    To be clear, I expected the Ultra Towers to sound good, I just wasn't sure they would truly justify the price difference, from my point of view. SVS is well known for high performance audio, without painful pricing. I just wasn't sure it would ultimately pass my personal "I would buy it" test.
    I didn't think the sound would improve so much that I would want to double my speaker budget. Yet, I find myself delighted and surprised with the difference.
    My wife has been exploring older genres, revisiting old tunes, and introducing me to music I haven't heard before. Gordon Lightfoot, Lou Reed, Chicago, and Toto truly came alive in ways I didn't expect.
    She absolutely loves the Ultra Towers, which is another high mark. They live up to her personal value standards as well, which I think says a lot.
    Songs that might otherwise be dismissed implore you to listen again, as though it's the first time. When speakers encourage a whole new exploration of a previously dismissed genre, you know they are special.
    They truly provide a fuller, high resolving musical picture. I should have given the Ultra Towers a shot long ago. They were designed to compete with speakers many times more expensive, and I believe they hit their mark.
    An insight to their design practices: sub101.link/Pr...
    The Prime Towers and Ultra Bookshelf speakers offer a LOT of value, and I enjoy them immensely. They are more economical, and within reach for more people than the Ultra Towers.
    That said, if you can make the Ultra Towers happen, the value is absolutely there in my opinion.
    The audio industry is known for diminished returns, meaning doubling your budget does not typically mean doubling your enjoyment. This is NOT one of those cases, even though I expected it to be. They meet my personal standards for value with ease.
    These are truly speakers to aspire to.
    SVS has been very supportive of this channel, and it is very much appreciated, but it doesn't guarantee positive reviews. They understand that, but sometimes I don't make that clear to my audience.
    I expected to do a review that was less glowing. Those expectations were obliterated. They are absolutely worth every penny.
    I would have preferred the Black Oak over the Piano Gloss, but that's because the dogs create a lot of dust.
    Of course, these excel in movies too. I never bought into the idea of needing Music and Cinema specific speakers. A good speaker should do well with both. If a speaker does well with one and not another, to me that indicates a deficiency.

    I’m considering upgrading from the prime pinnacles for the ultra towers since I moved and now have a larger front room to accommodate the ultras ..... do you think they are a noticeable upgrade or would be worth trading up for ? Thank you

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  3 роки тому +1

      I definitely prefer the Ultra Towers over the Pinnacles. I think they're definitely worth the price difference.
      The MTM set up (Midrange Tweeter Midrange, two mid ranges with the Tweeter in the middle) just seems like the way to go to me.
      The Ultra Towers are definitely the best sounding SVS speakers.
      Even though I cross them over at 90 HZ, and set as "Small", the opposed 8-in drivers really had quite a bit to the bass presentation. Nice full sound.
      Just keep in mind that with the Ultra Towers, you will most likely get a phase error, because you have speakers pointed in different directions. It's totally okay. Just ignore the phase error.
      Otherwise, I don't have a complaint in the world about them. And to be clear, the phase error is not a complaint.

    I know wants you recommend the pb 4000 or pb 16 ultra with the ultra towers, but what about the soon to be released pb 3000 or pb 12 plus line of subwoofers. I don’t think my wife will let me get dual 4000.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому +3

      With the Ultra Towers, I would say dual PB-2000's or better. The PB-12 Plus or it's super top secret replacement should be a great fit.
      I say the PB-2000's at a minimum because I would want to have the full audible range of bass. They would sound great with dual PB-1000's too, but I think the PB-2000's at a minimum would be a better fit.
      The 12 Plus, PB-4000, and PB16 Ultras are all great choices too, so long as they fit your budget and space. The 1 year trade up is always an option too, if you feel the need.

    I own a pair of ultra towers. I’ve got to say after long periods, I do get ear fatigue. I believe it’s because of the metal Twitter. Bass might be missing a little more tightness for music.
    For home theater I have no complains. They are phenomenal. That been said you can’t get anything better for this price point. I’ve compared them to higher end speakers and decided to go with them for the price.
    You Must hit them with a lot of power. They turn into a completely different speakers.
    I have a Marantz sr6009 with a Parasound HCA-1206 bi-amping them with 135 each Chanel(270 of raw power per speaker).
    Will love to pair them with some SVS subs. That might help me with my music experience.

