The original tank makers would be amazed at the techniques and tools employed in this reproduction then burst into raucous laughter at how complicated the production was..
What amazes me the most here is the trouble the original manufacturer went to, to produce this toy. This wasn't a cheap toy to make especially considering that there weren't any cnc machines in 1918. The fit and tolerance of the original parts were of high standard. A high end toy for the day.
It really is nuts when you think about it. Parts of the process were still probably done by hand. The only thing I can think of that would have been automatically machined would have been the gears, because at that point there were automatic gear mills. If you've never been to the American Precision Museum in Vermont, I highly recommend it
@@skyraider87 They did have mass production, it was pretty much the end of WW1 so a lot of companies that were set up for arms manufacture went back to making their original products but, unlike today, they didn't have injection molding plastic and cnc machines. His job is impressive, I have no doubts about how qualified he's on restoration, but it's funny see that mostly parts were remade instead of "restored", still amazing job, keep the amazing job pal ;)
Let’s not forget the fact that the original toy was manufactured using basically none of the equipment that Chip was able to utilize. It’s so amazing to me how the craftsman of yesteryear were able to produce things like this. That aside, it’s also an amazing use of conventional machining and CNC technology in this video. Really cool and fun to watch.
As a software engineer and amateur maker, I'm just astounded and vastly impressed how they designed the entire thing without computers. I'm so used to tools like Fusion 360 and Lightburn that the idea of doing anything but my initial draft on paper is mind-boggling. I get that it can be done obviously (and have done small-scale projects without because it's quicker sometimes -- but that's normally in cases where extremely precise measurements aren't needed), but something like this is insane.

This seems to be the most intense and extensive restoration yet. Looks like you implemented some new tricks/tools along the way as well. I'm always amazed at your skill and the finished product. Excellent work, I've missed your bi-monthly videos, good to see you back in action.
Welcome Back! I've missed you and your wonderful restorations! This is without equal the most comprehensive, spectacular Restoration I have ever seen. Bar none. Your use of computer driven machinery, and arduous, painstaking handwork were and are exemplary! Watching the dis-assembly, I was stunned by how many parts and pieces there were! So much had to be fabricated!! I actually own an original Structo Tank identical to this one, and I sent you a video of it some time ago. The 3-Spring clockwork motor is strong as hell climbing over things!! Watch out, Kitty!! Congratulations on a masterpiece of restorative art. It is wonderful having you back!! Best, Stephen
As you started remaking the parts I saw this as a Ship of Theseus situation. At what point does it stop being a Structo product and begin being a Chip Channel recreation? But having a working recreation that rivals the original is well worth it. I truly admire your skills.
Thanks soo much for watching Carmen Costa! And very true, at this point the majority of the tank was replaced, it's unfortunate it was in such rough condition. I would love to find an original tank in better condition.
I'm sure every kid that had this new was extremely happy with it, but your work is very impressive, and this tank never looked this good brand new! Awesome!
You can tell this is a labor of love. What may have cost $10-$14 back when it was made, would probably cost someone $600 after the time and materials today!.....don't get me wrong, amazing work!

My prior comments being said, if you were to call this a reproduction of a 1918 tank, I would give this video great marks (please just tell me the original parts were saved and salvaged though!). I loved watching the machine work being done in this video and am jealous of all the awesome tools you have at your disposal. Again, please just call it a reproduction and all is good!

Only 30 seconds in and I simply can't resist to comment already. I absolutely love the gorgeous green tow truck. I nevertheless guess the next restoration is a bigger respectively stronger wrecker. Because this one really struggled to lift and tow a big heavy tank. The front wheel nearly got off the ground and therefore the steering became pretty light = resulting in dangerous driving. I'm not completely sure but I thought to hear the crane material and chain groaning/moaning the way overstressed metal/material often does before breaking or at least bending. 😁 ;-) Now back to another great video...

Ill have to say, this resteration is the simplest looking one to date for me yet it had a tremendous amount of hidden parts. I never would have guessed.
Without your sophisticated equipment and good old fashioned know how, such a complex restoration would be practically impossible. Superb job!
This seems to be the most intense and extensive restoration yet. Looks like you implemented some new tricks/tools along the way as well. I'm always amazed at your skill and the finished product. Excellent work, I've missed your bi-monthly videos, good to see you back in action.
Do you mean bi-monthly as in twice a month or once every two months
@@fbiagent626 Twice per month.

