etc.
So cool that she never lost her faith.

It’s so important to have a personal relationship with God through the Christ and not just follow whatever anyone claiming to be a Christian says is of Christ when it isn’t. God is only good, those rejecting doing the good of God are not a reflection of God. Read scripture, pray, listen and obey HIM.

I was molested as a 6/7 year old child by a cousin & my mom just passed last year at 89 & supported my cousin until she died. This is why I only trust God!!!

After being in ministry for over 46 years, this just sickens my heart! This dear heart has been very courageous in sharing her testimony. Thank you for you for standing up for justice. I was sexually molested by my Great Uncle when I was 4 and 5 years old, and the Lord didn't let me remember this until I was 50 years old. I knew deep down that something had happened to me but I thought it was my dad, which he also sexually abused me. My story is devastating but Jesus has gotten me through everything of course. I have such a powerful testimony and getting ready to step into the destiny that God has called me to at 73 years old! I'm so excited because it's better than I ever dreamed or imagined possible! That's our Lord!!!

@@lisah.8838 No He didn't because I was a raging alcoholic on and off for 35 years like my dad and Jesus was protecting me during that time. During the night on February 11, 2001, 2 days after my birthday, I walked into my house and was coming out of a blackout. I went into a rage and was breaking everything in sight. I remember falling to my knees in the living room and all I said was, God please help me I can't do this anymore. I felt the power of God come over me and in 1 second He delivered me totally and I was finally free from alcohol. I drank and drove all the time and never remembered anything I did dozens of times unless someone told me what I had done. I never got a DWI and only have one speeding ticket in my life. If course now I know that I have a lot of angels around me at all times. Then in April after that a close Christian friend and a friend of hers were praying over me and suddenly I was seeing my Great Uncle and remembering some of the things he did to me. I saw enough and the vision stopped. My friend Gloria said she wanted me to see a Christian counselor she knew about and that she would pay for it. This counselor knew nothing about me. When I walked in that day and sat down we hadn't been talking for more than 5 minutes and she said, do you have someone in your family who was a Mason? I just froze for a few seconds and said yes. She said, he really hurt you didn't he? I said yes. I'm getting emotional as I am writing this so I'm going to stop now. I will write more later.

And no offense, but you don't need to be questioning anyone about why God didn't do something at a specific time because not only was I molested by my Great Uncle, but by my dad also, and that's a whole different story of devastation.

Every time I watch pastor Morris I feel something telling me he is arrogant, critical and self-righteous, but I always push the thought away bc his messages line up biblicaly and he caries himself as though he's honoring God in a more serious way than other Christians. But after hearing this, I feel I need to trust my discernment more and not question my God-given gut so much...

Yes, but at the same time they didn’t report it when they found out and they let it go on for 4 years when they should have seen some signs honestly.
@Papaspronator they were obligated to report it. You can be jailed for not reporting. I know a mom who waited 2 days, only because she knew a family member had already reported and she was put in jail.

So true! What 12 year old would want this? It takes a great deal of courage to be transparent about this, knowing it will change how the world treats her. It’s such a tragedy that the victims are marked when she did nothing to deserve it. She was a child!

My heart breaks for your suffering and hurt.
You are being courageous and a blessing to the untold numbers of children who have suffered this abuse also by truthfully seeking the protection from predators lurking in our midst. From Jesus’s own lips we have his clearly stated opinion. It includes a millstone and a deep sea when one hurts one of his little ones. There’s always forgiveness and restitution available. But it’s never cloaked in darkness and lies, but in light and humility.
Let’s not forget that her parent knew and did nothing. No police involvement. Bringing this up without lumping them into this whole thing is just as bad.
All I can think of is that her parents may have not wanted to put their daughter through more trauma with a trial and all that.
@@jenrichele yes I can understand that. The problem is if there was a time to prosecute him it was then. Also he already went through church discipline and restoration for 2 years. This was 35 years ago and as far as I know he has not done anything since. The decision to ruin someone over something he already paid the price for is terrible. Her parents were obligated to report him to authorities, to protect her and others. So many people failed her.
Many years ago the law did not require reporting. Women & girls were victum shamed into keeping quiet. Tragic.
My husband & I Pastored churches.... we weren't taught to have background checks & immediately call the police until we worked with Foursquare churches in 1990. ❤
Morals and human decency require that anyone who ever learns of such abuse should report immediately. To say that "the Law did not require reporting " some time ago is totally irrelevant. Anyone who covers up child abuse or protects the abusers should be charged and gaoled if convicted. The Law of God is written on our hearts so the Law not requiring reporting is a futile and irrelevant argument. My immediate reaction when I found my son had been raped by my own husband (a church member and that it had been covered up by the Pastors of the church) is recorded in my own book "Father Provoke Not Your Child". Immediate reporting no matter who is involved is imperative.

Thank God she is speaking out! It reminds me to NEVER get too comfortable when my kids are at church and involved in various activities. Those of you who are criticizing her for "waiting 30 years" need to keep a few things in mind: 1. Unless you've been through it yourself, you don't grasp the full power of fear, manipulation, and shame. There are countless examples where victims of sexual abuse have symptoms that linger for decades. 2. She clearly states in this interview that she was already telling people (even starting at 17), but she and the people supporting her found it necessary to cast an ever-widening net because the story kept falling on deaf ears. 3. As she herself describes, telling the story doesn't just affect her; a bombshell revelation like this can disrupt many lives, so that can cause reluctance to talk about it.

