    I think if you watch breaking bad identifying with Walt mostly, the "I am the danger" speech feels really badass, if you identify with Skyler mostly then it's kind of terrifying, and if you watch as a third party onlooker, without identifying with either, it's really funny. The show can be enjoyed on many different levels and after seeing way too many people react the first way, and many people react the second way, it's fun to watch people who can't take Walt and his ego seriously.

    • @viper2785
      @viper2785 21 день тому +6

      Right, yeah I can see where the girls are coming from, especially after rewatching a couple times.
      On one hand 1) Walt wants to keep her out of it to protect her, so she can't be implicated, and 2) and partially by extension, he doesn't want her to worry. Like he said, he NEEDS her to understand she's safe. I think that line can be taken at face value as a window into his motivations. While it works in his rhetoric to Skyler, he's also literally saying"please let me gaslight you", lol.
      On the other hand, he gets completely caught up in his ego when she starts (accurately) outlining the situation, the danger and the fear Walt is trying to repress.
      He wants so much to be in control, and even more to be SEEN as in control, that he huffs that copium and delivers that speech.
      So, he had good reasons, but loses himself and takes it too far, because his fragile ego has always been his biggest weakness. And especially coming off of the previous night's critical blunder with Hank, which prompted this whole convo anyway, I can see how that line delivery and his total lack of self awareness looks silly and cringe.

      They see Walter for exactly what he is. He wins because of the toxic father/son relationship he has over Jesse and because Gus is emotional over Max's death, the former doesn't exactly scream "moment of brilliance from an underestimated man" and he has nothing to do with the latter.
      I love Walter's character but laughing in this scene is absolutely appropriate and I've seen a bunch of people react like that. Walter spends most of the season getting outsmarted by Gus while Hank breathe down his neck and now that he is at his absolute lowest, he reaches his highest moment of delusion yet. The point of the scene is that he is, in fact, very much in danger. And a much worse person than Skyler thought.

It's not even that he is manipulative (Saul is, and i love his character), it's more so the fact that he is fake to himself. He never embraces his dark side fully. He's lashing out like a cornered animal. He doesn't actually believe that his family is safe, he's just telling that to himself and them because he can't admit otherwise. Walt believes that his family isn't in danger because of his product. The earlier scene wasn't a joke (despite the uncontrollable laughter it generated). He "knows" that his product is what's keeping Gus's business thriving. And he's also testing the boundaries of what he can get away with like a petulant child because he knows Gus is trying to play Jesse against him. And every moment Gus doesn't kill him or Jesse reaffirms this ego boost. And every success (like with Bogdan) reaffirms this ego boost. Remember, you get to see the goings on, but Walt still doesn't know that the Cartel angle is a thing that's been happening for these last few seasons. The hitmen were dealt with. The lab's been running smooth for months. Walt orchestrated Gale's death and there have been no repercussions. Walt thinks he has the leverage. You KNOW he doesn't. But, he doesn't know that.

    My take on Walt saying his family is fine is that he's lying to keep Skyler from going to the cops. Her going to the cops WOULD put his family in real immediate danger as Gus would move to clean house. Besides that, Walt doesn't like taking help and I think he would think of the cops dealing with Gus as a cop out (excuse the pun).
    The other side of that is that he's also lying to himself, to convince himself as much as Skyler that he's still in control and that he is doing what he says he wants to do which is to provide for his family. He still believes that he's doing all of this for them, and admitting that he put them in danger would be counter to that.
    He's so confident in saying it because he has to to convince himself.

    Walt IS the danger, to those around him, as will be made abundantly clear in upcoming episodes and seasons.

