I was so stoked to watch his show in Indpls in 2013. Small shitty venue. There was a 55gallon trash can in front of the stage that staff were constantly dumping trash into. I could see his frustration growing. Finally he couldn’t take it and stopped performing, hopped down, grabbed the can and hauled it off stage. He returned, sat down and picked up where he left off, mentioning nothing.
I've been listening to this song for years; done my best to check out every new video that crops up from Kristian's live shows and this is, hands down, the best version of The Gardener I've seen.
The strings, the flute, the trumpet- seeing Kristian fall back in love with this beautiful song again. He's channelling something else here. I absolutely love it.
This is stunning, considering he wrote this song so long ago and would have played it countless times, I love how happy and invigorated he is with the arrangement, especially around 2:12
Em... wtf. This be the bestest shit I done ever heard man. Tallest Man On Earth takes my breath away but this shit done taken my soul into a vortex of emotional tranquility
Awesome, Check out his reaction to the horns at 2:12. Love it, sounds like that affect could be part of a 70s TV sitcom, Great group of musicians and Kristian is good as well :-)
Bought tickets for this show but couldn't go. Sad I didn't get to see this incredible rendition. I will always love your music and hope to see you play in this kind of setting some day.
Overall my favorite version has to be the solo version at KEXP from 2008, but I love the added instruments in this version, really glad I found it! I have family in CA so I'm tempted to try and go visit and see a show in November.
This is an amazing version! The strings and horns on this makes it even more exquisite. I also really adore how you seem to fall in love all over again with your well-known song in this arrangement.
Okay so... This song is hands down amazing we all agree! But this performance is something else eff me... From a craft perspective... everything is just so perfect in places where there are so many potential moments for mistakes ... its just ahhhhhh how is this possible ???? The flow between every single participant can only be called "understanding" of each other and what they are doing. I am genuinly in awe!!! This is the single best performance I have seen in 15 years of professional music experience!
I was at this concert. I can see myself actually in these clips! But I have to say, this whole show could be released as a live album...it was incredible live and it sounds just as amazing in these videos. yMusic was great!
kristian you'll probably never see this but if you have a minute what would the chords to the gardener be in standard tuning? im no good at deciphering your songs cause your so dam talented but i really badly want to cover that song, any help would be appreciated, from anyone else too
I love you, some told me I like you. They were right. Your music torches my soul, I can not tell you how much I blastered you tunes in my car, house, on the wall. You speak to my soul. I love you, you look your voice. Marry Me. We can be Poets and I can be your head garden lady ;
Not really, I don't think. The song is about "killing" the parts of himself that are unworthy of the love of his beloved. The runner -> the part of him that, well is tempted to run. The spy -> the part of him that is anxious (both possessive and spying and avoidant and burning the evidence). The "leak" is the weirdest one, but he pretty clearly identifies this verse as being about lying. Essentially the poetic idea of the song is to capture being loved inspiring the process of becoming a better person (cultivating your garden) via symbolically "killing" the parts of yourself that would prevent that otherwise. Which is a good thing. That's why it's a joyful song. :)

I was at this show! The trash can is a memory I’ve always loved.
This guy is so underrated. His stage presence. The fact that his records sound just like he does live. His songwriting ability. He is a legend
I'm always amazed at how he never trips over the cord.

03:00 hit me like a truck, likewise ive watch almost every video over the past few years, fun to see that he continues to make changes to old songs!
he really has refined his voice over the years
Good one here. Although I disagree. That version he does in that old music shop, is, just precious.
It's truly the most joyous version, and that counts for SO much.
Wait till you’ve seen his performance with the Amsterdam Sinfionetta.
What a magical moment they created. That flute part is fantastic!
That section from 2:50-3:20 is just something else
Dillon Adams Good entertainer 😂
This is pure magic.
The strings, the flute, the trumpet- seeing Kristian fall back in love with this beautiful song again. He's channelling something else here. I absolutely love it.
I love how happy he seems now a days
Split from his wife , happy days
yea the Dark Bird Is Home era has gone
I can remember finding out about The Tallest Man on Earth and loving this song immediately. So much so I play it. This is beyond beautiful.
It’s not just the deeping and enrichment of the song by the ensemble, Kristian is operating on a different wave length.
his face at 2:18 is so good. it's like he cant even believe how good it sounds
That`s exactly what I thought... He couldn`t believe it. haha
I almost cry when he starts dancing with the music. Kristian, one of my favorite musicians.
BRB putting this on repeat forever
The best version of this song. Jeez dude you killed it at this concert
I'm convinced the dislikes must have been mistakes. This is too joyful to not out a smile on anyone's face
This man is a living legend. Absolutely brilliant.

That moment just fills me with joy I can't explain it
@@Angenga me too
Em... wtf. This be the bestest shit I done ever heard man. Tallest Man On Earth takes my breath away but this shit done taken my soul into a vortex of emotional tranquility
This is the best video on the internet
flute player kills it
I love watching performances where the artists just get super in to the song and lost in the performance like Kristian is here. So good.
Love the trumpets and wind!
it's sooo beautiful this version, i'd like to see it live
Awesome, Check out his reaction to the horns at 2:12. Love it, sounds like that affect could be part of a 70s TV sitcom, Great group of musicians and Kristian is good as well :-)
The fact that he's clearly having so much fun is so endearing. Probably my favourite rendition.
These instruments bring the song to a whole new level !
Amazing! Thanks for internet, recordings, and people using their talents because that's the best thing to do with them and they love enough to share.
Stunning

this is magnificent
This was the best concert I have ever been to. Thank you, Kristian, and yMusic.

This video is the definition of, “You had to be there...”

like a legend coming back, you just gettin' better and better, salutes for you man !
Amazing arrangement on an old song of his. gotta think this was the accompaniment he heard in his head when he recorded this in his kitchen years ago.
Anyone know if there is a studio recording of this version? It's absolutely incredible.
COME TO BRAZIL OMG
Holy shit this man is a hero
❤️❤️
Just wishing that somehow he will play with Billy Bragg. I love this song in ways I am sad to admit too.
can someone tell me what guitar strings he use?
That flute!!!!
Will we ever get a studio version of this? That would just be... golden.
idk how you could hope to improve upon the fantastic live recording we have here
Very random question: what hair products are you using? I'm struggling to find something that works on stage, without it getting into my eyes...
instrumentation is amazing
kristian you'll probably never see this but if you have a minute what would the chords to the gardener be in standard tuning? im no good at deciphering your songs cause your so dam talented but i really badly want to cover that song, any help would be appreciated, from anyone else too
The tuning is DADF#AD and the chords are on Ultimate Guitar, just type on the Gardener Tallest Man and you'll find it. Hope this helps!

My goodness.
Veldig bra!

The band should stand up but still great.
David Spade on Trumpet
The lyric is kinda dark for such an uplifting and happy tune