      I would try another power amp, i found parasound gear to be to analytical and combines with svs tweeter as you say could sound bright and harsh which is causing your ear fatigue, i have mine running off a primare a32 and a yamaha rxa 2070 for pre and its a great warmish sound and the svs do love being driven hard and i cannot get enough of aerosmith/ motley crue at reference levels and beyond but i think the neighbours may have something tk say, i am soon going to get the marantz av7705 and i bet its going to sound better again.

    So i know this is a bit off topic but i wanted to ask something and couldn't find another way. I'm planning to buy the svs prime 5.1.2 package that's being offered, seemed like a pretty good deal. What I'm not sure about is what receiver to get. I'm thinking about spending around 500-600 dollars, I've been considering onkyo tx- nr676 it seems to give allot for the money. But ive also noticed that audessey multi EQ XT seems much preferred to accuEQ. I've looked at some Denon in that price range and they're similar except for the dac, the onkyo offer 32bit 384k while the denons ive seen only go to 24bit 192k. I'm kinda wondering if you can hear the difference. And if there's anything you could recommend :)

    • @midevil1980
      @midevil1980 6 років тому

      I have the Onkyo RZ-810 and love it, and you can find them online right now for like $500, when they were originally over $1000! I'd definitely recommend it for the price. 😊

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому

      I'm not sure where you're located, but maybe you can find an AVR with Audyssey XT32. Typically that would mean the Denon x3000 series or higher, but the difference in room correction is worthwhile. Here's one on Amazon with a decent price, but it doesn't have every latest bell and whistle: amzn.to/2xhKqGG

    • @MattiasSjosten
      @MattiasSjosten 6 років тому

      Subwoofer 101, thank you. Yes that one seems to be pretty good. I'm in sweden by the way, so other side of the world hehe. It's a bit pricey here at the moment, but I'm not in a hurry. Have you used the x3300W personally or you just know that it's a decent one?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому

      I've used the X2000, Marantz SR7011, 7012, and the X6200. The most notable difference, aside from obvious differences, is the improvement from XT32. It's something I would look for. Marantz is another option too.
      You might also look into refurbished if something like that makes sense. Older units are a good option too, but I would stay with X3300 or better.

    • @MattiasSjosten
      @MattiasSjosten 6 років тому

      Ah, alright then. Thanks for all the great answers. By the way, I've noticed that you always say that dual subs is so much better than singles. Well with the svs prime package, i get one sub only, but I'm thinking i could just get one more later on when i have money for it. Ofcourse i could also start with let's say the prime towers the center and 2 pb 1000s. But i would rather get the package because of the lower price. Does the extra sub really make that big of a difference in a smaller room?

      If you can fit them, Ultra Towers all the way. As you have discovered with the PB-4000's, small rooms are challenging, but it doesn't stop you from enjoying the benefits of better bass and bigger equipment. If you don't have the floor space, the Pinnacle Towers would be a good option too. The Ultra Bookshelf speakers are very good, but you get a little better mid-range and bass from those towers.

    Real good honest review!!! I have been debating for some time between getting the SVS Ultra Center, and Ultra Towers, or the BIC America Acoustech Platinum-28II Center Speaker, and BIC America Acoustech Platinum-980 3-Way Floor Speakers. I have not found any worthy reviews good or bad for BIC America speakers, other than that they have been around since 1973, and was the rave in the 70's. The reviews I could find the customer was more than satisfied. Enough so, that I am convinced they are a decent speaker that can get the job done. I have found nothing but great reviews on the SVS Ultra line of speakers. Almost all worthy reviews for SVS Ultra say they can hold their own against speakers 2x-5x their performance price. Due to money constraints I am going for the BIC America Acoustech Platinum series. If I find them unsatisfying, due to performance limitations, or due to failures from a lack of quality control. I will ditch them in a heart beat, and go for the best bang for the buck that I am convinced right now which is the SVS Ultra Towers and SVS Ultra Center Speaker. What caught my interest to watching your review, was to hopefully get the customers point of view. I was already acquainted with these speakers technically. So, again TY! for this review it was invaluable to me.....even almost 3yrs after you reviewed this item...BRAVO!

