Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic Video Dean!!!! Thank you so much for the break down on the soaping business. Besides making some of the most beautiful soaps on UA-cam you reach out to help others. You Sir, are a international treasure!!! 😊
Quite a few other soap makers have made videos and gone into more details, like marketing, markets and labor costs. I just wanted to make this video about the cost of items to make the soap. There are lot of others costs that you need to factor in, like packaging, labels, dye's, clays etc. Online shop also cuts into the cost along with payment gateways like Paypal. But everyone is different as some dont sell online and just go to markets but even those (most of the time) you need to pay to sell.
Very excited to see that soap inventory program! Great video. I was just going through that process yesterday, anticipating adjusting my prices as they haven't changed in several years. Good for people to see that to make just a basic living they'd have to make, cut, package, market, sell and ship, almost four loaves of soap (your size) per day, 7 days a week. Not including all the other costs and administrative work involved.
Dean I’m literally 2 weeks into this and have watched 100’s of videos! Yours is to the point and easy to understand. Thank you for this! This helped me so. Cant wait to try your system.
Excellent Video!! I have struggled with my pricing trying to stay competitive. I realize I have to cover my costs accurately and not be concerned with others who's criteria is to always lowball pricing. If they stopped to figure out the cost they would realize they are not making much or nothing at all and also lowering the standard in the industry. Thank you Dean :)
This is my issue ive lost my job that gave me continual income to support my soap craft i just got started and i dont have alot of the good basic equipment i need but i continue to try to do this i live out in the country is there a way i can deliver from my door to my customers i need pointers on this so much!! This video is so useful im downloading this as a reference..i think i need to scale down my high top fance embedded designs for a more beautiful simple bar of soap for sure! Thank you for the info, Dean. I look forward to your software/online database. Very generous of you on the free usage! Your videos are always a joy to watch.
You are so helpful, I am not going into business, but I do make soap for a lot of people. I also make and donate to the church. I have enjoyed so much watching your videos. Thanks Dean for sharing everything With the newbies and the experience soaper. This new program you have come up with, will be a god send to a lot of people.
I am so excited about the soap inventory!!! I hate programs that are desktop bound as I bounce back and forth between stock at the house and down at the shop. I do everything on my phone or tablet so this would be something I would for sure use and could toss out the 2 program system I have now.
Dean, you are such a nice person to share this knowledge and to create that website!! I know what it takes to do that as I'm in the industry. You are an inspiration to us all!!
Loved this video. It'll be good if word got out about properly pricing soaps. I saw soaps for $3 AUD on Etsy and got sad people don't value their time or supplies. Well done on the Soap inventory. Database based forms yesss. Here I was utilising my old year 10 Excel spreadsheet knowledge like a chump.
Dean, thank you so much for breaking this down! I am an amateur soaper in the US, and I love the idea of soapinventory.com. This pricing breakdown is REALLY helpful too. Thanks for all you're doing for us soapers, mate!
Just keep it mind this only covers MY experience and there are things missing from the final cost. Like wrapping, shipping from suppliers, your time etc.
That system looks great. For the breakdown, more things to consider include cost of insurance, cost of renting your workspace (if applicable), utilities, equipment maintenance or replacement, and packaging. All of these should be considered when figuring out the price point at which you can sell your product to sustain and grow your business.
Yes very true. Infact there is so many factors to consider when pricing your product. What I wanted to do in this video was just work out a basic price for the ingredients of the soap made. Everyone is different, some have a workspace, others use a kitchen, some have a few bits of equipment - some have too many to count.
But you haven't included your time, packaging, things like gloves and any other disposable thing you use per loaf. if you did how would that impact your margins?
Not sure, when I make soap I make a lot of soap at one time so I would not count gloves. However my packaging box is $0.30 extra. But in this video I was only working out what the cost to make the soap, not advertising, equipment or packaging costs. Just the soap itself.
Catriona Aldridge Why would anybody work for free? 😉 Its is very simple- if you run a business that can’t pay you a salary - min. $13,- pr. Hour. Then it’s not a healthy business. Generating a profit in your first year as a company, after significantly more outlay than following years should require, can't be expected. But business should already after year 3 be able too provide you with a MINIMUM salary that says 40 x $13 * 4,33 = $2251,60,- monthly 2251,50 * 12 = $27.019,20,- annual. (Before tax ect).
@@JannieMette You are actully right .I started a business course 9 weeks ago to help with all that side of it .And it seems as though the advice I got was't right .Not sure what my friends thinking was behind that .But looking bk from what I know now .It was't good advice . 😊
@@catrionaaldridge654 It doesn't matter what you make to sell, If you do not charge for your time you are working for free. I have a business that require me to drive. My way of calculating is: I am only willing to drive up to 30 min. without charging. IF it takes me longer than that to get to a client I charge additional to cover for my time and gas. They don't know that because I added into my per hour time. I also have a P.T. business making soap and do something similar. Follow the formula on video+shipping and handling + packaging + my time (depending how much your time is worth). My soaps sell for $8 all the way up $12, they weight 3-4oz. I sell enough orders from repeat customers that my profit pays me at $30 per hour. My take home sometimes is over 30k+ year, this includes if I work full days on weekends. My full work day is 6 hrs. Sometimes my children help and get paid handsomely, I pay them per piece and I can reach way over 50k yr profit. This coming year I expect to exceed 74k profit.

