Some might even be exporting certain models back to Europe. Its not just tariffs, but when they are selling a huge number of vehicles its cheaper/more economical to build and sell them here rather than ship over on a boat.
German cars sell well in US because American cars are shit. So basically the choice for anyone who thinks a bit is to buy either Japanese brand or German brand. Not so much choice in US to begin with.

@sweden_is_xxxx their products in the USA depreciate quickly. Consumers don't relish them like they used to. Sure, people love the GTIs but the mainstream SUVS and cars don't have the best reliability. Fahvernugen in the US is dead.
The cascade effect has begun two years ago and is playing out as we end 2024. 2025 is not going to be a pleasant market for anyone globally for cars that we all love to pay high prices for…
Those EU countries that voted "yes" to the EV car tariffs either produced no cars or produced far fewer cars. This convinced everyone that she(Ursula) is to deindustrialize Germany. Not helping workers.
The problem for Ford, GM and Stellantis is that they have retreated to the pick-up truck market in the US, having vacated the sedan market. Trump levying tariffs on imported EV sedans is not about to improve the big three’s prospects.
Audi just reported they're shutting down/mothballing their EV plant in Brussels due to lack of sales. Meantime in the U.K. second hand diesel cars have reportedly increased in value by 10% over the past year according to the newspapers. EV sales in the U.S.A. are stagnant whilst hybrid's are going like gangbusters - they can't make enough of them, particularly Toyota hybrids.
You have to put some blame on the unions and government too. You can’t create competitive cars when your autoworkers are paid substantially more than your competitors.

@@GiantsOnTheHorizon That's not entirely true. Labor costs are not entirely what drives the cost of the product. It's how efficiently it is manufactured and how much the company intends to sell it for. VW will be supplied low carbon steel by Thyssenkrupp Steel. Now as far as Thyssenkrupp, they too think to be efficient they must lay off a few thousands too. I wonder how much that is about new technology...
Mercedes, BMW, and VW each have one assembly plant in the US. I have not looked at the content labels on a US built Merc or BMW, but would suspect that many of the internal components, engine, transmission, and such, are imported. In VW's case, the engines are imported from Mexico. Stellantis only imports a handful of Alfas, Masers, and Fiat 500es. Ford imports nothing from Europe. Based on what happened when Trump was last in office, and imposed a protectionist tariff on Korean built laundry washers, US made cars will see their prices increased to match the tariff inflated prices of imports, so there will be no net loss of competitiveness for imports, unless Trump also imposes a limit on the number of cars imported, before the tariff is stepped up to a wholly impossible level. Trump's washing machine tariff had two steps: 20% and 50%. Once the 50% level was reached, Korean washers were no longer available. The other variable is the incoming Trump administration is openly, proudly, anti-EV.. My theory is Musk has lost interest in Tesla, beyond using Tesla owners as beta testers for his AI systems.
The us needs ev imports. If they put tariffs on eu cars there is even less ev push in the us. Its about growing the ev segment, otherwise it won't ever happen. We either need cheap fast public dc charging or chinese evs with reasonable tariffs to drive ev transition in the us, whichever is faster would be better
we don't need ev imports. Hybrids will be our transition. Our grid can't handle putting up fast public chargers, and our government shouldn't be using public monies to install them. EVs have about a 30% penetration in the USA market at best.
The EV Revolution is delayed by ten years in the US if not longer. One study said 72% of actual EV buyers would buy ICE or another technology next time. That is not product satisfaction!
@@capnkirk5528 The US is not going to fall behind just because they don't adopt EVs like Europe. The tariffs are history repeating. The USA already has tariffs on that protect trucks and AWD's. It has made the manufacturers dependent on less competition and is an inefficient way to make a profit. It's also the opposite of what E. Musk is talking about, which is efficiently in all areas of activity. Tariffs will drive greater inefficiency and increase costs in the USA. E. Musk is correct in saying the USA must be more efficient at what they do, and tariffs will do the opposite. Competition in the market will drive greater efficiencies. A tariff plan to get less efficient will in the long term harm the USA. It is the opposite of the efficiency policies E. Musk is advancing and the opposite of competition in the market.

The only alternative would've been to buy more expensive energy from elsewhere and have the country deindustrialise much earlier. I really don't see any reason in that argument.
German cars exported to the U.S. cost about 20%-40% less over there and are often better equipped. U.S. cars imported to the EU are subject to about 11% custum duties including papers and documentation plus an average of 20% or more local VAT for the final consumer (the same VAT that applies to any european car). I think you are missing something with the Chinese market. 1st - Evergrande is Chinese, you forgot to mention this. 2nd - Chinese automotive manufacturers are over producing cars, many sitting on fields for years, including EVs.I think this is part to keep people working, and also for nationalism, China has to maintain the image of being a manufacturing powerhouse. 3rd - A lot of global factories are moving their facilities to other asian countries because Chinese labour cost is rising. A lot of Iphones aren't made in China anymore. This will lead to a weakening on the power to purchase for the average chinese. Personally, I think all markets are fucked.