    If people have these speakers and love them, that’s all that matters. As long as u are happy with ur system no one can tell u any differently.
    Having said that, I would like to know wut ur opinion is on high efficiency speakers such as the PSA speakers. I just bought them, and I cannot fathom why anyone should not get them if movies/games r the primary source of content they play in their home theater.
    IMO there is no need for anything else. No external amps are needed. SVS speakers are lower sensitivity. IMO not needing an external amp to really get the full picture of speakers is huge for someone like me.
    Just curious on ur thoughts on this? I love SVS subwoofers but PSA speakers should be on anyone’s list who is looking for a fantastic movie/gaming experience

    I still think been a channel called "subwoofer 101" should review other brands. I know you're the first affiliate which is cool and all. I went from the PB-1000 to PB-2000 (fantastic) to GoldenEar Triton 3+'s with inbuilt subs and I get better sound from the Triton 3+'s (just not as low). Think going to duals was a good idea. Time to buy another GoldenEar sub or maybe a SB-4000.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому

      I've reviewed HSU and Outlaw. Not as much as I would like, but I have. You get more composed bass from your Golden Ear's, though not as deep, because they are essentially duals. Grab another PB-2000 and everything should tighten up.

    What do you think of the Def Tech XTR60 don't have much room and my TV is kind of high?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 років тому

      I haven't heard those particular speakers, but a slim design will likely "sound" a little thin.
      With a 70 hertz response for the XTR60, the Ultra Bookshelf would have a deeper sound at 45 hertz. Having a substantial cabinet makes a difference.
      I'm just not a big fan of wall mounted (in or flat on) speakers, so far.
      Acoustically, it's generally better to have speakers away from the wall, even if just a little. Not saying all are bad, I just haven't been excited by the "wall speaker" sound yet.
      That said, if that's the only thing that will work, it will get the job done. I'm not against Definitive Technology. Speakers are a personal choice. I would just try to stick to a traditional box speaker in general, if I could. But that's just my opinion.

    I've never heard any SVS's - BUT - I may be old school so I don't understand how you can say a bookshelf can hold it's own to a floor standing (whether they are Ultra or prime) with out a sub. If you have a sub in the mix - that is not a comparison of just the speakers.
    BUT I love your honesty in all your videos and will continue to watch.

    Hello everyone, I really need your help and experience about the Svs Ultra towers in a small space.
    I want to replace my Svs Ultra Bs with the Ultra towers, but Svs warns, like other reviewers, that the bass can be to loud in small spaces (even with the Ports plugged. what is your experience?

      This is tough, I haven't heard the Ultras in a small room. You could do the Prime Pinnacle if you are concerned. Not being able to return it is tough. Is your seating close to your walls? That makes a big difference, you get boundary gain. If you are using an AVR with good room correction, it should tame spikes.

    I have the SVS PB 12 Plus sub and the older SCS-01 bookshelf speakers (5.1 setup). Would replacing the front bookshelf speakers with the ultra towers be a good idea? Just thinking in terms of the SCS-01's being an older model and speaker matching. Thanks!

      I have DefTech towers that have subs inside them. I also have two big HSU subs. Just recently my amp in one of the DefTech towers died, 6 months after my warranty was up. So now I don’t use either of the subs in my towers and I’m missing the enjoyment. Two subs and good bass in towers definitely make a difference in sound quality and enjoyment. I definitely don’t think subs alone are good enough and also I don’t believe towers with good bass in them alone are sufficient. Definitely want to go with both. If I was going to get speakers again I wouldn’t buy anything made by DefTech again, they are great speakers that sound amazing, but 3 year warranty on an expensive product that has history with failing amps just isn’t good. I would definitely spend my money on SVS ultra towers.

    The $99.99 "8" dayton sub 800 is a much better sub than the $99.99-120.00 Polk PSW-10 "10 sub" which has a lot of port noise and is boomy... due to the fac they have a cross shaped thingie in the port...

      Haven't spent a lot of time with Klipsch to give a fair opinion. Speakers are more of a personal choice. Klipsch has so many variations that I couldn't begin to tell you what's what. I heard some of their $500 towers at Best Buy, but it wouldn't be fair to judge them based on that.
      I know the SVS Ultra Towers are outstanding, and are definitely worth trying out. SVS is really good about returns too if you aren't as impressed as I am.

    I would love to hear your honest opinion on a comparison between the SVS SB-4000's and JL Audio F-113 or the E-112 subs. I know you have an issue with sealed subs, but I'm just curious to hear your opinion.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому

      The biggest thing that comes to mind is cost. The JL's are high quality, no doubt there, and I wish they made ported subs. Easier to go dual with the SB-4000's or even the SB-16's, but beyond that I couldn't offer a real comparative view.
      What I would want to know is which had a deeper presentation. SVS tends to have a very deep sound, even among other deep ported sub makers. I wouldn't be shocked if that carried over in the sealed realm, but that's purely speculation. For me, the depth of presentation determines if I like a sub, or if I truly love a sub, everything else being equal.
      Without firsthand experience, I couldn't tell you which way to go, the JL's may justify the higher asking price. So long as you run duals, I imagine either would make you grin ear to ear. I just couldn't say from experience which would be better.