  • @Gunleaver
    @Gunleaver 21 день тому +10

    Walt is not a compulsive liar, that's the exact 180 degree opposite of his problem. He hates lying, but it's necessary for his safety right now, and he DGAF. EVERYTHING he does in this episode that is "bad" is being truthful instead of lying. The "I AM the one who knocks" speech was not a lie, it was the truth slipping out from behind the mask. Taking Jr car shopping was all about flaunting the truth of his material wealth. He alienated Jesse with the truth of Gus' ploy. Mabel's bizarre fantasy cup story is based on absolutely nothing from the show. Seriously, her next bit about controlling the narrative is just a complaint that Walt is not doing a BETTER job of lying. The problem with Walt's lies is that he is not always very good at lying when he needs to be, and so he exposes the truth and then has to scramble to cover it up with more lies.
    Every lie he tells has a direct purpose and a very practical and realistic reason behind. There is almost no situation where Walt would have been better off telling the truth about his ACTIONS. Feelings and motivations, yes. He is dishonest about those all the time, even to himself (but who isn't? Did Hank admit the reason for pursuing the RV lead at the expense of returning to El Paso? Did Marie admit, until she was in custody, what she was doing at the open houses while Hank was rehabbing? Did Skyler come clean to the police when it was plainly the best way to get her drug-manufacturing husband out of her house and away from her children? Did she ever admit that all her actions wrt Walt and The Story have actually been about reasserting her control?) Walt does not lie compulsively or for shits and giggles, he lies to cover up his involvement in dangerous and criminal activity, and if there is any compulsive behavior, it is his self-sabotage of his cover and his stories.

    The part where Jesse gets the meth head out of the house by digging is actually more common than you think. Like how people on Adderall or Ritalin become hyper focused on tasks hence why it's used for ADHD, meth is like that 1000x. Add in the delirium and psychosis the meth induces and the user is extremely suggestible and paranoid so just implying certain things will make them believe it's a reality like there is some treasure buried or anything really, cameras or wire taps in the walls. Funny enough thousands of meth heads have been known to dig huge holes all on their own just cuz of the paranoia and hyper focus. It's interesting how they genuinely dislike Walter compared to any other people who I've seen react. If you root for Walter, then you only do so if you are able to put yourself in his shoes to some extent. I've never seen anyone react with laughter to I am the danger. It's usually horror if you identify with Skylar or "whoa badass" if you identify with Walter. This is especially so in the context of what Walt/Jesse just did to Gale. In the context of what just happened to Gale he is sorta...the danger.

  • @Keladinus

    My take on Walt's claim that 'the family is safe' is that it's just another extension of his ego talking. Walt doesn't want to be seen as weak and vulnerable by his own wife. He wants to be the tribal warrior that fights off the wolves and bears while his woman tends to the camp and young ones. Is this a realistic perception, given his reality? No. But Walt is not a rational man.

    You guys realize, when you wonder why Walt thinks he is invulnerable because everything he tries against Gus blows back, that none of that blowback affects Walt directly? Gus cut Victor's throat, because he CAN'T cut Walt's. He sends the cleaning ladies back to Honduras, because he CAN'T punish Walt for revealing the lab to them. He can't lift a finger against Walt, because he is engaged in a war with the cartel and can't afford the loss of income, and because the cartel wants his product and if he kills Walt, they will not believe his source has dried up and will keep pressing Gus for something he can't give. At THIS point, he actually CANNOT do anything to Walt, and Walt is RIGHT to realize that.
    Anyway, his efforts against Gus are all due to his awareness that if factors, over which he has no control and no way of knowing, change, Gus can and will get rid of him. That's why he's looking for any way out he can find. A better question might be why does Gus keep doing things against the cartel, when every ploy we see him try has blown back. His games with the twins just made them and Bosa more suspicious and determined, his elimination of Bosa seems to have caused the cartel to take off the gloves. His defending his truck from a hijacking has resulting in their using more lethal methods to hit his trucks. And this is all because he could not be satisfied with the excellent quality of meth that Gale was capable of producing, he had to go out and recruit the best cook he could find, despite all the red flags and warning bells with Walt. And then Gus had to swing his dick around on the Tomas issue, only for it to blow up and lead to a fatal confrontation between his cooks and his dealers. He could not take the L and turn around and tell the rest of his dealers "this is what happens when you hire kids, and cross my cooks, behave now" and politely request Walt and Jesse bring such issues to him in the future, and to let him know when his solutions are unsatisfactory. But that might mean letting someone else think they are his equals or betters, and Big Man Gus with his superlab and his brilliant cover story and his friendly relationship with the DEA, does not treat his hirelings like equals. Everyone must kiss his ring, and so he tries to eliminate Walt for daring to side with his partner, when Gus's employees hurt the partner's family, Walt sees through his blatantly transparent efforts to get Gail up to speed and Gus loses a chemist and a thug. And Gus still is not learning. He has repeatedly failed in his efforts to estrange Walt and Jesse, but he's still trying, and only got as far as he did, because Walt's emotional myopia alienated Jesse when he tried to expose Gus' tactics. Does he realize that on both the missions Mike took Jesse on, he did not comply with the plan and did his own, unpredictable thing, both in the fake robbery attempt and with the meth heads? He said at their first honest meeting with Walt that Jesse can't be trusted, and Walt said "He does what I say". Walt was telling Gus "YOU can't trust him, I CAN." And Gus has not been listening.
    Gus is Walt with a slightly different skillset, but the exact same ego issues and need for control and power. He's not better than Walt, he's definitely not smarter. He's just a little further down the road and has acquired more stuff. He has the same emotional weaknesses and mental blind-spots. Contrasting Walt and Gus is not nearly as useful an exercise as one might think. This is just halfway through the season, which means we are at a low point for the protagonist. The antagonist always looks invincible at this point in the story. Did anyone think in Episode 6 of the prior season that there was ANY way Walt could beat the Salamanca twins? How much longer did they last?

