Definitely helps, I've used toothpicks but these are better. It can be easy to 'knick' the casing too much when using a knife and it'll open right up on you.

This looks handy I do make a decent batch of sausage each fall. For those of the right age group to appreciate this: I'm the leader of a local comedy and sketch group here in Kansas City Area - After reading watching this video I'm thinking up an exercise involving the old Tony Orlando song 'knock three times on the ceiling'. This time it'll be 'prick three times on the wienie'. Could be fun.