A beautiful example of vintage mecanical art. Totally zen now. 🙂 Superb craftmanship and a person with a vast amount of patience.
What a whim, congratulations on doing it well, almost no one today does it well, I'm a perfectionist, I loved your care for details! congratulations.
I came here to either upvote this comment or make it myself. Glad I'm not the only one.
Watching this video was time well spent! You have an impressive array of equipment and I enjoy watching how you can use different ways & means to accomplish the same restoration tasks. This restoration went beyond anything I've ever seen; well done! I'm so glad you're back!
Yes definitely thank you very much 😊 ☺
Finally he came back! Thanks for your existence!
Ha, thanks Carlos Silva!! I'm soo happy to be back too!
We are happy as well! Welcome back, sir. In the meanwhile we revisited your awesome remarkable restorations. Glad that you came back. Thanks.
@@ChipChannelRestorationswhat's happen with the channel?
Well said,always enjoy these videos
Damn amazing restoration. Glad you're back!
Its one thing to be in possession of such awesome tools and equipment, its another thing to know how to use it. Very enjoyable and satisfying to watch.
You tools and extensive knowledge of fabrication turned an impossible task into a work of art. This tank is beyond perfect and should be a point of pride for you for years to come. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. GOD Bless!
Literally the tank of Theseus
Or grandpa's axe= This is my grandpa's axe. My dad replaced the wood handle when it rotted, I replaced the head when it rusted, but it's still grandpa's axe.
You are the best channel I’ve ever seen, only one that does a complete restoration. The other ones should take notes. Amazing!!
I am 60 years old, my brother in law, was an engineer, an a president of a company. So I understand, you. Awesome tools you have.
Amazing work! This was a high-end toy for the VERY rich back in the day. I'm sure it race across the floor of very well to do family house.
This is mesmerizing, amazing quality work. Would love in the future if you could add chapters to videos like this so I could go back and rewatch certain segments. Not complaining, though, I'll take your videos however they come.
Thats a great idea!! I've seen other videos do it, just not sure how they accomplish that, I'm going to look into it for sure! Thanks for watching Jonathan Douglas!
It's been a bit, but man you really outdid yourself this time, that is one gorgeous restoration! Thank you.
I feel like this toy would have been one of the most expensive toys in existence in 1918 as it is with all the crazy parts, and with all the work you put into restoring it, it's even more expensive today!
So glad to see you’re back. The time it took to do this and the patience and the skill is just amazing to watch. It turned out so awesome.
Priceless
100 plus
Hopefully you keep the old stuff you replaced. It still belongs to the tank, like the craftsmanship that went in to make it.
A real second chance for all.
(your special toy collection that is).
No plas
WOW!!!!! That's incredible, thanks for sharing that amazing restoration. The time and effort/ skills involved was way beyond what I expected. Great job 👍
This has to be one of your best restorations yet. The attention to detail, the superb engineering in recreating all those parts and the meticulous approach from start to finish. Simply outstanding. I was completely mesmerised by this restoration. Well done you.
I realized that this educational video doesn't show you how to create an aurora dome. I saw one of those things when I was in Cabrillo College during the mid-2000s.
You really love your hobby. You are so meticulous and precise at what you do. I can only imagine you, in another life, being a toy maker in a German village around the 1940s. All the children couldn't wait for their birthdays or Christmas to come around.
Hmmmm....Germany.....1940s. If thats what you think he'd be doing in 1940s Germany, You're looking at history through some EXTREMELY rose-tinted glasses! More likely he'd be making guns or bombs. I can't believe you wrote that and thought, "Yeah! 1940s German toymaker! Yeah!" 😂
@@TheSoulCourier Try searching 1940s metal German toys, then get back to me,...Nimrod.
Trust me, you are truly a genius, my friend. It's just a tank, but you have put your heart and soul into rebuilding it. Wishing you all the best in 2025
**I speak for everyone when I say, this was the best "restoration" build I have ever seen. You earned and set yourself apart from every Tom, Dick and Harry with a sandblaster here on UA-cam.
No matter where you hail from, your hard work and tireless dedication is an American Dream come true.
We all applaud you, Sir.**
I just watched this entire video start to finish on our other channel. I could not look away. I’m talking had to pee, dying of thirst, sleeping significant other knee popping up to block the TV… did. not. look. away. All I want to do is metalwork now for the rest of my life. This was incredible.
I'm actually pretty proud of you, dude. That was a whole lot of manufacturing you had to do. I couldn't believe you just completely crafted the entire tread from scratch. And it wasn't just functional, it was beautiful. I guarantee it didn't look like that brand new.
Again chip you are the master of your trade , you got your hands and your tools to fix old toys.
Your channel has the wow factor👍
This tank restoration is totally next level!
Of course, your wonderful 🐈 meow, has the final say, purrrrrrfect!
Keep up the excellent work!
Your fabrication skills have increased tremendously, as have the capabilities of the machines in your shop. Very nice work!
Making those tracks must've taken AGES. Respect.
You are a genius. I can't believe how much skill and work went into restoring the tank. It was like watching a master clock maker at work. You have truly outdone yourself on this one.
Your tools, techniques, and determination are beyond staggering. Great job.
Antique toy ($25).. tools/technology ($250K).. time/labour ($2K).. finished product.. Priceless!! Thank you so very much again. Happy Holidays to you and your family and friends.
The most common type is a single line of code and the following code can also contain a number and the type is called the code in which the function
As satisfying as these videos are to watch, I can only imagine the level of hard work, time, and effort put into making them. I also assume there is a huge amount of satisfaction on your part after a job extremely well done!
It makes me think that way back when this toy was first made they didn’t have computers or laser cutters, but they still figured out how to make it!
Well an amazing amount of work went into this. They really built things well in the 1920's This has to be the most over-engineered toy I have ever seen. That fiber laser is a game changer, the temptation to bypass restore and rather forge anew is strong.
I have no idea how many hours this restoration must have taken you to complete, but one thing I am sure of is that you sir are a master of what you do. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
I am so blown away by your talent, expertise with this process! I’d pay to sit and watch you do this it’s simply brilliant.
You might learn a few things.
Absolutely amazing! You never fail to impress! Outstanding job 😊
Not many antique bits left !. But very impressive work
If I was this guy, once I had all the stuff to make one, I would manufacture in mass. I feel like this type of toys would sell well in our era.
Your restorations are amazing! The track looked like a piece of jewelry. And your equipment is unbelievable! Your channel is now my favorite. And your assistant (the cat) is adorable 😊
Nicely Done. One of your best works
This is an extraordinary impressive restoration Chip! Especially the way in which and the care with which you take care of all parts. I don't know the original, but it seems to me that your restoration is more beautiful than the original ever was.
Now back to another great video...
LOL I will definitely need to upgrade to a bigger tow truck! Thank you soo much for watching chru cas!
Dear @@ChipChannelRestorationsguy
You're welcome, it's my pleasure.
2) Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart to my comment. I always and totally appreciate both very much.
3) Im not sure but I guess I saw a bigger tow truck in your most interesting pile of unrestored things or you already finished one.
Sincerely yours.