    • @xWeaponx101
      @xWeaponx101 6 років тому

      @Subwoofer 101
      I appreciate the reply! I'm leaning more towards the JL E-112 subs. Although I really like the SVS SB-4000's, the size of the sub is where the issue comes into play with the future wife!
      The cost is not that big of a problem. The JL's have a smaller footprint than the SB-4000's, but the output is not that far apart...dual sub set up (which was shocking to me)! I've heard them both and though to me the JL's are much tighter with music, the SVS do have a bit deeper presentation with movies. It's not great leaps and bounds difference, but there is a difference.
      Anyway, I wanted to get your input, so thanks for the reply.

    These are my dream go to speakers when I go and replace my cambridge soundworks t-500 towers, one of which has a failed subwoofer amp, not sure what else the trade up will offer me, just want a matching set, have you had any experience with the t-500's? they are pretty old, any comparisons would be helpful to know if it's marginal or a big upgrade.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому +2

      No experience with the T-500, and with speakers it's always a subjective, personal thing. I think they are worth a listen, and in home auditions are the best way to go.
      I would say if you try them, let them break in for a couple weeks. All SVS speakers come on a touch strong at first, but sweeten up nicely.

    I heard the SVS Ultra Towers a while back when I was going for a demo of my current speakers. I was genuinely impressed with them as to how good they did sound. They were hooked up to some serious Naim hi-fi equipment so this would probably have been a best case scenario for them. They actually look a bit better in real life than I expected too. Certainly much nicer to me when compared to the Prime series (which is understandable - them being a much more budget proposition).
    Like you mention, what you prefer sound-wise can & should drastically affect the type of speaker you like. For me, having listened to Dali speakers for the past 10+ years I just really like their sound at this point. That's not to say others are bad - they just tend not to be the sound I like or possibly am used to.
    However I do recommend people try the SVS speaker range now. Especially those who are looking at their first speaker package. They are fairly common in the UK now although we do get a little stung on import costs so they are a little pricier than some of the competition. I imagine in the US they are even better value.
    On a slightly different tack I have just put in an order for a pair of new subwoofers. Looking forward to hopefully receiving them in the next month or so.

      I've heard the term "European Speakers vs American Speakers", and I suppose SVS would lean European, which I would consider complimentary. Not to say there aren't exceptions both ways, but it made sense.

      Hard to say which at the time, but Denon or Marantz.
      XT32 room correction is the main thing I look for.
      Otherwise, whatever suits my needs for the number of channels I want to run, E-ARC, and be compatible with Dolby vision.
      XT32 is a pretty good qualifier, meaning they don't offer it on their lower end AVRs.
      If it has XT32, chances are it's a really good AVR.
      You can see my Top 16 AVR settings, to see how I dial it in.
      Not affiliated with Denon or Marantz directly, I just like their AVR products.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 років тому

      They are unpowered, passive speakers. I suppose you could call the 8" drivers subwoofers, but they are part of the entire speaker, and not independently adjustable like a typical subwoofer.
      Some towers have built in, powered subwoofers that are independently adjustable. Often those are called "power towers".
      The Ultras are not power towers, they are passive, non adjustable towers.

      A. It's true.
      B. I didn't just sign up, I spent years getting the program up and going, negotiating terms, etc. It's something I'm very proud of.
      C. It's disclosure of a financial relationship, required by law, and the decent thing to do regardless. I'm not trying to mislead anyone.
      D. I have Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS), which activates the "Fight or Flight" response, which makes hearing more acute than when not in "Fight or Flight". This "might" be the cause of my sensitivity. I know I'm not the only with the sensitivity to sealed subs. I'm definitely NOT happy about it, but I think it helps some people make informed decisions.
      E. You're right, due to Post Concussion Syndrome, I can't produce the amount and quality of videos that my viewers deserve. I do what I can, but that's not enough to really take off on UA-cam. I'm grateful for the modest, yet awesome following. It's humbling.
      F. My triumphs are small and infrequent. I started one small video at a time, and built something bigger than I anticipated. I'm quite happy with how far I've gotten. I'll never have the biggest channel in audio, and I'm absolutely ok with that.
      I can't make everyone happy by being who I am, but I have no plans to be anyone else.
      I know how to get uncommon, impressive bass, which goes beyond just picking the right brand. My Bass Hack playlist is an example of that.
      No one person is credible to every other person, so I expect to lose a few.
      Take care.