    • @SuzakuX
      @SuzakuX 21 день тому

      Gus is absolutely better than Walt. Gus's only mistake was bringing Walt in in the first place. Walt's own meth empire doesn't last a year. He's narcissistic, volatile, and careless.

I wonder why females see a change like this in a man especially someone they depend upon dangerous or selfish, by that measure everything men do to get more abilities and/or money can be described selfish if they get an ego boost from it... doesn't make sense.

    Yup and Walt feels he doesn't have control over his work or Jesse and Gus knows Jesse's loyalty to Walt is something that Walt has control over Jesse just the fact that he got Jesse to kill for him he knows Jesse didn't want to do that based on how he felt after and he knows he can take that away from Walt if he played it right with Jesse he has to earn it with Jesse because he knows he hates him right now but he knows all Jesse wants is to be thought of as someone valuable and respected. Just like when Jesse was dating Jane he wanted to be introduced to her dad as a guy she is dating and she didn't Jesse doesn't want to be looked at as dumb and a criminal even though what he does is criminal but he didn't want to be the loser guy that the girl doesn't want to introduce to their parents and that the parents would look down on, same with his parents they make him feel that way with his brother that he is not a good example and they don't like them to be close because they don't want the little brother to look up to someone like him, and although it is understandable Jesse knows he would not ever want his little brother to take the path he did but no one thinks that of him they all think he dumb and doesn't care when he can be ditsy he does care and would never do that to his brother and he tried to tell Jane not to get back on it but he was depressed and she wanted to be there for him and got him into the worse stuff.

    There are characters for everyone in this show, but I loved Walt's character arc the most out of this show, Jesse is a very close second.
    Walt started the show as an innocent and oafish school teacher who felt he was owed a life much more extravagant than he has. He made moves towards obtaining that better life, a life of power, something he could control instead of always being at the mercy of those who held power over him. Every little bit he obtains power he has a moment of self reflection of how good it feels. He made drugs for others, but his drug was pride and power.

    Whoever wrote Walt's character has an immense insight into psychology. I completely relate to him. I have a neurodivergent executive function disorder but also have an IQ over 140, which itself is a condition referred to as 2e that presents in less than 1% of the population. I have trouble with social interactions among many other things. This has led to me not having what most people would consider to be a successful life in spite of the level of intellect indicating that I should be highly successful. However, when I get backed into a corner by awkward or stressful situations I try to correct the situation any way I can which people usually react to the same way these ladies react to Walt. They don't understand what I'm saying and they don't take me seriously, but in the back of my mind I know I can go full bore and basically nuke everything to stop the situation that is distressing me. I don't want to do this but the more desperate I become, this rapidly becomes the only viable option. It is a constant struggle to control these things, and the best solution I have found is to isolate myself as much as possible. Walt's personality seems to align very closely with my own experiences, it's very interesting.

    It’s funny how angry some people are getting that you laughed at Walt’s blowfish moment. At this point, Walt is struggling. He can’t stop working for Gus. He knows Gus wants him dead and is trying to turn Jesse against him. He doesn’t have an exit strategy yet. He doesn’t feel in control. Skyler touches a raw nerve by pointing this out, so he responds by lashing out in a desperate attempt to convince her and himself that he’s pulling all the strings. There is something very wrong if you get this upset over your wife thinking that you’re not a murderer. Walt is smart and scary, but he’s also egotistical, naive, and frankly pathetic is many situations. Even Walt doesn’t think what he said was “badass.” You can tell by his expression that he regrets the words that just came out of his mouth (Bryan’s acting is impeccable.)
