Brooke, you are so right. I have always had a food storage, my family used to tease me, however when a friend was going through a hard time, it was easy to put together boxes of freezer and shelf stable food to help her family out until they could get on their feet again. When 2020 hit, there was no scrambling as we had well stocked shelves to help our family in their homes. It never hurts to have a little extra, we consistently help 3 other homes, and we are fortunate that we are able to.

I never for the care pkg from my bestie when I was sick and a giant box of groceries from a neighbor who was moving out! I was moving into my first apartment on a very limited income from my 9-5 job, no room for big emergencies, and I will always cherish that someone cared and thought of me. 🫶🏻🎁🥫🥗🍝🥗🌮🥘🥙🍗🧀🥖🧈🍅🫑🌽💛

This is such an important video! Having a stocked pantry and emergency fund made all the difference, when my husband's work was slow for a few months. We cut our grocery budget and reduces our non essentials. Other times we had gone through that without an emergency fund and stocked pantry, we were completely stressed, behind on bills and it was hard on our marriage.
If you have a variable income, it is essential to pay down debt, start saving for an emergency fund, and stock up your pantry. It's horrible when you get caught unprepared.
Thanks Brook for teaching on this topic, so people don't have to learn the hard way like we did. You're amazing!❤

If I can suggest one thing: Make sure you stock up on COMPLETE meals. Having 20 cans of beans is good but if all you eat is beans and corn and peas you will start to lose weight and feel bad after a week. I have, for example, a can of 8 tamales, can of refried beans and can of corn for myself and 2 kids. That's adequate protein, carbs, veggies and enough calories for one good meal a day. The rest can be cereal bars, can of fruit or anything else. Just make sure you have one very good balanced meal a day or you are going to get weak and sick if it goes on a while.

My family has always made fun of me that I have like a years worth of shampoo, toilet paper and stuff like that. I was happy to have it in 2020.
I can eat probably 3 months on stuff in my house. I think it's a thing our great grand parents taught us. They had a whole room dedicated to food. Both my big momma and big daddy said they went hunger in the 1920s and 30s they would never do that again. They canned everything out of the large garden. They ate deer and squirrel we killed. They raised hogs and cows. I miss them alot.

One thing that was a turning point for me was learning food preservation skills as a form of food storage. For example, this week, fresh blackberries were on sale in my area, so I bought a bunch and made jam. Got 6 pints for $5.00, and now I don't have to buy store bought jam! I also dehydrate the veggies before they get too old in the fridge. Package them in a canning jar or zip bag to preserve longer, and it didn't cost me anything over my regular budget.

Yes this is essential. We had a tornado Memorial Day weekend end. Lost the deep freezer and fridge contents. Once power was restored after 10 days I was able to restock the fridges condiments and pickled items from my pantry. We went through a lot of shelf stable items like canned fruit tuna etc during the outage. So now we are slowly building that pantry back up.

Last week I got 2 packs of mashed potatoes ($1.99 each) and two cans of vegetables ($1.25 each) and a can of pears ($2.97). I focus on shelf stable foods on sale for this challenge. I started mine anew when I moved last June. I used my then pantry to eat on as I looked for a new wheelchair accessible apt & pack up. It made life easier for me since I didnt have to worry about grocery shopping in the 60 days I had (needed to be out by May 31). So mine came in the clutch for my unexpected move (non-renewal of lease), and helped me out immensely. YES do this. You never know when you'll need it.

@@stephaniepapaleo9001- You're Welcome, I really hope it helps you like it did me. For those 60 days I used up things in my freezer & cupboard, and it was enough to get me by until I learned my new grocery stores. It made it easier to not have to pack up & move with me, but it also made sure everything was rotated & used up when I did get here.
As for my new surroundings, well honestly they aren't ideal but at least I can maneuver my wheelchair around. I'm still looking for an apt that's within my SSI budget & wheelchair accessible, but now I have a year to look for it & have a roof over my head in the mean time. Good Luck on this new chapter as well & thanks for asking as well. 😃