This is a great informative video Dean. Thankyou. To make any kind off profit, I might have to commandeer the kitchen, not easy with a hubby that brews Ale there. LOL. Take care & have a Great Weekend. ❤🙂🐶

your week in this video are you calculating 7 days a week/365 days a year or a normal work week of 5 days a week? do you calculate yours for every fo or just average it out?
It's worked on a 7 day/365 days. If it was 5 days / 261 days then it would be more per day/week/month and year. I normally cover the cost of the fragrance if it's more and profit if it's less. Either way, all my bars are the same price.

Dean Wilson Hi Dean may I ask next water you 0 do make your own distilled? Sorry just I been taught to use distilled water?
I buy it from the shops. But if you boil water you get the same result. Just let it cool down.
Dean Wilson thank you 😊
Boiled water is not distilled, unless the water vapor has been condensed and collected.
Oh, I was told you can boil water kettle and it will do the same thing. But good thing I buy my water.

Where did the 520 come in with fragrance? I’m stuck on that part of my calculation since its not a bulk size
520 ml is the bottle size.

Hi, I think the video pretty much explains itself about how much things cost me to make soap.
Soap is beautiful
I would gladly spend $5+ on your soap. I think your soaps are amazing
Thank you so much Dean, I needed this info, also, I notice you never say anything about using lye, which I dont want to use, is that correct?.
Caustic soda + water = lye. I don't need to use it on the M&P videos, but I did a video on just lye water.
Ty needed that info
I have just started making soaps and watch all your videos for inspiration :) This video, is so helpful for newbies like me :) Thank you so so much.... keep making lovely soaps, keep inspiring others, and have fun !
Thanks Dean for the clear information on costing. Will be waiting to learn from the soap inventory.com. Thanks a lot.
your week in this video are you calculating 7 days a week/365 days a year or a normal work week of 5 days a week? do you calculate yours for every fo or just average it out?
It's worked on a 7 day/365 days. If it was 5 days / 261 days then it would be more per day/week/month and year.
I normally cover the cost of the fragrance if it's more and profit if it's less. Either way, all my bars are the same price.
thanks Dean. I look forward to your software
Omg thank you!!!
Your welcome :)
Hi,in fragance oil of MP you write 35.46/520 what is 520? Thank you.
520 = 520 ml of fragrance. This is how my supplier sells them.
@@DeanWilson thank you so much
