  • Come follow along as we visit the oldest known pictograph in NC. Paint Rock is a 5,000 year old Pictograph located just outside Hot Springs, NC headed toward the Tennessee state line. It was surreal putting myself in the same place the Native Americans used so long ago as a guide toward the sacred hot springs. Enjoy!

Awesome video. I live on that side of the river in hot springs. I’ve lived there for over 45 years.

    👍
The TN line is where the pavement starts, right in front of Paint Rock.
The only pictograph that is still visible that I know of, is visible from the road on the right side of the rock (NC) on an East facing flat panel. It is very faint. The pictograph is orange/red and the rock is tan and about 30 feet from the ground.
The cave is small and empty. If there were pictographs in there, they're gone now. It's pretty sketchy getting inside..

enjoyed your video. we were there just the other day for the first time. So sad to see all of the vandalism but still found it very interesting and happy to be able to be right there where history was made.
Side story, The following comes from the subject of Stoneman's raid throughout Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina.
In 1865 Union Colonel Isaac M. Kirby's Brigade of the First Division was given orders to leave his camp on Lick Creek near Bulls Gap and go on a scout towards Asheville, NC. He was further more to "take the town without loss of life if he should do so."
Being unfamiliar with Western North Carolina, he felt very uneasy as he traveled into the rugged land near Hot Springs, NC (I think at that time it was known as Warm Springs) He stopped his brigade at Paint Rock for a rest. During this rest period his men were strolling along the foot of the cliff. The men amused themselves by writing their names with charred sticks on the smooth rock wall. Their commander on the other hand saw this narrow pass running along the French Broad River as an area that might cause his command to be trapped.

Thanks for the knowledge.I like to give credit to paint rocks makers, it has been around for 5000 years, was not given its name in the civil war time period, it was thought to originally mark the healing waters of the natural hot springs by native people.

@@CarolinaOutdoorChannel I agree fully. Thank you for your comments. The land mark is ancient and the ancestors of the Cherokee and other Native Americans are credited for the creation of the landmark. I just added in the bit about the Union Soldiers stopping by there on their way to Asheville from Bulls Gap in Tennessee. I had been studying the Battle of Asheville, 1865, for some time and ran across the documentation where they had stopped by on their way. I have found several instances such as this. One other was when the Union Troops had crossed into South Carolina from Savannah, GA they were camped near a bluff on the river near a cemetery and mentioned what they knew of the history of the Revolutionary War and that an old cannon was still there from the war. One other was when Sherman's troops were camped at Hanging Rock they made mentions also about the former battle that was fought there during the Revolutionary War...just found it all interesting that every generation recognizes the history that surrounds them and that they paused to feel that special feeling knowing they were visiting a historic site. I have know about Hot Springs for a long time but only recently learned about Paint Rock, I find it extremely interesting.