Don’t forget that you need potable water during an emergency! Even if your tap works, the water might be contaminated (flooding etc.) Storing extra water in your car, workplace, and home is a wise idea. Federal guidelines recommend storing three days’ worth for each individual. Also remember that you can find water in your water heater and toilet tank. Thanks, Brooke, for keeping us on top,of things! Water purifying tablets or other systems aren’t a bad idea either. You may have to be on the go in an emergency. 💧💧💧💧💧💧💦

I stock up at least $10-$20 extra each week as in Florida, you always prepare for hurricanes & the aftermath. Keeping up with current world events, it would be wise to stock up a little extra of all your basics ( food, medicine, toiletries etc) in case things go sideways for awhile. Almost everyone can stock up with $5 if they get basic foods like rice & seasoning, canned goods can be stored under beds & in closet if creative enough.

Gossner milk will last un opened on the shelf long after sell by date if stored in a cool dry dark place. Hope that helps. Nido Fordificado powdered milk is good. It is either 8n the powdered milk section or in the baby or Hispanic section at most stores. Nido powdered milk is what a lot of Latinos use for their babies but works for.everyone too. I always get pantry goods on sale. I like being able to share with family and friends if they need it.Some people say I am a hoarder but I'm not. I don't drive, so I like having a variety of things so I don't have to have the same old thing all the time or worry about grocery shopping much. I eat more meat now than I used to (and also losing weight and trying to lose more) but I have used tuna, canned chicken or soup instead of hamburger or regular chicken in the Hamburger/Tuna/Chicken Helpers.

I always try to have my extra pantry items like canned products, pasta, rice, beans, spices, sugar, salt, flour, oil, etc. Same for cleaning supplies and toiletteries. My dad used to do this too. He bought in bullk. I do it in a smaller scale, but I have things to eat and use at hand.

I have built a small stock pile. I try to buy 3 items for my stockpile when I go grocery shopping. Things will add up quick in your pantry. I also go to a local church free food pantry once a month. The extra can goods, rice, beans and other goods I recieve also help stretch our small budget.

Use your stock up pantry money to buy at the lowest price possible. Eventually most everything you buy will be at the lowest price. This week Ham steaks are $0.99lb in one lb packages. Flat, easy to freeze and one ham steak feeds 4 since 4oz is the recommended amount per serving for protein. Last week chicken thighs were $0.99lb so I stocked up on them to last 2 months until the $0.59lb sale comes around.
My goal is $1lb for dinner for meat, carb $1 a dinner and veggies $1.50lb making a dinner for 4 people about $3.50.

Yes!! I bought one last year and love it! I live by myself and buy the large packs of meat, when on sale, and break them down to smaller packs. Half pound packs of stew meat and ground beef (except for meatloaf) because you don't need alot of meat to make things taste good! 😉

Phoenix AZ- Safeway & Albertson have a bunch of different items on sale for $.50 each. Limit 20 I went to both stores so I got 40. I got Bushs beans, diced tomatoes, DelMonte veggies, Starkist tuna, 1lb boxes of pastas, Rice & pasta roni. I spent my $20 for the month of June and got alot. Felt good to walk out of the grocery store with so many bags for $20!!

Just saying…that “freezer friendly” may not be a good choice for an Emergency food storage haul. As just last month, I did without 16 hours of electricity and had to discard most of my freezer foods. Canned goods are the best choice here, shelf stable pastas, crackers, water, etc. but no frozen foods in my opinion. Barbara

I hit up a good sale at rouses yesterday. About $145 worth of meat sale 88¢/ lb and cans 3 for a dollar and sausage for 1.88 and whatever else was on sale. It may have been a little over budget for this month but I know I got a good deal and it will probably mean the next month or 2 I don't buy much which is great bc I have to replace my car windshield. I am not great at the $5 system. I want to get there but I have been looking at sales more and trying to get what I will use from sales.

Just fyi... if you have the pleasure of having a Latin store near you, typically the bags of beans are HUGE and affordable since latinos cook with beans a lot. Lots of beans!! And Goya sells a big 3lb bag of rice for not a bad cost either. Canilla rice is great. And our store sells powder aquafrescas. I think the brand is Klass. It is so yummy. Better than Kool aid. I would stock up on that too! Cause here where I live when hurricanes strike we could lose water and this would be great with those big gallon jugs. You could fill gallons of water with aguafrescas
