I think this is a natural result of Ren growing up with multiple genres of music and a love for cinema, this is hip hop bravado combined with uk and american gangster movies
Hey Andrea - I think you should react to the lead singer of Greta Van Fleet - They are a popular rock band that came out in the last 6-7 years. Josh's vocals are very unique and his technique is interesting. I recommend a couple of their ballads, but you could do some of their more rock songs too. Their ballads include Heat Above and Light My Love. You can also do some of their live performances to as Josh is a great live singer. Again, he is unique and not the typical like RnB/Pop crooner, he is high register rock crooner.

Ren is playing a character who also appears in another video, "Animal Flow" in which the guy he kidnapped appears tied up in a house full of animal characters. The obvious video to watch after this is his acoustic version of this filmed in LA.
The acoustic version of this is fire. I think, as a performer, you might appreciate it more than this version. Same with the Genesis acoustic version.

EDIT: Wow, thank you again. Don't know how I missed that one. Ren is the gift that just keeps on giving! Does anyone else know of any rap artist out there who can reinterpret their own songs in the way that Ren does, with just acoustic guitar and his voice? I feel like all of this is completely unprecedented.

Definitely Ren expressing the character. The victim here ends up on display in the video Animal Flow. He was flexing his rap skills. I really love the acoustic version. Somehow makes it have a whole different vibe. I do love this also though. Love watching him having fun.

Lyrics can portray a character- they don’t have to be taken seriously or autobiographical always….
One thing I've learned about Ren is don't bring in any preconceived notions to any song he does, even based on what he's done before. He's got so many sides, and there's no way to put him in a box.
Great reaction Andrea. I think you may be reading too much into the story; Ren is singing the perspective of the character and not himself. I am hoping there is a followup video to further the storyline of the character. What I feel people struggled with in this song is exactly what you thought. Is this Ren or is this a story performed by Ren? I think it is the latter.

Enjoyed your reaction. As you said, he's the king of one takes! I think he had a lot of acting fun with this. Acoustic version of this is stunning, like hearing a completely different song. Other songs I'd suggest, any Big Push busking or not, brilliant. I'm a huge fan of Money Game 1 and 2 (video version), 3 drops soon so worth doing now. The Chinchilla How to be Me duet is gorgeous.
Sometimes things are done just because it's fun.
I dig the way you never know what to expect from Ren:). He is excellent at taking things like 90's rap, gangsta rap, even Beastie Boys style 80's rap and reconstituting it. "The Hunger" is another short (2 minutes) rap song that is a flex on how he can flow, spit, and just get nuts on all forms of rap. Probably ought to check that one out at some point.

Ren said that the abduction comes right before the scenes in the Animal Flow music video. For a storyline chronology standpoint, you should check that one out next. Like many others have said, also check out Murderer Live Acoustic
The one connection I heard of, is that Ren mentioned that a song literally titled Murderer and has blunt serious song context is more acceptable to media/industry, compared to his previous song sue is side, which was censored and at least partially blocked. I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop vid by the Big Push shows off another side of Ren, live busking, guitar playing and singing.

Andrea your reaction is very intelligent and different. My take is that he is attacking his other side and its very English, I am from a working class background similar to Ren and men here are expected to be macho and stiff upper lip, he is lampooning that and being very intelligent at the same time. Its very subversive of British culture!

Thanks for your reaction :) I think hip hop and rap is inherently competitive. it's about self-assertion and putting others down (rappers) The same in brakedancing, etc. So the fancier rhymes, metaphors and schemes the better. It was better to assert oneself through art than violence. So the metaphorical verbal violence is actually peace-affirming :) Ren likes to flex when he raps, like all other rappers, because it's fun :)
exactly. He loves it. It is art and it is challenging. the one thing that most annoys me when singers can't find the art in hip hop/rapping.

Ren does a livestream on twich after each premiere and he mentioned that the guy being bundled into the back of the car is the same guy who is tied up in the begining of Animal Flow which connects those 2 stories. Just Ren being Ren with his storytelling

It’s actually pretty interesting Ren it’s live streams that this is actually his old apartment back in London.
That's the pendulum effect. On one side he is super sensitive and vulnerable (Hi Ren, Sick Boi, Suicide). Murderer is his other side to balance it out. Making music is his therapy
Ren is in the middle of rolling out his Sick Boi album. It's something he made in 2021 and 2022 before he even wrote Hi Ren. He made this because he was frustrated with his previous management deal, and just wanted to have fun making music. Although he has a few deeper rap songs (Sick Boi, Power and Genesis), most of it is just fun and him flexing his skills. Other songs like the Illest Of Our Time and Losing It have a similar POV.
In this song in particular lines like:
"I hit like Stallone, Rocky keep it cocky" (He's the champ)
I'll be Al Capone (he's the boss)
"I walk alone" (no one can match him)
"Sitting on the authors throne" (greatest writer)
"If you want it I'll deny it like a mortgage loan" (you can try to top him, but you can't)
There are lots more, but I'm sure you get the idea. There's no deeper meaning IMO. He's just having fun.

