kelly is soooo fluid on this wave, the first top turn was beautifull..
his cutbacks are so clean
I remember when Pottz was champ, he and his manager worked out a formula for a successful wave....looking at this particular wave of Kelly's, he does 6 or 7 different cutbacks to add colour to the ride. Some surfers mechanically replicate each top or bottom turn and it looks boring and gets judged as such. But Kelly's does each cutback differently... Some sharp, some drawn out, some with more rotation, others with a 2 stage curve.
It's all in the subtleties that's create the difference.

I've been surfing 10 years... and I'm still happy just to be stood up :) it's about the understanding the wave not what you can or can't do, It all comes in time. You'll find yourself turning/trimming naturally when you understand/read the wave

Kelly surfs a lot like Tom Curren did in the 80s, except Tom didn't do aireals. The first guy I ever saw do air was Davey Smith out of Santa Barbara in about 1982... Look him up; a legend who doesn't get his due in surfing history...he was also known as "The Bug."
I saw Curren surf in 1983 in perfect overhead lefts in OB San Diego at the Hang Ten contest,.. and I've never seen footage of him surfing as well as in that contest,.. but there's no footage of that contest,.. but I was there watching the final between him and Joey Buran. Joey was hacking, Curren was poetry in motion, going back side, doing double pump of the lips(bottom turn to mid face turn to vert lip bash,.. and repeat), it was amazing, haven't seen that style since,… so it seems.

@hippokryptic i think when he jumped over the top of the wave his board shot through the bottom, at the right angle, and just ended up under him. he was probably surprised too. still wish i could do that everytime.

lolol everyone is hating on kelly. I agree its kind of annoying him always being the best. But there is no denying it. That is when it comes to contest surfing. but even then there are guys that can do gnarly shit than him free surfing but guaranteed kelly gets more done in those sessions. He has the consistency and the flare. Definitely the best surfer but obviously thats just an opinion