A big part of this tragic story is that James Robison put Robert Morris in the ministry as an associate evangelist when he was still a baby Christian. Robert Morris has said in the sermon that is being widely reviewed that his late adolescent womanizing was still in his system while he was married to his wife and caused problems in his intimacy with his wife. He was not ready for the ministry; he needed more sanctification. The reference in 1 Timothy to not making a pastor out of a novice is something people should keep in mind. The whole reason why Robert Morris was able to worm his way into Cindy's life is because her family trusted him as a supposedly anointed up-and-coming minister of the Gospel which he in reality was not ready to be.

Randy, About two weeks before this story broke, I purchased several copies of Robert's book "Grace Period" for my Bible study group. I have not yet passed them out to the other members but am now questioning whether that is a good idea. My wife and I had been watching Robert's TV sermons every Sunday and felt his sermons were Biblically sound. I don't how well you knew him but do you think his books are Biblically sound?

Children rarely disclose abuse immediately. There is a great deal of manipulation by the perpetrator to silence the victim.

Cindy, as another woman who was sexually abused as a child, you did the right thing in bringing this to light. No one has any idea what you have been thru except those of us who have also been abused. I am in my late 70's and I could never share my story until my 60's when my young grandson was put in a position of sexual abuse. We need to do whatever necessary to make the abusers stop!
It was brought to light already when she was 17, and the church, her family and him accepted his repentance, he was sent away from ministry into 2 years of counseling and this satisfied everybody involved so in 1989 they signed off on him going back into ministry.
What seems to bring contention was that in 2004, she approached him for $50,000. Would you have done this?
I did not. I had to walk through forgiveness for my abusers, not exacting justice. Vengeance belongs to God and God only.
There is only one sin that is unpardonable and that is the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

You're conflating justice with vengeance. The Catholic Church put Spotlight on predatory priests. They had difficulty getting victims to talk and their stories were old as well.
The church paid out 2 billion dollars in restitution and priests were arrested.

Since hearing of this truly gut-wrenching story ,my prayers for the "young lady" involved have been that she didn't hate God. I am so very thankful that Cindy has held her faith in a God who sees, knows, and holds to account. This made my day, and I am grateful for this news cast.
He is untrustworthy! I do not believe he has walked in purity. He has lied and covered up. Anyway, that is not the point. He molested a child for 4 YEARS!
Another main point is that he disqualified himself from ministry by this despicable sin/crime. He hurt a child in ways I can't imagine. The harm he did to her life is horrible. My heart breaks for that little girl and all other children who have been sexual abused.😢

I pray he actually realizes the damage he did to that girl because he has yet to actually admit what he’s done. He has danced around it and he has minimized, but he has not admitted it.

Her parents were part of the 1987 disclosure in the church in Oklahoma. They all signed off on his repentance in 1987, he was disciplined, repented and sent for 2 years of counseling. They all signed off and accepted him back in 1989.

I was abused so many times when i was young but when i met Jesus i forgave all of them and was set free because of Jesus and now i can look at them without any judgement and that is only the applying of the word same as Jesus did now i do trauma counceling through applying the cross whst Jesus did and all the people i help is truly sit free without any grudges or regret or revenge

This is a very powerful testimony and one that truly reflects the power of a real salvation and not just religious non-sense. I wish I could say that about the rest of the comments. I imagine if Robert Morris was somehow arraigned, tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death by lethal injection, there would be some that call themselves Christians would be very happy to be there for the event. We live in a very sad, religious country.

What a wonderful woman of God. She is telling her story to be a voice for the victims who have none. She is correct also in saying that it is unbiblical for a man to remain in leadership who has taken part in this kind of abuse.

Just because we give forgiveness does not mean we forget what was done some behavior, you cannot come back from and regain your previous position. He’s showing himself to be weak in certain areas, and he should never be in a situation where he could abuse anyone else, and since pastors council, he would be in that position quite often.

She didn’t wait. She’s been bringing this up and complaining for decades. It’s just public now. Trauma impacts people different ways. In part, questions like this are why people are afraid and why they keep quiet. It’s a silencing question.

I met that pastor in Lakewood ranch florida a couple of months ago. He came to my local church to preach and me and my husband loved his preaching that day. I cannot express how my jaw dropped when I saw this story. I was molested as a kid and I am so disgusted this person ruined this woman’s life. I hope this man is put behind bars and I am so glad she spoken out no matter it was many years later, the lifelong pain and damage cannot be undone.

Who says the proper authorities weren't notified? And if the parents chose not to go to the authorities, what could pastors do who heard something, not the whole story? And when did she finally speak up? The Pastors can only do so much. As she spoke up, the right thing was done. He's out as pastor. I hope he works to help others struggling with sexual perversion know how destructive the actions are and how Christ can help them get delivered.
I pray she can continue to share her testimony and give victims courage to live and not be defined by trauma. Many are suffering in silence. Sometimes the rapists are not arrested. People don't understand that for a victim of child molestation it is a life sentence for the victim. Most of its effects are not even realized until twenty or more years after the initial incident occurred. In church leadership with background checks no child molester is allowed to serve in any capacity of the church where he/she would have one on one contact with children. This is ministry 101!

Churches are supposed to be safe places that protect children from predatory criminals, but so often they do the opposite.
I think the church is like a hospital . The church is a hospital for sick souls. Some has been cured , some being treated, some are non compliant and some are incurable !

I am proud of her for coming out with her story. I too am a preacher’s daughter who was molested not once but twice in my childhood. I too remember exactly what I had on. This has helped me get past what happened to me and bring out the anger that has been hidden.
I was my molested at 4 yrs. old. The shame that came still lingers some...after much counseling. I wasn't able to even accept what happened until I was 60 yrs old...by then, my life was broken in me. No longer can these predators run. No longer can the victims remain silent. 😭
The church still hides behind it's fine robes & pulpits.
