Yas ive been waiting on this one!! Been wanting to do my own video of Jem but I know yours will be the best, especially on the “love triangle “ between Rio, Jerico, and Jem.
There is a reboot in the form of a comic series which I HIGHLY recommend. The comics are very very VERY magical girl (at least compared to the og show). And it’s got a really interesting plot beyond then music industry stuff. It still keeps the message of “be yourself,” “be kind,” and “be a friend” from the original but it’s def more tailored to today.
I watched Jem for the first time when I was in elementary school, and The Hub Network (now known as Discovery Family) was screening it ( from 2011 to 2015 I believe), and I immediately fell in love with the aesthetic!!! They just happened to be playing the very first episode too lol. Christy Marx has said herself that she was heavily inspired by superhero comics, which I'm sure you can note with Jerrica's alter ego Jem and all, the constant near-death experiences at the hands of supervillains, and the fight between good and evil represented by The Holograms and The Misfits, respectively. Except, the show has more of a soap opera flair to it to appeal to both girls and boys. I revisited the show a little after I finished my first year of university, and was surprised by how hilarious it all is. Many of the show's traits have aged poorly, but the premise itself is begging for a respectful reboot that picks up where this one left off. It really is a shame that it will probably never get that...oh well.
Jem and the Holograms is very nostalgic for me from my teen years! Thanks so much for traveling back in time to review it, even though it's not a true magical girls show 💖 Love, love, love your channel so much
I love how they tried (and managed) to check off all tropes at once: Jerrica is a pop star, a business woman AND a (foster) mother. She uses technology, but it works like magic. The Holograms make pop music and the Misfits do rock. I think I even heard that the producers tried to make the show appeal to boys as well, because apparently in the 80s boys frequently had the power over the remote (whole other can of worms, but for another day), so they didn't want to risk girls not watching the show, because their brothers found it boring. (Might be worth looking into for the wrap up video) Not sure if the attempt to appeal to the broadest possible demographic helped or hindered the show in the long run, but it certainly made for a unique experience.
Jem was a show that my mom watched as a child as well. I saw this show on the Hub Network back in highschool. After I was done being shocked that a white woman was named Jerrica I got into the story I fell in love 😩 Adopted multiracial sisters that moonlight as international popstars while running a foster home for girls with the help of her late father's money is still something that is so wholesome.
Like many people who weren't born during Jem & The Holorgram's original run, I caught Jem while it was rerunning on The Hub Network in the early to mid 2010s. I'd say what first drew me to the show (Aside from the music.) was the fact that it was a western cartoon for children (particularly young girls) with an adult female protagonist. Something you don't really see much in children's animation even to this very day.
I will never forget Jerrica wanting to tell Rio about her and Jem by saying she has a secret she needs to share with him but he takes that time to yell at Kimber about having a date with two guys on the same day and that’s how they found out about each other (which yeah, a fault on her but she’s not dating either of them, she just going in a date with them) but he says this hurt them because she’s a liar. Then Jerrica decides not to tell him the secret after he just screamed at her single sister going on dates with different guys and he throws a chair across the fucking garden in anger that she won’t tell him a secret. Then again, the only point for Rio I will give is that when Jem kissed him for the first time he immediately told Jerrica that he couldn’t work with Jem again and apologised for that but she basically begged him to keep working with Jem, he still should have admitted it but even as a Jem fan girl I admit the love triangle between two people is so stupid and genuinely grating. The longer Jerrica takes to tell him the worse it’ll be, Riot in season 3 makes a good point to Rio but I’ll hold off that until you get there. Also season 2 has my favourite episode of the whole series because it affects two characters relationships past that one episode, they’re more cordial together after it and I appreciate it~ My fave characters I also Stormer, I just love her
Yeah, and as Rio storming off, he also pushes over a garden plant for some reason. Just an actual toddler throwing a fit lol. And OMG really? stormer and Kimber would make such a cute couple! Finally a ship in the show I could get all the way behind.
@@bubblingmoon Even the show tries to play him off like he’s the best boyfriend material, at least we’ll always have him punching Eric lmao Oh damn I forgot that you’d see my original comment and not the edited one, sorry for ruining that but yeah, Stormer x Kimber is the most popular ship of the fandom for a reason :)
I think Jerrica was scared of telling Rio because she didn't expect him to fall for Jem as well. Like she said in episode 4, "how can I tell him the truth without feeling like I've made a fool of him?" Yes, she should have let him in on the secret from the get-go, but I guess a lot of the show's drama would be lost if she did. 😅
I also think Jerrica is hyper aware of Rio's hatred for deceit and maybe she felt like putting it off. Only that made everything way worse. I honestly never considered the possibility that Jerrica didn't think Rio would fall for Jem, but it does make sense. Perhaps she was more concerned with going up against Eric and The Misfits, that everything else was a secondary issue in of itself?
I havent seen the show but Im guessing Rio "hating deception" is supposed to justify Jerica keeping the Jem secret from him but idk, youd think he'd understand considering shes doing it to help a bunch of orphan girls. or maybe wouldnt, maybe he just sucks ike that
I think it is an interesting notion that Rio has issues with people lying to him or deceiving him, especially since he cheats on Jerrica with Jem without issue. Since cheating is a form of dishonesty, it makes him a hypocrite. (I would have loved to have seen what would have happened if she were to tell him off with it whenever he tried to bring up his issues with lying.) While I understand the logic of Jerrica being afraid to tell him because she thought he would become angry and leave her, it makes Jerrica look bad because she seems to tolerate cheating with no issue. I think she should have been honest with him from the start. (If he leaves her, maybe they weren't meant to be together.) Incidentally, I am surprised that he never figured it out. I would have thought he would have tried to run his fingers through those luscious 80's locks of hers and discovered that they were nothing but an illusion. 🙂

I totally get what you’re saying but Lyrical Nanoha uses magic with technology. It’s purely my opinion and I’m not saying anyone has to agree with me, but there is absolutely no in universe magic in Jem. So it just doesn’t meet my bar for a true magical girl show.
there was a pretty good comic book series a few years ago - Rio is actually a good character in the comics Techrat was supposed to be non-binary in the cartoon, but the crew was forced to make him a cis guy - a LOT of the people working on the show were Queer in a time when that as a career killed, and they wanted to be more inclusive
That’s interesting to know, I’ll be doing more research on the production of the show once I start my wrapup video, but I’m trying to experience it just as its own entity my first time watching it.
I'll add a bit of a spoiler for season 3. Riot from the Stingers is one of my favourite characters. I grew up in the 1980s, and I loved this series. I also feel like it is something that is meant to stay in the 1980s. I believe there were always roadblocks in the reboots due to issues with the licences regarding the songs. They made 101 original songs just for the Jem and The Holograms band.

The reason the show gave for Jerrica not telling Rio is she waited too long (cause she was busy with the house fire and murder attempts) and she knows he'll be mad about her lying for so long (which is hella messed up when you think about it).
