Does Heathers even need defending? It’s a total cult classic. Super self-aware and biting while revelling in its cheesy, 80s aesthetic. You also cannot tell me the costume design does not slap. Veronic’s fit at the gas station when she meets JD? The Heathers’ color-coordinated outfits? Iconic.

I guess because it is so dark, doesn’t make its points super obvious, and has humor that some could offended by, that it could need some defending. But it is probably more of a classic and more influential than its ever been.

I honestly never saw this movie as homophobic.. the two guys get murdered by JD because they are violent homophobic bullies and they are further punished by being painted as gay lovers in their death, I see the depiction of homophobia typical of that time but the final message that I got is not anti-gay (I'm giving this perspective as a bi woman)
Also this movie gave us the iconic quote "I love my dead gay son" and just this did so much for the queer community

The story behind Winona Ryder's involvement in Heathers is really interesting. Her agent told her she's never work again for starring in a film like this, and she initially got rejected from the role cause she wasn't "pretty enough". Also I remember in an interview, she mentioned that she knew a bullied goth girl who ended her life and it made her really upset that the people bullying her were only nice to her after her death and that this was why the movie meant so much to her.

Highly influential cult classic. I genuinely think it’s one of the handful of best movies from the 80s. And it still comes off hilarious, dark, subversive, odd, entertaining, relevant and just very much its own thing. I also don’t really see it as “homophobic”. The handful of gay jokes are about making fun of gay panic and toxic masculinity. Finally, who the hell compared Heathers to Dear Evan Hansen? Even if they meant the musical version of Heathers (which is arguably more dumb-downed and basic than this movie), it’s still quite a stretch.

This movie really is a classic, it has influenced so many movies and shows that followed in so many ways. The musical is fine, but Kennie, I’m much more interested to have you watch the tv show. It was a “reboot” that came out a couple of years ago on Paramount, 10 episodes to they pulled the final episode from airing in America. The tv show is very much panned, definitely another case of writers not understanding gen z kids and getting dialogue and material from Twitter threads, but I do think there are some interesting things about it that had potential. Specifically the finale, which was actually the original ending of the movie before they changed it. 9 of the episodes are on Amazon if you’re interested! It would definitely get a guilty verdict but I’d enjoy hearing how you judge it.

I actually do see this movie’s school shooter archetype is done really well compared to today. Like The Joker, which I enjoyed although not my favorite, it completely takes seriously this tortured misunderstood and disrespected man becoming an agent of chaos and it looks desirable. That’s certainly not the goal of the filmmakers but it is very easy for people to ignore that and watching people dance down the stairs was fun for like a day. I think the fact that Heathers centers Veronica a person who hypothetically wants to see all the bad people taken down wishing for Heather’s death and then we follow her reckoning with the results of that strategy. While J.D. escalates she pulls us back. Veronica doesn’t give in to fatalism or delusions of grandeur, instead she realizes terrorizing a handful of people in nowhere Sherwood, Ohio isn’t going to fix anything in society. It’s dangerous and stupid to believe otherwise. Her ending lighting a cigarette in J.D.’s ashes and finding a new prom date shows the clear contrast where you know Veronica’s gonna have a relatively happy life after this while J.D. has nothing. He’s immediately forgotten. Idk if it’s true that school shooters want fame but they certainly don’t see the value in others. She has nothing against Martha, but nothing for her either at the beginning. Apathy, but in the end she cares a lot. Society is an abstract but the people around you are real. Not a solution to mental health problems but suicide is not the only option and being reminded of that can be life saving.

Legend of Billie Jean (teen rebellion FTCC), Gleaming the Cube (skater FTCC), Heathers (he beat out Brad Pitt for this role and started Slater’s Jack Nicholson emoting which would permeate his acting career), Pump Up the Volume (anarchist proto-hacker tropes echoed in movies like Hackers -- another iconic FTCC). Then in the 90s he starred in a string of blockbusters, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Interview with a Vampire, and Woo's Broken Arrow which elevated him to the A-List for most of the decade. Slater stayed working in the 90s: Bed of Roses, Kuffs, Tarantino’s True Romance, Untamed Heart but I'm not going to IMDb the rest.
BTW - A little nostalgia hit: Slater voiced Pips in FernGully alongside Robin Williams pre-Disney.

I was born a few years before this film came out so I was about 4 when it dropped. It was a formative part of my childhood. My mom was a very young adult in the time it arrived so I watched it with her and i've been gobbling up dark comedy ever since.
I always noticed the similarities between more contemporary work and Heathers. Jawbreaker, Ginger Snap, Jennifer's Body, Mean Girls...hell even Clueless. It's a foundtional film and it always makes me chuckle.

