    I was born and raised in Long Beach California where Sublime is from. I had the honor of seeing them before they were big in a backyard party back in the early 1990's. I can still remember the vibe of their music when I saw them play and how it made me feel. It was something really special and different from anything I had ever heard at that time. And yes they had lots of influence from Mexican culture growing up a white boy in the LBC just like I did. The Mexican brothers were our homies and family.

    Im very glad to hear you exploring the music period loosly defined as "the 3nd wave of ska" 311 and sublime were part of an era where the resurgance of Ska music rooted in the 60's (Al Capone - Prince Buster) that be came re popularised in the 80's (Ruder Than You - The Bodysnatchers) then made a comeback in the 90's. Sublimes influence on music of this era cannot be understated. You can see Sublimes influence on music still, in bands like "10ft Ganja Plant"

    • @jackstrawful
      @jackstrawful Місяць тому +1

      Despite wearing their influences firmly on their sleeves, they were amazingly innovative, blending styles in a way that hadnt quite been done before, at least not as well, from ska and reggae to SoCal punk, along with heavy doses of Chicano and hip hop cultures. They presaged the impact hip hop would have on rock, and youth culture in general, later in the decade.

    Bradley was ahead of his time. He encapsulated that moment in time. With song about the LA riots, loving Reggae and being an addict in the most beautiful way only he could.
    Sublime is the sh!t, almost every song is about that early 90s rage and beauty.
    I was introduced to sublime in Venice when I was 10 years old, I stopped on the boardwalk and watched him perform for about 40 mins, my family walked away and lost me for that time. He was playing Jimi and then turned it into Soul Rebel by Bob Marley as he rapped the chorus. I was hooked. He has always been an inspiration and he adopted that chicano/cholo culture.
    RIP Bradley & Lou Dog 😢

  • @jackstrawful
    @jackstrawful Місяць тому

    Damn, the parts you didnt remember ARE the song to me - that was my whole original conception of Sublime - sweet sounding songs w/ hard AF lyrics. This is from their self-titled third album, easily their most commercially successful, but their debut, 40 oz. To Freedom, will always be one of my favorite albums of all time. Every song is a banger, a wholly original (despite containing six covers) blending of reggae, ska, and SoCal punk with heavy Chicano and hip hop influence - it is very much OF 1992, yet also completely timeless. Ending with a song of appreciation for the wisdom emparted to them by KRS-ONE, and a heavenly, acoustic rendition of By the Rivers of Babylon, it's amazingly confident and comfortable with itself for a debut from some 20 year old kids.

    Brad spent some time in the Virgin Islands with his dad when he was 11 which exposed him to Reggae His dad influenced him with guitar and the Jim Croce sound while he learned piano from his mother. Yes, he passed away just after their major label release in 96. It's very sad as Bradley was a great songwriter and would have def had some more hits. You have to react to "Badfish" It's a great tune

    Brad Nowell unfortunately left this world at the young age of 28 due to a heroin overdose. He was found in his hotel room on the ground with his dalmatian, Louie or Lou Dog, whimpering next to his body. He left behind a wife and 1-year-old son.
    Fast forward 28 years and his son Jakob, at the age of 28, has reunited the band's remaining members and stepped into his dad's place actually using and playing all of his dad's old equipment.
    I would also like to suggest some No Doubt. Mainly the songs "Don't Speak" "I'm Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs." This was Gwen Stefani's original band. A punk rock band, and she and her band were extremely close to Brad and Sublime in the 90's.

    Bradley was part of the 27 club, I think. Also the dog was his dog Louie.
    These guys give off the good vibes because they're reggae/ska adjacent. They're somewhere in between the Mexican culture, hip hop, punk rock, and Ska. Bradley Nowell was a genius and yeah they are gangster AF. Their whole catalog is great. Every tune people suggest is correct. They're that good. My favorite is that they did a song about the LA Riots called April 26, 1992. As powerful as Rage, but a vibe!
    And Don is 100% right about Violent Femmes. I'm also picturing him all geeked out on acid. Absolute legend.

    Sublime is always just some chill music to listen to. Id also recommend
    Badfish - sublime
    Good feeling - Violent femmes
    Some Queens of the Stone Age and Interpol would be cool too 😎

    You guys should listen to their song: "April 29th 1992" from the Same album. It's about being in LA during the Rodney King riots. Or if you want another vibe like "Santeria", their song "Badfish" is one that takes me back and gives me that summer, youth feeling. I'm sure you've heard it even if you don't know it. They had many bangers though. Classic.

    The singer Brad has a son who is now playing with the band. He's sounds just like his dad

    I feel like this song is very similar to “The Last Resort” by Papa roach. Where everybody’s vibing to the song so much that they don’t realize it’s a pretty dark song

    When I use to Uber drive people would freak out when I would get them to realize this song is about plotting murder.

    Second Hand Smoke is my favorite from them. Everyone always goes to 40oz, which is a classic, but Second Hand is just fire....
