Awesome, I want one. Cheap and fun. Is the engine capable of receiving midi CC though? Reface DX is full CC, so you could break out the engine with a BCR2000 or something.
+jabberwalky From what I am reading, not really. Only the front panel controls can get midi messages. The Engine on the other hand, only accepts Sysex.
Am I the only one that notices a slight difference in the tone between the DX and the volca even when they are playing the same patch, that may just be down to different amps inside the synths or a slight difference in the sound of the operators but either way it sounds brilliant and it's good that it doesn't sod exactly like a DX, it has its own unique sound.
Also, the volca does not accept velocity through midi and the slider on the unit has to be used. Velocity can dramatically change an FM sound so I expect that is part of the reason.
+Andrew Piatek Listen, the Volca is a very musical instrument, and also more stable than for example the DX7. Of course the DX7 with its keyboard and size, will have a more inspiring feeling and look to it, but knowing how much easier it is to program the Volca FM one can easily sit down and instantly program something great; only your mind will be the limit of all the sounds that might be created on this synth. I agree that it certainly can give you the feeling of a cheap plastic box, but the sound is what counts in the end, so I don't think its really fair to call it cheap.
AspleniumHexe I got into the synthesizer hobby back in 1988. I like the form factor of the instruments introduced back then. I like t-octave keyboards, 19" rack modules, drum machines, sequencers, even Atari ST. The new plastic DJ/EDM oriented stuff is not something I would've signed in back then. Not my thing. I still have Yamaha QY10, which is VHS tape size, which is I think similar to volca size. But the QY10 is a fully featured sequencer you can build entire musical arrangements on. The volca series, once again, seems to be geared to DJ/EDM types, which I am not.
I feel like the Volca FM is great for high harmonics in the bass range but, it's a little too tingy in the high end. I think this may be so yamaha won't sue lol

volcaってmidi inしかできないからDAWで制御するもんやと思っとったけど、音源モジュールとして使うんか！DX7のハード音源単体のためにはコスパ悪いけど、扱いやすいシーケンサーも兼ねてるからいいかもな笑