I watched Heathers with an exchange student during hookup. Except he was a Vietnamese exchange student so he was so confused about how American highschools work a bit and he was more amusing than the movie (on purpose he was funny as hell). Needless to say we were kinda checked out the first thirty minutes in.

Oh wow. This came out when I was 14, so I was exactly in the 'too young to watch it but we know you are going to watch it' target demographic. We LOVED this movie in 1989. But that was pre 9/11, pre school violent mass events, pre so many, many things. It WAS in the middle of a teen unaliving themselves 'epidemic' in the country, and it was right when 90s darkness was starting to overtake 80s brightness. So... it definitely hits differently now. It's a weird flashback to watch it and remember the totally different context we watched it in.

I feel like the main thing to differentiate between harmful and not harmful representations of serious subjects is whether they show it for what it is, or they try to glamorize and romanticise it and make it appealing. I haven't seen the movie, but I've seen the musical, and from what I've heard everything's pretty similar, just the added songs and execution are different. And I can at least say from your words and the musical, that Heather's not only shows how fucked up these actions are despite having jokes, but that also romantising fucked up acts is fucked up. It kinda gets a little bit meta and I like it. For example, in the boiler room where JD is giving his monolouge about why he's bombing the school, in the musical, Veronica tries to convince him not to go through with it even though the school students are admittedly trash and Veronica has suffered the same if not more bullying than JD from them, and when she realizes she can't convince him, she physically tries to stop him. She doesn't side with JD and in essence, the audience and the writers don't side with JD on this. It's fucked up regardless. And no amount of villain monolouge is gonna change that. For any one that likes Romeo and Juliet out there, I'm sorry, but I can't stand it. You can see it as a great play, and I won't rag on you too much cause it is seen as a classic, but I personally find it a drag with unlikable characters except Paris oddly enough and Juliets caretaker, and I hate the ending and all the stupid concidences and plot conveniences it took to get there. One of my main gripes with the ending is all the romanticising about them killing themselves. That even though their families are saddened by their losses they can hold on to the hope that are together forever in the afterlife, and I hate it. Killing yourself is never the answer and should not be portrayed as the ultimate answer to your problems. Of course, it was written in a way different time and medical help was nonexistent, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. That and the stupid love triangle always irks me cause I just see Romeo as a whiny brat and they don't really show Paris as a bad potential partner, Juliets just not interested. I greatly prefer later adaptation like Warm Bodies, or funnily enough, Lion King 2, where instead, they find a compromise between the 2 warring sides and are able to coexist and work together and the two main characters don't end up dying for stupid reasons.

Now we listen to the musical together (which is amazing btw). This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's dark and unhinged but also campy and in a way quite fun. Despite how tongue and cheek it is, it's moral still holds weight and is still relevant today.

The musical changes Veronica too much in my opinion. In the movie she she purposely joins the Heathers and isn’t really a nice person, which Heather Chandler calls out at the beginning when Veronica acts like she’s too good to play cruel pranks. While the play makes her out to be more like Cady from Mean Girls being swept up in the crazy world of popularity.

As a non-American gen-z'er, the topics discussed in the film never really resonated with me (I'm not a huge consumer of 80's teen movies either) but I still enjoyed the dark humor aspect. Not to mention, Winona Ryder and Christian Slater's (and all the Heathers) performances and outfits were really good. Gotta rewatch it sometime!

This was my absolute favorite movie when I watched it in high school. I was obsessed with the costuming and camera work (and honestly I still am. They were basically trying to do low-budget Kubrick and the result is fascinating) but you’re right that the movie gets harder to watch every year. It was unfortunately prophetic to some extent and I’ve seen that turn a lot of people off the film the last few years.
And as regards to homophobia, I’m seeing some people in the comments say that the film wasn’t homophobic and was instead a critique of homophobic culture. And while I agree with that, the way it went about saying homophobia was bad was by making homophobic jokes. Like, they’re said by the antagonists (Kurt, Ram, sometimes JD) and framed in the same way that Duke’s comments about Martha are framed, but they’re still just homophobic jokes that characters almost never disagree with. Though I still think the back and forth of “I love my dead gay son” and “I wonder what he would have thought about a limp wrist with a pulse” was the most succinct tear down of homophobic-but-acts-supportive-when-convenient-for-them parents that I watched all throughout high school. Love that line.
(I am now restraining myself from talking about how poorly the musical adapted that scene and also every other scene because the musical was such garbage I wish I could tear it apart with my teeth and smash every single instrument oh g-d I cannot believe they missed the mark that bad)
