  • 2020 was a year full of uncertainties. While the devastating 2019/20 fires that tore down the east coast placed a spotlight on Australia’s failure to address climate change, focus quickly shifted to the coronavirus pandemic that was rapidly spreading around the world.
    As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc and dominate news cycles, it’s crucial we take stock of the current state of climate change. What climate impacts have we witnessed in the past year and who has been most impacted? Are we on track to meet our climate targets? What can we do to respond more effectively?
    Bringing together policymakers, industry, researchers and the wider community, the QLD Climate Update 2021 will present a locally-focused snapshot of the latest climate research. Hear from climate experts and those working on the climate change impacts on the coasts and oceans, and the legal mechanisms for protection of coastal properties and ecosystems.
    This event is co-presented by the University of Queensland Faculty of Science, and the Australian National University Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions.
    Program:
    - Global Climate Overview 2020 - Prof Mark Howden, Director, ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions
    - Climate impacts: Coasts and Oceans - Prof Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, ARC Centre for Excellence in Coral Reef Studies; School of Biological Sciences, University of Queensland
    - Legal mechanisms for protection of coastal human settlements and ecosystems - Assoc. Prof Justine Bell-James, School of Law, University of Queensland
    - Queensland government climate adaptation and mitigation - what has been done so far, and where to from here? - Georgine Roodenrys, Executive Director, Climate Change and Sustainable Futures at Queensland Department of Environment and Science
    Moderator: Dr Rebecca Pearse, Lecturer, ANU School of Sociology / Fenner School of Environment & Society

    I don't quite understand the acceptance of the 1.5 C elevation with CO2 net zero goal. Current temperature increase is 0.8C. At this temperature increase, the permafrost is already melting and the Arctic sea ice is already loosing significant mass and trending down further (as are glaciers). So if we just maintain 0.8 C, these (and other) processes will continue and progress, with the wild fires, heat domes, record droughts and record floods that we are now seeing. At 1.5 C, nearly twice the temp rise we currently have, these catastrophes will only be worse.

    2 cents;
    We all need to change the way we live, and always strive to do the right thing.
    If profit entered into the solution would it be possible to reduce CO2?
    Right now a big part of population is willing to spend a “few” dollars, or they can’t change their lives due to financial reasons, i hope we figure it out.
    Unfortunately I think people are more post-active than proactive.

    I live in Queensland Childers to be exact and we have been suffering in drought. Dams are dry and bores are either dry or too salty to use. Some farmers are getting out of growing sugar cane as they can’t get enough water to grow it. I have been witnessing this for years but still a majority of people still don’t believe in climate change. What do you think will have to happen to make politicians and the Australian people believe we have a problem? I think the scientists need to get a public platform of some sort and get the information out to the public and somehow bypass the mainstream media to get the message out. I really believe that the people won’t wake up until the last tree has been chopped down and the crops can’t be grown and by that time it will be too late. Sorry for the pessimism but my message is can you find a way to get the information out to the public?

      Take heart, most people believe outside of QLD. Unfortunately you are currently a deciding vote so we are all held to ransom by unknowing selfish gullible people. Changing your neighbours vote could change the situation. Good luck 🍀