German car companies make cars in the USA, usually the models that have the best American sales. VW, BMW, and (I believe) Mercedes all have plants here.
Puebla Mexico is where the VW Tiguan and Taos are made. Sure, Tennessee makes the lower volume Atlas and ID4. All but the ID4 are traditional ICE vehicles with VW's TSI engines.

@sweden_is_xxxx their products in the USA depreciate quickly. Consumers don't relish them like they used to. Sure, people love the GTIs but the mainstream SUVS and cars don't have the best reliability. Fahvernugen in the US is dead.

The cascade effect has begun two years ago and is playing out as we end 2024. 2025 is not going to be a pleasant market for anyone globally for cars that we all love to pay high prices for…
The Great depression was caused by Tariffs. A third of the world's fleet was tied up.
You sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind 🌪
Those EU countries that voted "yes" to the EV car tariffs either produced no cars or produced far fewer cars.
This convinced everyone that she(Ursula) is to deindustrialize Germany.
Not helping workers.
The problem for Ford, GM and Stellantis is that they have retreated to the pick-up truck market in the US, having vacated the sedan market. Trump levying tariffs on imported EV sedans is not about to improve the big three’s prospects.
I don't know why I enjoy those stories so much when Europe is going down the sink 😅
Excuses...VW has failed and is going bankrupt...any excuse other than lack of good management and product will do.
You have to put some blame on the unions and government too. You can’t create competitive cars when your autoworkers are paid substantially more than your competitors.
@@GiantsOnTheHorizon Don't forget that American automakers aren't much better. They can only make high priced SUVs and trucks here in the US. All their subcompact SUVs are either made in Mexico (Ford) or Korea (GM) and "shipped" in.
@@philweiland5391 Without a doubt.
VW will be nationalized.

Well, yes, of course but that would be rational. U.S. doesn't do rational anymore. 😉
we don't need ev imports.
Maybe. In which case the US will fall ANOTHER decade behind much of the world. Too bad, so sad, couldn't happen to a nicer country. /s
@@capnkirk5528 The US is not going to fall behind just because they don't adopt EVs like Europe. Semi-serious thought: EU leaders should stop wearing smug smiles pretending like EU is the best thing in the world. That will make EU more relatable.
Europe had cheap Russian energy for decades. Now it's gone and Europe will have to compete with others in the same situation. Not so fun then.
If you're European like me...prepare to become poorer for the rest of your lives. It's downhill from now on.
They can choose to compete, or not. It’s not the job of the United States to provide them with welfare.
I believe it's Wright's law
Considering Sam seems to regularly project and confuse Chinese EV dominance in China with the rest of the world car market (especially in video titles) I'm not surprised he does that between Moore's Law and Wright's laws
Well, European companies own 90% of US truckmakers...
How do you think that will end...
The VW's were expensive to start with but the tariffs, it will make them even more unaffordable. Oh well, there goes the Fahrvergnügen.
Keep in mind that North America gets many of their VWs from Mexico under NAFTA. It's been like this for a long time. We can only wish we had German-built cars imported from Germany. Reliability has gone down over the years.
Eventually, China will supply the entire world... A few rich folks are buying a specialty made T-shirt going for $150. The majority is happy with a Chinese made T-shirt selling for $9.99.

German cars exported to the U.S. cost about 20%-40% less over there and are often better equipped. U.S. cars imported to the EU are subject to about 11% custum duties including papers and documentation plus an average of 20% or more local VAT for the final consumer (the same VAT that applies to any european car). Export is exempt from VAT. From an american or international point of view it´s easy to interprete this as "at least 31% tax on our cars" which in the end happens to be true, call it what You want or comparing apples and beans. It is much cheaper to buy and run a car outside the EU. For EVs until now there were some reductions. The Tesla Model 1 S P100D from 2016 to 2021 cost EUR 145.420,- about USD 150.000,- a brand new one today in Dec. 2024 is listed at EUR 119.870,-

Half the price, counting subsidies, yes.
europe charges 10% tariff for usa cars. but usa only charges 2.5% tariff for euro cars. the imbalance is a leftover from the marshall plan. trump only wants to equalize the tariffs, which is fair. preferably euro reduces tarriffs to match usa. if that doesn’t work then trump will match euro tariffs of 10%. lets hope euros make the right decision.