This song is hip-hop. So Ren is "fronting." Meaning, he is puffing up his chest and showing the other artists that they shouldn't mess with him.
OH, Andrea, Andrea, Andrea, Ren is just playing a character. He's playing on the gangster rap troupe and just flexing his rapping skills, so you're just reading WAY too much into this. Ren is a very deep artist but he also just has some fun songs and can get very playful & submerge himself in a character that's nothing like himself. Ren has so many layers in his music, he can make you cry, think, cringe, or laugh and it's all in the name of art and every time you press play on a new track you'll never know what you're going to get which is very refreshing. 🤯❤
Let me give you some choices & what to expect when choosing a song.
If you're looking to cry or get in your feelings:
Ren - "For Joe" (a song dedicated to the memory of his best friend who took his own life 13yrs ago) heart felt lyrical poetry,
Ren - "Freckled Angels" (The original song he wrote & dedicated to Joe 13yrs ago & sang at his funeral/memorial.)
Ren - "Penitence ft. Molly Mckinna" (Piano ballad Ren wrote combined with beautiful vocals by Molly mixed with rap & spoken word)
Commentary on Social Issues that makes you think:
Ren - "Dominoes" (Commentary on social media, consumerism and body image and it's affect on today's youth)
Ren = "Money Game part 1 & 2" (2 songs commenting on greed, wealth & a broken governmental system/crooked politicians)
If you want musicianship look no further then Ren and his band The Big Push:

The Big Push - It's Alright (Both of these songs Ren wrote but most of the catalog for TBP is collaboratively written)
If you want pure, in your face rap songs, that are not just flex songs but also gives insight into Ren life and struggles:
Ren - "The Hunger" (very much a flex song but also gives you insight on how Ren grew in the rap genre)
Ren - "Illest of Our Time" (Is seen by many as just a flex song but don't be fooled It say's a lot about Ren's health struggles)
I could go on and on & I'm sure everyone will have a favorite song of their own, but I just wanted to give you a couple of examples for choices you can dive into. I didn't even get into his genre bending and blending, like my favorites "Ready For You" which blends Jazz and Rap, or "Humble ft. Feat. Eden Nash" where Ren blends Ska and Rap. Both of these songs deal directly with Ren living with a debilitating disease for years & is inspirational listening to them both.

Keep in mind the previous work you referenced that UA-cam was attempting to restrict and censor. But here is a song about a Murderer. So violence against one’s self is bad but against others is ok?
It is a character but it is also showing Ren flexing his bars and music.
Sometimes Ren sings about himself. Sometimes he tells stories and plays characters. Even if he uses his own name (like in What went wrong 1 and 2). Here he's playing a character that belongs in a larger story, how much we'll see of that story is unclear. But he's not singing about himself. except maybe the part about rocking stages.

This is another story song about the senseless violence that happens everyday everywhere & what goes unnoticed. “eenie meenie minie mo, I line them up against the wall, … I mean actually squeeze the trigger & pull it” there is real murder happening in the world all the time. This is highlighting it
He’s “riding the beat” which adds to the urgency. Yes this is intentional & gives you a similar anxiety to the senseless violence discussed in the lyrics. The man attacked at the end is another example.
Also remember this is rap so you were describing 99.9% of rappers

From Ren's own mouth, this and a lot of his recent songs are just him having fun making a hip-hop album and the lyrics of the songs are just him lyrically flexing in hip-hop fashion; not to be read into too deeply or meant as a metaphor for his life or anything. All of these hip-hop songs were made before he made Hi-Ren so after his hip-hop album he wants to do more stuff like that.

Other songs to react to...very difficult to name one in particular as there is about a decade worths of back catalogue. My own considerations would be Do You Believe, Penitence, Diazepam, Dear God as a few. To be honest though, no matter the genre or song, you could choose any song to react to

My opinion is this part of a hiphop album and this song references the history of hiphop culture of bragging about sex and violence through technical flows, word play and double entendre's and Ren flipped it too direct meaning of murder is mental illness.
The video is direct flip too, someone going about thier normal day decides to kill someone random whilst taking you along for the ride as a witness. Apparently in this hiphop album Murderer is precursor to Animal Flow so its like murder leads to tyranny...
